Mrs. Layden was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin and attended high school at Burling- ton. She graduated from Marquette University and then taught for two years at Cashton, Wisconsin. After mar- rying Tom Layden in 1944, she moved to the Hoopeston area where she has lived ever since. Her position in District 11 included teaching at Lin- coln, Cheneyville, and Honeywell schools. From 1964 to 1976, she taught English and Speech at Hoopeston- East Lynn High. In between these times, Mrs. Layden took off a fourteen year period in which she had her seven children. During this past year, she has been busy spending time with her family, serving as bookkeeper for Hill Packing Company - a family enterprise, and quilting. Coach Quentin Ryder's cross country team compiled the best season in the last six years with a 16-0-1 record. They were champi- ons of both the Vermilion County tournament and the Wauseca Con- ference. This spectacular record also included copping second place out of fifteen in the 1HSA district and eighth place out of fifteen in the 1HSA sectional. Other meet results included: winning second out of fourteen at the Bismark Invita- tional, winning sixth out of nine- teen at the Paxton Invitational, and winning seventh out of thirty-two at the St. Joe-Ogden Invitational Classic. Top individual honors for the sea- son went to juniors Harry Gudeman, Eric Haughee, and sophomore Scott Huffman. All three received All- County, All-Conference, and All- East Central Illinois. Gudeman had the distinction of being rated num- ber one in the All-East Central vote. Kim Baker led in number of wins with 8, followed by Shawn Lane with 3 and Patti Hari with 1. Seniors on the squad included Kim Baker - pitcher, Teryl Gaumer - shortstop and outfield, Ava Neathery - second and outfield, Tammy Longfellow - left field, and LeAnn Peterson - right field. The Hoopeston tournament, held at McFerran Park, saw the HEL team copping first place in the consolation round, with the championship going to St. Joe-Ogden and second place to Jamica. This year was also the first one in which pre- liminary games were scheduled. The JV's finished with a 3-2 record. Kim Nelson proved to be a very promising young pitcher prospect. Football Finishes With 1 -8 Record HEL finished their 1976 football season with a disappointing 1-8 overall record and a 1-5 for the Wauseca Conference. However, in his first year coaching football, Jim Richards found himself plagued with many injuries and sicknesses. The year's big win came on Homecoming night against Westville with a 13-12 score. A last min- ute attempt by the opponents to secure a field goal ended in failure. The victory was a special one, not just because of Homecoming, but also because Westville had been rated a 12 point favorite. Awards for the season went to: Barry Field - high rusher, Jim Taflinger - high passer, Shawon Wise - high receiver, Kevin Kriebs - high scorer, and Russ Leigh - high tackle. VARSITY: ROW 1: C. Ramos. The group won second place at the October 2 Danville Invitational in both parade and field competition. At the University of Illinois marching band contest, HEL placed fourth in field competition out of 13 bands in Class B. And then on October 19, they captured first place in the Vermilion County competition at Georgetown. The band participated in the Sweet Corn Festival Parade, the Homecom- ing Parade, and all home football games. The rifle corps exhibition. The parade left the high school at 2:00 Friday afternoon. After the chilling journey to the corner of Main and Market, Susie Lane was announced as the 76 Homecoming queen. Her attendants included Shelley Riley and Cindy Drollinger. Jun- ior attendants were Karen Weger and Rhonda Carswell, while sophomore attendants were Cathy Hatfield and Susan Kuntz. Float competition results showed the Junior class coming in first with the Sophomores second and the Seniors third. In the car competition, the Camera Club entry took first, followed by the Honor Society's second. Probably the brightest spot of the entire cele- bration came at the football game when the Corn- jerkers won their first and only victory of the year over the Westville Tigers. At the Assembly Hall in Champaign, Grant lost to Angaran of Riverdale in a 12-1 decision, while Ervin lost through a pin to Lizer of Dakota. We lost the five games by a total of 17 points and three of those games were decided in overtime action. Probably the most memorable contest was that of the sectional championship game. With only two seconds to go and the game tied 56-56, a Crescent-Iroquois player shot a mid-floor desperation shot that hit its tar- get, thus ending HEL’s hopes for a berth in the Elite Eight. The story centers around a WWII romance of a Navy nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas and an exiled French planter on a South Pacific island. The second romance concerns a Marine lieutenant who falls hopelessly in love with a Polynesian girl, but refuses to marry her because of racial differences. Music was furnished by the HEL pit band. Play directors were Mr. Voorhees and Mr. Samaras. Carol Sanders served as student stage manager. Family Living Classes Hold Simulated Weddings The fifth and seventh hour family living classes held their mock weddings May 12 and May 13 for the entire student body. Seniors in the class arranged the entire process from writing invitations, arranging flowers, choosing clothing apparel to baking the cake for the reception. All students participated in the ceremony as either members of the wedding party or the family. Julie Holt escorted by Mr. Griffin. TOP- Richard Lacy tells Phil Bailey that the time is near.
