•- • %l A • i • - V , • ’• • «• • • • • -f. This year we honor a woman who has faithfully served Hoopeston High School as Secretary in the office of Superintendent of Schools. For all her cheerfulness and consideration given to students and faculty members in the past, we re- spectfully dedicate the 1967 PICAYUNE to Miss Naomi Alkire. 2 DMINISTRATION . AND FACULTY School Board Robert Langdoc, Harry Silver, Edward Layden, Jr. , William Samaras Leo Huffman, Clyde Timmons, Jr. , Mar- vin Custer, Maruice Hayes, Joseph Moore. Absent Ed Trego. To the Students of Hoopeston High: This has been a pleasant year and I know that some of the seniors are leaving with mixed emotions, but are looking ahead to the future. Make the most out of what you have where you are. It is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving. Remem- ber that happiness is achieved by adding something to life, not getting something from life. The best of luck to you in your future. Leo C. Huffman, Superintendent Hoopeston School District 4 LEO C. HUFFMAN, Superintendent Bradley University; University of Colorado; B. S. andM.S. University of Illinois. To the Seniors of 1967: It has been a pleasure watching you go through this past year at Hoopeston High School. Your physical changes are recorded in the school yearbook for all to see; however, the other changes that you have made through the years are more important because they show the true development that each of you has made. Some of the changes have been brought about by failures, but you have learned that the only time that you must not fail, is the last time you try. When you leave Hoopeston High School, you will leave a part of yourself behind and go in search of your life's ambitions. For some it will be a short trip, but for others it will be a long journey. Whether the journey is short or long does not matter, but may it all be in the footsteps of God. John F. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Our faithful sponsors, Mr. Lobb and Mr. Gire, put forth a real effort to try and organize the sophomores. In the fall we elected our class officers who were; President-Chet Summers, Vice-President-Jeanne Law, Secretary-Judy Brockway, and Treasurer-Randy Price. Brenda Anderson, Jane Clarke, Nancy Irwin, Janet Kincaid, and Lynn Spick- ard, who were elected our Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, cheered our teams to great football and basketball seasons. Coach Parrish and his football team had a 6-2 record, while our basketball team, under the coaching of Coach Ryder, had a fine spirit and always fought hard. With a tremendous amount of fun involved, our homecoming float was a big success, until the ghastly wind hit it. We elected Judy Brockway and Jeanne Law as our attendants. You'll be hearing a great deal of the Sophomore Class as we climb the ladder toward success. 17 Scenes Jn and Out of S. LIFE'S REALLY EASY H-H-H-H-M-M-M-M P.E. CLASS??? YOU DID IT!! Realizing the responsibility and need for leadership for our many activities, we chose Sid Longfellow, President; Don Olson, Vice-President; Alice Reed, Secretary; and Ruby Hall, Treasurer. Jane Anderson, Debbie Bartlow, Kathy Reed, Craig Songer, Steve Weaks, and Jim Gholson, were chosen as our Student Council representatives. With these dependable leaders and our sponsors, Miss Shaklee and Mr. Sheagley, we knew we would come through the year with success. At Homecoming we were proud to have Bonnie Mann and Jeanie Lohmeyer as our attendants. We were equally proud of our float that took third place in the parade. Members of our class chosen as cheerleaders were Sharon Price, Jane Anderson, and Debbie Nolin. Along with the rest of the school, we helped make the AFS Carnival a success by planning a Spook House as our project. One of our main goals this year was to present our graduating Seniors with an unforgettable prom. It was a great success and we thank each and every student for being co-operative and working so hard for its success. It was really a year full of wonderful memories. We are looking forward to our next and last year at HHS. 24 Jn Memory John William Burt, a member of the class of 1967, was killed in a tragic accident on May 25, 1967. During the three years in which he attended HHS, John contributed much of his time to the school and its many ac- tivities. All of us who knew him will treasure the memory of this active, cheerful boy. To John, the class of 1967 dedicates this page. There comes a time for all of us when we must say good-bye But faith and hope and love and trust can never, never die! Although the curtain falls at last, is that a cause to grieve? The future is fairer than the past if only we believe And trust in God’s eternal care. So when the Master calls, Let's say that life is still more fair although the curtain falls. 