PICAYUNE Hoopeston-East Lynn H.S. 615 East Orange Hoopeston, Illinois 60942 1978 —Vol.72 Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; BUS 0 4 i 1 «•CM SPIRIT!!! vi« ilioiu 1 Miird MOW And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh I took the one less traveled by. The trip was organ- ized by Ms. Odle in coordination with IES. The group had a IV.2 hour non-stop flight from Chicago to Honolulu. After arriving and being greeted with the traditional lei, they were taken to the NapuAlani Hotel, located two blocks from Waik- iki Beach. Highlights of the trip included a trip to the Big Island” to view the Volcano Nat. Park, the Black Sand Beach, Rainbow Falls, and Liliuokalani Park. On the Island of Oahu, they visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Kodak Hula Show, the Punch- bowl Nat. Cemetery, and Pearl Harbor. All were able to purchase Hawaiian souvenirs of clothing and monkey-pod goods. Dinner at Tavanas and the luaus provided an opportunity to sample exotic food. Most agreed that the high point of the trip was the catamaran sunset dinner sail on their last night in the 50th state. Ms. Odle picking up some samples of black sand at Kaimu Beach. The cheerleaders sponsored sucker day, a chain link contest, and a VW car race. The chain link contest was a hotly contested affair in which the sophomores defeated the seniors, however the seniors got revenge in the VW race by copping first. The bonfire was held Thursday night with the traditional garter presentations. Friday turned out to be a beautiful fall day for the parade and game. In the afternoon float competition, the seniors won first fol- lowed by the sophomores and juniors respectively. The art club won the car com- petition. The Cornjerkers lost the football game to Schlarman 20-6. Nevertheless, the evening ended with a well-attended dance at the Civic Center featuring the Odyssey.” 32 33 Judy Norris Crowned Queen 34 35 Fall Play Presented Nov. 17th and 18th The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch, a three act play by James L. The few words that we spoke were cold and contained no meaning Yet I felt the unspoken feelings that drifted from within A confused soul. A loneliness touched me watching you slowly walk away in a silhouette of the disappearing sun Yet I felt that someday we would meet once again. In a loving heart. Cathy Hatfield Problems America America is freedom, America is peace America has dignity, America has grace, America gives you peace of mind. Nowhere else can it be found. And in any other country, to that country you'd be bound. Ay, America is the country, with the favored way of life. Where a woman picks her husband. And a husband picks his wife. Where one is free to travel anyplace that he decides. And for the poor, everywhere, our country will provide. We often look at the painful side of everything that’s wrong, Yes, that is why I plead to you. Listen to my song . . . Babies born unwanted. Endangered creatures hunted. Countries fighting wars. Streets are filled with whores. Families that are poor. Oil slicks on shore. Storms that will not calm A waiting atomtioi Chip Hultquist Violence on the set,T Countries choked by debt. Political parties fight. Minorities lose their rights. m M x iHL Problems that are mine. Make me moan and whine. Problems suffered by all. Make my hurts look small People who cannot hear. People who live in fear. People who cannot see. Are luckier than me. Dave Dukes A Senior Remembering As I walk down these empty halls, I remember I remember the laughs and the tears, my hopes and all my fears. But most of all, I remember the sad feeling of saying goodbye. 188 The days left are but a few. And as I leave. I’ll remember all of you Friends, acquaintances, teachers, too. All who helped us to get through. Empty lockers, torn-up books Are things we give one long last look. Newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, class ring. At this time all very important things, Ballgames, dances, even tests. Are things we’ll remember along with the rest. But now we'll go on to a new challenge each day, | With many memories to help us along the way- cr' Happy, sad, a smile, some tears. All now just memories of our high school years. Ann Singletd Glennie Browne Travolta Fever ‘Travolta Fever” has come alive! Disco's the thing — no hustle or jive. The Road of Life Swirlin', dancin' to the beat. Travolta Fever” — it’s got heat! Travolta Fever lets you prove. You've got what it takes and you know how to move! You’re not a loser or even a dud If Travolta Fever” is in your blood! Travolta Fever” makes it right On a movin' Saturday night”! You know it's real, you know it’s true “Travolta Fever” will soon get you! Cathy Hatfield These Games The season's over, some say too soon , We went farther than most, and less than few But still there's something, I know that's true ' I feel nothing but pride for the red, white, and blue. The roads of life. They come to where we are. And go where we build them. Its end we cannot see. The road from the past Experience with mistake and success. And with that knowledge We plan for tomorrow The road at present. Enjoying good friends, Anticipating the future MBUMHH Remembering the past. The road to the future. Planned or accepted quietly. It is a source of hope And a reason for living. Dirk Minick Meek I love these games of basketball. The guys who play to us, look tall. They work all year to reach The Hall.' For there it's said, you win it all. r t There's no one you can really blame Win or lose, it's still the same. But still it seems a terrible shame. We couldn't win just one more game. I p if$ono i j As I see the rows of tears I try to remember, we've had our cheers. And I c an't help but love my schooltime peers. Sjjremember these games the rest of Dave Dukes. I love you because: You do the right things at the right You brighten up my day. i care about my thoughts and feelings i beautiful smile. You say things to build my self-confidence. You go out of your way to do little things for me. You know what I like and dislike. You love me. But most of all I love you because ydu re you and not just someone I dream about being like you. Marilyn Walder I think of the men I’d like to be like. Like JFK and General Ike. I think of ol’ Abe, known by all, I think of me, I seem so small. No one knows me, except myself. Yet these men were put up, high on the shelf. People point at the eagle which soars up above. Yet the sparrow unnoticed, the sparrow unloved Nobody celebrates the date of my birth. Yet remember the meek. Shall inherit the earth. Chip Hultquist I sit alone, as I have before. Put on my headphones, 1 lock the door I doodle on paper, stare at the ground I think of my love, no longer around. We broke up forever, tears fill my eyes. I wipe them away with a happy disguise. We can go back together, but it won't be the same. For we've broke up forever and our love is now lame. ■ 1 Chip Hultquist 189 Student Index Albertson, Clint 110 Albertson, Lonnie 124 Aleshire, Cynthia 110. 94 Alexander, Robin 110 Allen, Mike 124 good variety of pictures and facts. Thank you to all the teachers and administrators who put up with our interruptions. I would also like to thank Cynthia, Janna, Glennie, Marilyn, Kevin, Jill, Barb, Ann, and Carol- gene. Also, a special thanks to Corey Mundwiler, our Taylor representative. Obviously, our book would not have been possible without the great picture taking efforts of Sudlow’s, Mr. Sheagley, Jane and Cindy. Last but not least, I would like to extend my sincere appre- ciation to Ms. Odle for her guidance. Row 1: M. Walder, A Singleton, G. Browne, C. Hartz. Row 2: Ms. Odle, K. Dain, J. Leigh, C. Baum.
