Dedication GLENN D. BRASEL 1890-1979 We, the staff of the 1980 Picayune, dedicate our yearbook to the late Coach Glenn Brasel. Mr. Brasel was bom on a farm near Salem, Illinois on March 18, 1890. After com- pleting his grade school education, he was certified as a teacher. He taught at a couple of one room schools in Southern Illinois, while taking college hours at Carbondale. When WWI commenced, he signed up with the US Army and spent two years in France. Upon returning home, he completed his education at Southern Illinois Teach- er’s College (now SIU) and graduated in 1920 with a degree in industrial arts. “Braz” taught at Casey for two years before coming to Hoopeston in 1922 as the industrial arts teacher and coach. Coach Brasel soon became known as “Hoopeston’s winningest coach.” His record spoke for itself. His basketball team- captured eight regional titles and one sectional giving him a win record of 87%. The story in football was similar. His overall career record was 162 wins, 36 losses, and 11 ties. This outstanding feat earned him a place in the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Mr. Brasel was also instrumental in giving our school its nickname. As the story goes, people were always accusing his players of jerking corn for summer athletic training, so the athletes started calling themselves “Comjerkers” and the name stuck. Even after he retired from teaching in 1951, “Braz” kept active in civic and school affairs. He served as city alderman for five terms, served as the truant officer, and engaged in his hobby of antique cars. There was rarely a high school sporting event that was not attended by him — including those this last fall. Mr. Brasel died on Dec. 27, 1979 and was buried at Mann’s Chapel cemetery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene. Two daughters and a son survived him. We will always cherish his memory, not just because the football field is named for him, but for the great contribution he made both to the school and to the Hoopeston community. Attention: Since the country is involved in the 20th decen- nial census this year, the 1980 Picayune staff researched information for HEL. We hope you enjoy read- ing our 1980 census statis- tics. And life will get you far. But one must always remember. Never to wish upon a falling star. I say what I feel and my feelings are true. Everything 1 say and fed. I say and feel for you. Whatever the future may hold in store. I could ask for nothing more ... Than to spend it with you. Suzie Putnam We sit and reflect on scattered memories of the past. We're all looking for something new and exciting, but scared for the future. We are protected and stable now, but soon we’ll gain our freedom. Life is moving much quicker and everyone tries to fill each moment to the fullest. We have all dreamed about the night when we walk down the aisle, but now... we turn and wonder why? Everything we’ve ever known is soon to change. Everyone will take their own path to success. All the people we’ve known and loved will turn and walk away. Our memories of those years will never disappear, but shall remind us in our future years, how much we’ve learned. Amy Huffman What would things be like if I just happened to die today? Would 1 be missed, would anyone notice that I was gone? Would I have been a person to change history. or just a person known in my community? Would anyone take care of my grave, w hen my body is cold in the ground? If I were to die today. I would have one sole request. That just one person would remember me. For the friend I was or tried to be. Tambra Oberlander Wh don't we get along? A long time ago you said you loved me. And I replied the same. What happened? I still los e you but must go my own way. I need to find out what’s best for me. Who knows? Maybe in time we’ll return to each other. With new outlooks and things will work. All I ask is that you remember me. It’s not hard at all Just try. Keep thoughts of me Deep within you. And never let them die. Joyce Young Oh. my friends, how I cherish them all each so special and so kind. Always there when 1 need them. even if only in heart and mind. I needing them, and they needing me, always I hope, this will forever be. Joyce Young They went to school with usrC Through every little fuss. He was quiet and she was shy. But. why did they have to die? | Oh. how 1 wish they were here. To go through our graduating year. The tour was organized and led by Ms. Odle and coordi- nated by Travelworld of Salt Lake City. The week of fun-filled activities com- menced when the students boarded their non-stop United 747 flight at Chicago O’Hare. Seven and one half hours later, they landed at Honolulu International amidst alohas and lei greetings. The group then checked into the Imperial Hotel. Activities of the week included a scenic tour of Honolulu with stops at the Punch- bowl National Cemetery, the Dole pineapple cannery, the Arizona Memorial, and a gar- ment factory. Several students visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hanauma Bay, and the pineapple-sugar cane fields. The two outer islands of Kauai and Hawaii were also on the itinerary. Major attractions on the “Big Island” included Volcano National Park and the city of Hilo. On the island of Kauai, the group visited the Fern Grotto and ate at the Coco Palms Hotel. Besides absorbing alot of sun. swimming, and jogging along Waikiki Beach, the Hoo- pestonites found time to shop and taste native cuisine. The tour ended too soon for the “howies.” Flight 2 to Chicago found everyone tired and loaded down with macadamia nuts, pineapples, and other trinkets. Nevertheless, all were happy to have visited the 50th state. The Polynesian Cultural Center show. Tom Morns and Gilbert Warner enjoy their dinner at Tavana’s. The 1979 Homecoming has come and gone, but our remembrances of the tingling excite- ment we felt during that week still linger on ... It started with the makings of the floats during the week. On Wednesday the bonfire was crack- ing and roaring along with the band playing songs to enhance the spirit of everything. The girls gave the traditional garters this year but, there was one difference — no kisses. The Fri- day parade was led by the marching band fol- lowed by floats, cars, and queens. The senior float received first place with the theme Spin the Toppers. the Sophomore float received second, and the Juniors received third. The Art Club won for the best decorated car. Schlarman proved to be the aggressor during the big game that evening. The Cornjerkers were defeated by a score of 13-12. After the game everyone went to the civic center and had a grand old time ...