25 ROBERT ANDREW ALKIRE Bob” AMBITION: To lead a happy and successful life. THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Twelve years of our search for wisdom and understanding have come to an end. Our search has at times seemed long and hard, but most of the time it has been filled with good times and happy memories. We started the year by electing our class officers--Mike Eells, President; Tim Shepherd, Vice-Presi- dent; Jane Timmons, Secretary; and Brenda Rickart, Treasurer. Mrs. Layden and Mr. Haslett were our sponsors. The year has held many memorable events for us such as Homecoming, Senior Week, Honors Day, and many others. Debbie Comstock was chosen as our Homecoming Queen, with Suellen Gardner, Brenda Rick- art, and Christina Martin as the Senior Attendents. The Seniors were well represented this year in the school's many clubs and organizations as well as on the athletic teams. Representing our class on the Student Council were Tim Shepherd, Tom Benjamin, Tom Cleveland, Karen Spickard, Diane McVicker, Christina Martin, and Marilyn Miller. The Senior cheerleaders were Betty Wood and Suellen Gardner. Therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding. (Proverb IV:7) We feel that this expresses the wisdom we have gained, and the understanding we have and we hope to attain in the future. As our class flower we chose the Lily of the Valley. The Class of 1967 is one of which Hoopeston High School can be duly proud. 47 WOULD BELIEVE ! oooooe FQQOOOOO 0000009 ) 000008© Wills I, Bob Alkire, will my grease lightening draw with a piston to Steve Weaks. Student Council The Student Council is a service organization containing six members from each of the classes and Christina Martin, our exchange student. The work of the council is co-ordinated by four officers. Our first activity of the year, Homecoming, helped to arouse school spirit at H. H.S. Homecoming is one of our largest undertak- ings, planning all events from the bonfire to the dance. Christmas is always celebrated at school through deco- rations and a special program presented by the council in conjunction with the speech classes and the band. Money was collected from the students by the council for Christina to make a phone call home Christmas Day. Next on the agenda, the student council combined forces with the P.T. A. and the A. F. S. to secure funds for the foreign exchange student program. The chicken supper sponsored by the P.T. A. and the carnival sponsored by the student council, proved to be very successful. Student council members attended the District Student Council convention in the fall at Decatur, Illinois. Jane Anderson ran for an office and Jim Gholson represented our school as a discussion group leader. Two members also attended the state convention in Chicago this spring. The council sponsors two paid live assemblies and two full-length movies each year. In addition to these, there are many other assemblies which the council sponsors throughout the year. In the spring, the council sponsored the honor banquet for honor students and faculty members. They also challenged the faculty to a soft ball game and treated them to a picnic. The year 1966-1967 was brought to a close with our final assembly program which offered farewell to the senior class and our foreign exchange student, Christina Martin. The Argentina flag was presented to the school along with a picture of Christina to remind us of a girl we'll never forget. The officers are: President, John Stuebe; Vice-President, Suellen Gardner; Secretary, Jane Timmons; Trea- surer, Jane Anderson. The group sponsor is Lawrence Jahn. 60 Rational Honor Society National Honor Society Officers President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Historian Parliamentarian Publicity Sponsor Vaughn Cox Norman Klocke Kathy Olson Mike Eells Suellen Gardner Jim Shields Diane McVicker Mrs. Jones 61 Mall Monitors FRONT ROW: Jim Staton, Steve Snively, Mark Summers. The activities are varied but all are di- rected toward better stage productions. Among those backstage who share the ap- plause that the actors are receiving are the construction, painting, costume, and prop crews plus many others without whom the play could not go on. There are several profitable experiences to be gained from this extracurricular ac- tivity. Some of these are: the ability to organize, lead, and