HONOR SOCIETY Becoming a member of the National Honor Society is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon a student because membership is restricted to such a small percentage of the student body and because competition is so keen for those few openings. This honor is not something that a student can win because of one outstanding performance in one specific area. It is one that is granted because of outstanding performance over a period of three to four years. Students are graded by the entire faculty in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership, and active participation. Only by maintaining a consistently high level of character can a student be named to this select group. Honor Society members have served their school, their community, their parents, and themselves in a valuable way. This positive influence will undoubtedly con- tinue as each member faces the challenges of the future. Mr. Seidel — Advisor Mr. Dean — Principal 31 THESPIANS Troupe 282 of the International Thespians (Drama) Society was organized nearly thirty five years ago at our high school. Since that time, there have been over 450 high school students recog- nized for their outstanding work on the stage. One student, John Bergstrom, (1957 Initiate) has since gone on to distinguish himself on the Broadway stage. Officers for 1981-82: ROB JOHNSON — PRESIDENT KAREN HEDGES — VICE PRES. Mr. Samaras has taught for twenty years, the last seven of them being spent at H-EL. He graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Education Degree. He received his Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. Mr. Samaras enjoyed his students, and it clearly showed. He was always cheerful and ready to help. He will be missed by all of us. He says that he will have more time now to spend with his wife Carolyn, his four children, (David, Paul, Mark, and Nancy) and his five grandchildren. The staff of the Picayune would like to wish Mr. Samaras the best of luck. Mr. Samaras AND MICHAEL BOYER WINS AWARDS Mike Boyer a senior trumpet player was selected to play in the Illinois Music Educators Association All State Band this year. To receive this honor, he was required to participate in two other bands. First he was selected by the school to compete in the district band. The state is divided into several districts and students from all over the state are chosen to form several bands. From there he was selected to participate in the all district band. This band is comprised of the best players from the district bands. Mike was then selected to audition for the state band. The event lasted for three days and was held in Springfield. The students practice each day with a guest conductor and presented a concert the last day. Lori Daln Plays Plano Solo. Jon Buck receives John Philip Sousa Award. The Cornjerkers used a fullcourt press, man-to-man defense, and the fastbreak to offset other teams. The team earned another Wauseca Conference Championship and had a late season victory string of 11 consecutive games. The season began slowly as the team had to ad- just to a new coach and a new style of play. After winning a second place trophy in the Classic, and a third place trophy at Rossville, the team settled down to playing consistent basketball through good teamwork and hard work. The highlight of the season was a triple overtime victory over Schlarman. Awards for 1981-82 include: 1. Mickey Sullivan — Captain 2. Mickey Sullivan and Greg Matta — Co. MVP. 3. ESLIC 185 WE (NUITE YOU TO BROWSE THRU SOME OF OUR OUT- TAKES” (we’ll try not to distract you with our nonsense captions) 186 We have come here as seniors in high school. We will leave as adult members of a society that requires more than has even been expected of us before. “During the past several years we have been offered many pieces of information, many bits of advice from those who were charged with educating us. Being typical students we usually resisted as much of it as we could. But after tonight, the system changes. Regardless of whether we have chosen to enter a college, join the military, or get a job, after tonight, we get what we deserve. Do not leave here tonight carrying only your diplomas. Take with you a sense of responsibility and a sense of compassion. If you leave here tonight knowing how to depend on yourself, if you leave knowing that the love you show to others will always be returned, then you leave prepared. “If you have spent the last several years depending on others to make decisions for you or if you have spent the last several years looking for someone else to blame for your own mistakes, then you do not have much to look forward to. If, on the other hand, you have spent the last several years building a set of skills for making wise decisions or if you have spent the last several years learning how to benefit from your mistakes and learning how to work with others, then you can face the future with confidence. Seniors — I challenge you. Never be satisfied. Never think that you have done all that you can do. Never settle for just getting by. You owe it to those who have helped you along the way, and you owe it to yourselves to always be watching for the chance to improve, for the chance to grow, and for the chance to make who you are and what you have a little better. This is my challenge to you. Thank you and good luck.” Misti McBride Valedictorian I would like to welcome all of you who have come to share in the excitement of the graduation of the Class of 1982. “This graduation ceremony is symbolic of much hard work and of many ac- complishments. A number of people have helped us through our years of educa- tion by sharing their knowledge and by adding their insights. Those who have worked hard and who have accomplished much are our teachers, our parents, and ourselves. “Our teachers have worked hard to prepare us for the future. They have taught us skills that we have been using along the way and skills that we will use in college or at work. Our parents have given us standards to live by and have helped us set worthwhile goals. They have guided us through the hard times, and they have shared the joys of the good times. Our parents have provided us with the moral support that we have all needed so many times. I am sure that they will continue to give support, just as I am sure that we will continue to need that support. And, of course, we have always had each other. We have had fun together and have felt the satisfaction of participating together in various activities. We have enjoyed winning. We have endured losing. We have needed each other, and we have helped each other while working hard in the endless effort to better ourselves. “After tonight’s ceremony we will all naturally be leaving many of the people who have helped us come this far. We will not, however, be leaving without taking with us the knowledge of how helpful our teachers and parents and friends have been. The influence of these people will be with us in all we do. Thank you. Phil Pajor Salutatorian 188 Lori and Kevin Dain We couldn’t have finished without them. THANKS!
