That force is know n to us all to be the Spirit of ’76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowl- edge that one man's freedom is more important than anything else on earth. Ii is the SPIRIT OF FRON- TIER — of not fearing to go where man has not reached. George ashington Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton James Madison John Hancock 11 is the SPIRIT OF INDIVIDUALISM — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn front the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76” was, and is, many things, each of which has been a building block of our national greatness. Our country grew on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. m Administration di “Ours is the only country deliberately founded on a good idea.” John Gunther DISTRICT 11 SUPERINTENDENT: Leo Huffman SCHOOLBOARD: F. The 1975 HEL Cross Country team set a Cornjerker record for dual wins 22-1, losing only to the state ranked Danville team. In addition, they finished third in both the Bismarck-Henning Invitational and the prestigious St. Joe-Ogden Spartan Classic. The star of the team, senior Ernie Linares, led individually in dual meets 18-4, and was named all East Central Illinois, All Conference, and 1975 All County Champ. Another senior, Dave Cook, was also named All-County, along with sophomores Eric Haughee and Harry Gudeman. Senior Merle Eisen- mann and freshman Scott Huffman were awarded Honorable Mentions. The returning junior varsity team looks promising, as they placed well individually as well as being the co-champions of the Wauseca Conference. The HEL football season was filled with high aspi- rations, crushing defeats, and incredible surprises through the fall of 1975. Many very capable under- classmen emerged to replenish the nine graduating seniors, all of whom showed tremendous spirit and enthusiasm throughout the season. Bill Aleshire was top ground gainer for the Corn- jerkers with an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Tim Goodrum, Barry Fields and Dave Watson scored a total of 96 points for the team while Barry Fields averaged 31.6 yards per punt, compared to the opponents' 26 yard average. Defensively, Noe Gonzalez led with 111 tackles followed closely by Kevin Kriebs with 105. The Wauseca Conference recognized four HEL sen- iors. Tim Goodrum received a Special Mention, while Mark Wagoner, Joe Bury, and Noe Gonzalez all received Honorable Mentions. The team will certainly miss its captain Melia Neathery, who displayed outstanding sportsmanship and leadership throughout her years in the game. Noriko Shimotsuma, our exchange student, also greatly assetted the team with her quick returns and Japanese style. The team learned to play more powerfully this year, capitalizing on the bump pass, the overhead set, and the spike. Coach Vines anticipates her returning players, as the JV team finished their season with a spectacular win over top-ranked Danville in addition to having a winning record. One of the season's high points was that of our winning the consolation bracket in the 4th annual HEL tourney. ABOVE: Melia Neathery spikes another one. BELOW: Anna Blakey returns a serve. The fresh-soph team also received a first at the Catlin tournament. Many school records were broken this year by three outstanding individuals. Barry Field set a record with 21 escapes, while senior Gordon French led in rever- sals with 17. The greatest single achieve- ment was that made by Don Warner, who tied the pin record and broke the record for the most points. He led the team in takedowns and produced a 30-2-1 win record for the season. Seniors Dave Shoufler and Joe Bury will also be missed next year, however, with 26 undergraduates returning. The 1975 Homecoming has come and gone, but our remembrances of the tingling excitement we felt during that week still lingers on. It started with the bonfire - a crackling blaze, several refrains of our school song, pep talks, and girls giving away garters to their favorite football player. The parade fol- lowed on Friday with the marching band, fire truck, floats, and queen candidates. The junior float, Crush the Toppers, won first place honors followed by the sophomores and the seniors with second and third places respectively. National Honor Society won first place for best deco- rated cars with the slogan You can do it, if you put your mind to it. Schlarman proved to be the unyielding aggressor during the big game that evening, but HEL did man- age to hold an 8-7 halftime lead over the Hilltop- pers. The rest of the game proved disheartening to the Cornjerkers as they were defeated 33-14. After much intense ridicule, the initiates were subjected to a timed treasure hunt, in which they had to ’’discover some very unusual objects. The following week, a Thespian banquet was held in honor of the new members at the Luxor in Dan- ville. I must extend a special thank you to the Staff - Sarah, Debbie, Cathy, Nora, Becky, Elizabeth, Nancy, Tammy, Terry, David, Glenn, Scott, and Brad for all their hard work and faithful attendance. Thanks must go especially to Scott and David for their extremely successful ad soli- citation. My gratitude also extends to photographers Don, Mark, and Scott and to Mr. Sheagley for his dedicated assistance. I sincerely appreciate all the help and critical suggestions from Ms. Odle. It is my earnest hope that everyone will appre- ciate our efforts in portraying HEL's ninety-eighth year. After reading the above, all I can add is an acknowledgement to Sudlow's and our Taylor man, Corey Mundwiler. Thanks again staff - it was a very good year!