meet deadlines, the fun of working together to achieve a common goal, the pride when that goal is met, and the appreciation of the theatre arts. The officers for this year were: Bill Nelson, President; Steve Snively, Vice President; Lynn Jamagin, Secretary; Carol Goss, Trea- surer; and Steve Frazier, Sergeant at Arms. 67 I think I'll bum him, It isn't that funny.. is it? After Tim announced that Debbie had been chosen to reign over the 1966 Homecoming festivities, he proceeded to present her with a bouquet of red roses. Everyone listened as Debbie expressed her thanks at being chosen. Later that evening the girls were presented at a special half-time program. HOBBS’ VICTORY The evening started off with everyone dancing to the music of the Bill Montgerard Orchestra. The highlight of the dance was the crowning of the queen. Debbie looks smil- ingly around the room as she and her escort, Bruce Mayer, prepare for the queen's dance. The attendants and their escorts soon join in. 89 ??Zeacher’s Devotion?? PORTS Lynn Spickard Brenda Anderson Janet Kincade Nancy Irwin Jane Clarke 1966 Comjerkers Victory Season The Comjerkers started on the victory trail by edging the Georgetown Buffalos 20-19 in their first game of the 1966 season. It was a combined running and passing attack and a tightened second half defense that aided the Comjerkers in their first victory. The Watseka Warriers were next in line for the Comjerkers. The team played as good an offensive game as any Hoopeston team has displayed for some time. Also, the defense team left little to be desired. It was a fine victory to the tone of 34-6. It was then out of the Conference Competition as the Comjerkers were host to a good Westville team. It seemed that the Hoopeston boys had found what it takes to win games. Again, everything went right. The final score was 41-7 with the first eleven playing only the first half. The Homecoming Game was a heartbreaker as a fired up Gibson City team handed the Comjerkers their first defeat of the season. We just were not the same team that had won the three previous games. The final score was Gibson City 7 and Hoopeston 6. The following week the Schlarman Hilltoppers handed the Comjerkers another Watseka Conference loss as they were able to run their score to 35 points while holding the Comjerkers scoreless. The game lacked both offense and defense on the part of the Comjerkers. It seemed we had lost our desire. The big question was: Could we bounce back? But it was back on the winning streak for the Comjerkers, and the Oakwood Comets were their next victims. It seemed we had found the desire and hustle that was missing the two previous games. The second, third, and fourth team played most of the second half and helped the Comjerkers to a 33 to 0 win. The next week it was to Paxton and what was thought to have been a real tough game, proved to be another one- sided victory for the Comjerkers. Again the reserves got to see lots of action. The final score was Hoopeston 21--Pax- ton 6. The final game of the season proved successful for the Comjerkers as they rolled over the Rantoul Eagles 21 to 0. This was the first time a Hoopeston Varsity Team had been able to defeat a Rantoul team in over ten years. This ended the Comjerkers Football Season on a happy note and gave them a 6-2 won-lost record; one of the best for the school in many years. With four returning lettermen and three starters this was quite a disap- pointing season. After a very impressive win over Rossville, the CORNJERKERS lost some of their momentum with consecutive losses to Gibson City, Schlarman, and a triple overtime loss to Bismark. The most exci- ting win the CORNJERKERS produced was an overtime victory over Oakwood. The season was a series of heartbreaking losses, with the boys losing many games by less than six points. As defending County Champions we were eliminated in the first game by Georgetown, 66-56. How- ever, the season did close on a bright note, with the CORNJERKERS reaching the finals of the Regional Tournament before bowing to a fine St. Anne team. This game might have been reversed had Jim Sta- ton been able to play a full game. Only four seniors will be lost this year, but this includes some of the CORNJERKERS' scoring power, Barney Kirts, Terry McBride, and Jim Staton. Gary Pittman will also be lost. Barney Kirts was the only boy to place on any of the honor teams. He was named to the All-Con- ference and All-County teams and Honorable Mention on many other area teams. Two fine ballplayers, Terry McBride, and Jim Staton were recognized by the area coaches.
