Wins First Place Downtown Hoopeston was the scene of action on October 18th, 1974. Highlights of the parade included the announcement of winning entries and the introduction of our Homecom- ing royalty. Gaining top prize in the float cat- egory was the Senior float with the theme Tame the Tigers. The Junior and Sopho- more floats placed second and third respec- tively. Rock Steady With the Jerkers brought Pep Club first place in the car division. FT A Taught the Tigers to receive the second award, with the Woo Baby Hun car garner- ing third. Juniors' Hanging the Tigers. The sophomores' first float. Senior attendants, Beth Manis, Sherree Hannie, Darleen Rudin. Sherree escorted by Scott Schlueter. Crowned Queen The 1974 Homecoming game proved our Jerker spirit to be strong with a 21-0 tromp over Westville, a Wauseca foe. At half- time, Sherree Hannie, escorted by Scott Schlueter, was crowned the 1974 Homecom- ing Queen. Her senior attendants were Beth Manis, escorted by Marvin Miller and Dar- leen Rudin escorted by Jerry Urich. Lisa DeWitt, whose escort was Arlyn Rudin and Pat Stipp, escorted by Merle Eisenmann were the Junior attendants. The Sophomore attendants were Julie Holt, escorted by Mark Alt and Cindy Drollinger, escorted by Barry Field. The Marching Comjerkers provided excellent entertainment and some clowns set free balloons from a circus wagon. Fire- works filled the air, as halftime drew to a close. The Homecoming dance was held at the Civic Center, featuring the Slink Rand group. Shenee Hannie 1974 Homecoming Queen 33 Company 75 Stages Fall Production On Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, Novem- ber 2 and 3, Company 75 presented Neil Simon's The Odd Couple starring David Bauer as Felix and Jerry Urich as Oscar. Directed by Mr. Reed, who was aided by stage director, Heather Mace, and student director, Becky Milton, the comedy tells the story of two men who decided to share an apartment in New York after their marriages broke up. They discover that in bunking together, they are as unsuited for each other as they had been with their wives. It was amusing to see Oscar, a messy sports- writer, and Felix, an insanely neat businessman dif- fer on everything that arose. Including the supporting cast and technical crews, the production provided 40 students with an opportu- nity to work in the fall production. In January, three assemblies were presented: the Chanute Air Force Band, the Spies and Traitors dramatic presentation on American injustices, and a Kung Fu demonstration. Ed Schetter, a yoga expert, gave a particularly interesting exhibition dur- ing the month of March. A talent show and Farewell Assembly was held on June 3, culminating with the presentation of a gift to the AFS student, Peter Boell- ing. Horton Yeung's Kung Fu demo. Why do birds suddenly appear? on December Twentieth 39 Sound of Music Termed Combining excellent choreography and fine sing- ing, the Drama and Music departments succeeded in producing Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. This musical portrays the story of an Austrian fam- ily in the 1930's. Maria Rainer, a postulant, finds that she is too exuberant to conform to convent life. She is encouraged by the Mother Abbess to be the governess for the Von Trapp family. After arriving in their home, Maria finds that the children lead regi- mented lives dictated by their father. Her mere presence adds much joy and laughter to the family. She finally realizes that she is in love with the Cap- tain, so retreats back to the convent. Both Maria and the Captain finally admit their feelings and marry. As the Nazi threat becomes more of a menace, the entire family decides to evacuate their homeland after one of their folk singing concerts. The high school auditorium was the setting of four performances from March 20th to the 23rd. Maria sings in the hills. Left: The Captain and the children. His host family was the Glen Burke's. Peter arrived in Hoopeston Aug. 22 and started school here the following week. He became used to life in a small American town gradually. At HEL, his favorite subject was TV-Camera and his favorite sport was ping pong. Peter won both the high school age and the adult men’s championships in the local tournament. Throughout the year, Peter gave several slide presentations of his native country to var- ious civic groups in town. At the farewell assembly, Student Council presented him with a chess set. We will miss Peter and wish him the best. His address: 58 Hagen Main Str. 22 West Germany 52 ATHLETICS Cheerleaders Add VARSITY: P. Stipp, P. Burton, C. Bird, S. Hannie, C. Cox, D. Hollen. As soon as the band played its first note of the school song, the cheerleaders sprang into action. From that moment until the closing buzzer, whether we won or lost, they jumped, yelled, screamed, leaped, and cheered in their blue and white outfits complete with saddle shoes. During the fall, both the varsity and junior var- sity squads cheered the football teams through thick and thin and during the winter they sparked the basketball teams with spirit and fire. Meanwhile, the wrestling cheerleaders were spur- ring on the grapplers in their competitive events. The HEL cheerleaders hosted the seven schools participating in the Regional, and with the assist- ance of the Pep Club sponsored several pep assem- blies . 55 Row 1: (L-R) A. Reece, J. Compton, C. Despite its record Coach Velasco’s team dis- played skill and at the same time provided excite- ment for its fans. This team was capable of ferocious second half comebacks and excellent teamwork, but each game was unique in the utilization of these abilities. The Cornjerkers outgained their opponents 1922 - 1752 in total offensive yards, but were outs- cored 128 - 107 in the season. Our gridders chalked up 1421 yards rushing compared to their opponents' 1170 yards. H-EL's passing yards were overthrown by their opponents 582 - 501, but H-EL had a total of five TD passes as compared to three by their oppo- nents. The Jerkers boasted some of the area's top individ- uals. Dan Eckert was unanimously chosen for the Wauseca All-Conference team as a defensive safety and Tim Drollinger, a second year member, earned a linebacker slot. Wide receiver Joe Compton also received the honor of backing them up with an hon- orable mention listing. 57 SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL: Row 1: (L-R) V. Barron, R. Harden, S. Wise. B. Aleshire, R. Compete in 14 Meets and 3 Invitationals The 1974 HEL Cross Country team despite a better-than-average 11-8 duel record, proved to be one of the best small school harrier teams in the area. In three championship meets, the Cornjerkers never failed to cop a trophy. They seemed to rise to the occasion in the major meets as evidenced by their finish- ing 4th in the 19-team Paxton Invita- tional, 3rd in the 15-team Bismark Invi- tational, and perhaps their best perform- ance - a 5th place finish in the presti- gious 34-team Spartan Classic at St. Joe- Ogden. This fine harrier team finished second in the Wauseca Conference and only an injury to former County Champ Ernie Linares, whose finish failed to support a 1,2,5 finish by Brian Bretz, Dave Cook, and Tim Maul, forced the Cornjerkers to give up the County Crown after a two- year domination. 61 Jerkers Compile The 74-75 Cornjerkers finished their season with a 23-5 record while winning the Wauseca Conference Championship and the Vermilion County Championship for the second consecutive year. Three of the year's losses came at the hands of the Oakwood Comets. Each of those games was lost by a mere three point margin. One of the season high points came on January 25th, when the roundballers vindicated two ear- lier losses to Oakwood by capturing first in the County. The title game at Westville saw the Jerk- ers shooting .510 from the field and .73 from the line. On February 15th, HEL captured the Wauseca Conference title by a 75-69 overtime victory over Watseka. They later went on to capture 3rd in the State. The Byrdmen maintained a scoring average of 70.3 for the season as compared to their oppo- nents’ 52.4 average. 62 23-5 Season 1974-1975 Wauseca Conference Standings W L HEL 10 1 Watseka 9 2 Schlarman 7 4 Westville 5 6 Gibson City 4 7 Paxton 3 8 Georgetown 1 10 63 Varsity Roundballers Win Wauseca Left: S.
