1979 PICAYUNE Hoopeston-East Lynn H.S. 615 E. Orange Hoopeston, Illinois 60942 Vol. 73 Dedication C. RICHARD HOBBS 1921-1979 We, the staff of the 1979 Picayune, dedicate our yearbook to the late Coach Hobbs. Mr. Richard Dick Hobbs was born November 12, 1921 in Chariton, Iowa. He was the son of Charles and Leatha Jacobs Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa with a B.A. degree, from Northwest Missouri College with a M.A. and from Kirksville State Teacher's College with a B.S. and M S. After serving with the US Marines in WWII, Mr. Hobbs held teaching positions at high schools in Bel- mond, Securney, and Bloomfield, Iowa for 15 years. He came to Hoopeston in 1963 where he taught woodworking classes and coached football. Mr. Hobbs served as head track coach from 1965-78. Dur- ing that time his track teams won 10 county titles, 3 Wauseca Conference titles, and placed second in the State in 1975. His hobby was carving wooden caricatures of small-town life and Western scenes. He won many awards for his exceptional talent in woodworking on both the state and national levels. Mr. Hobbs was a member of the National Woodcarving Association and the Danville Elks Clubs. Coach Hobbs spent his last day (January 15,1979) at school teaching. After returning home that eve- ning, he was stricken with a heart attack while working on his car. Mr. Hobbs is survived by his wife, Elea- nor, his daughter Debbie, and three stepchildren. Mr. Hobbs was a very well-liked teacher, a successful coach and a friendly man, indeed. He dedicated his life to the teaching of young people, and in return, we dedicate this book to him. 2 Administration..........................17 Faculty.................................23 Seniors.................................29 Juniors.................................53 Sophomores..............................61 Organizations...........................67 Athletics .. R Bugera Class of 79 Destroying One Another We look around, we count the days Remember in many different ways. Like loves we leave behind or lives we hope to find. The friends who meant so much may never keep in touch. The world seems far and wide but we look around with pride. WE ARE SENIORS, finally, at last. A year we spend in search of the past. We look around, we count the days. We leave this school in many ways. Memories that are yours and mine. To you. . . the Class of 79. Dave Dukes The Show Must Go On You can be depressed and smile that way they never know You're dying on the inside, from the feelings you won't show. You can laugh and still be crying, cause it covers up the tears. You can act so calm and casual, In the face of all your fears. Dave Dukes But when the act is over, and all your friends are gone. You'll find that what you're fearing most. Is the show that must go on. IK I really wish we could be friends It's not right we act this way, Only if our brokenness we would mend We'd be able to say, friends. But no, it’s more complicated We wouldn’t want to bother The way our relationships has implicated We are not meant for each other. The hatred flows between our eyes Of course, we never speak But I’d like to spy inside your mind And seek the deadly information. Before we were together I was just fine without you But the question is wheather we can be so cruelly selfish. Not giving to one another the friendship we could share. May Wanderer The golden rays of a new day. The sun peaking over the horizon I watched for what seemed hours. And walked when it was over. I felt it watch me, as I made my way, Down an old dirt trail. It hung over my head, As I stopped to eat my lunch. I shaded my eyes as it passed me, And zoomed towards it's destiny. Like a slow jet plane. On a never ending journey. The golden rays of a low sunset. The sun disappearing beyond the horizon. I watched for what seemed hours, and slept when it was over. 170 Dave Dukes ADVERTISERS Family Restaurant Complete Line of Quality Food and Beverages Dixie Highway Ph. 283-5782 Hoopeston, IL BROWN'S WOODWORKS Hardware — Paint — Glass Lumber — Custom Built Cabinets BALDWIN'S STANDARD 0S) Tuneups, Brakework, Exhaust, Wheel Balancing, Complete ; STAN OARD Service for Your Car Corner 9 and 1 Ph. 283-7739 801 E.
