Among them was that of Maria Almerinda Duarte Silva, who came to us from Vittoria, Brazil, through the AFS Program. Maria soon became well acquainted with students and faculty as well as the townspeople. She makes friends easily and always has a winning smile and a friendly word for everyone she meets. Maria is active in Student Council, Pep Club, and Madrigal. During this year's Homecoming activities, Maria was a Senior Queen Attendant. Everyone has enjoyed having Maria in Hoopeston for the year. When she returns to her home and family in Vittoria, we hope she will have fond memories of the Comjerkers . We know we will always remember her. Sank you. Beautiful for being such a good friend! YOU WOULDN’T DAREM! WELCOME TO HOOPESTON! MERRY CHRISTMAS, MARIA THE SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We of the Class of 1966 have finally reached the last of our years in high school. Our journey has at times seemed long and hard, but most of the time it has been filled with good times and happy memories. We started the year by electing our class officers--Dan Reed, President; Roger Long, Vice-President; Lynne Carter, Secretary; and Debbie Lane, Treasurer. Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Repp were our sponsors. This year has included many memorable events for the Seniors such as Homecoming, College Day, Senior Week, and Honors Day. Beth Sheagley was our Homecoming Queen, with Maria Silva and Joanne Timmons as the Senior attendants. We are proud of the many members of our class who re- ceived various honors throughout the year. The Seniors were well represented this year on the athletic teams and in the school's many clubs and organizations. Representing our class on the Student Council were Janet Grether, Toni Huber, Maria Silva, Carolyn Webb, Jed Holt, Mike Martin, and Dan Reed. The Senior cheerleaders were Carolyn Webb and Jill Barber. Twenty-one members of our class were enrolled in the D. O. Program. As our class flower we chose the yellow rose. Our motto is Today we are led, tomorrow we lead. We feel that it expresses our hopes and ambitions for the future, and we think the Class of 1966 is one of which Hoopeston High School can be proud. 15 GARY DEAN ALLISON •’Salad” AMBITION: To join the Marine Corps. Realizing the responsibility and need for leadership for our many activities, we chose Vaughn Cox, president; Tom Cleveland, vice-president; Jane Timmons, secretary; and Kathy Olson, trea- surer. Tom Benjamin, Tom Cleveland, Vaughn Cox, Suellen Gardner, Diane McVicker, and Jane Timmons were our Student Council Representatives. With these dependable leaders and our sponsors, Mrs. Layden and Mr. Haslett, we knew we would come through the year with success. At Homecoming we were very proud to have Brenda Rickart and Jane Timmons as our attendants. We were equally proud of our float, Paxton Falls , which took first place in the parade. Members of the junior class chosen as cheerleaders were Suellen Gardner, Diane McVicker, and Betty Wood. We congratulate all the Thespians and other award-winners in the junior class. Last but not least, the night we had all been waiting for, the Junior-Senior Prom. It was a great success and we thank each and every student for being co-operative and working so hard for its success. It was really a year full of wonderful memories. We are looking forward to our next and last year at HHS. 42 sophomores Anderson, Jane Baker, Everett Barker, Kathy Barnard, Christie Bartlow, Deborah Bell, Gary Bergstrand, Stephen Blankenship, Wanda Bloyd, Carolyn Bloyd, Cathryn Brown, Bridget Browne, Sam Browning, Donna Buhrmester, Terry Burge, Russell Burt, Marie Burton, Donald Cade, James Canfield, Richard Cannon, David Carlson, Randall Cawthorn, Diane Chesnut, Carla Compton, Glenn Compton, Vickie Coon, Dan Coon, Sam Correll, Debbie Curry, Jacqueline Custer, Terry Davis, Leon Day, Michael Denton, Brenda Dice, Dennis Edwards, Linda Fink, Ivan Fix, Joyce Fliesser, Peggy Flynn, Jackie Ford, Betsy Forshier, Barbara Franklin, Patricia Garrison, Willie Gholson, James Good, Rodney Gooden, Dorene Goss, Carolyn Gossett, Gerald Gustine, Linda Halcom, Terry Hall, Ruby Hamilton, Bob 45 Henk, Barbara Hickman, Rosalie Horath, Charles Hott, John Jarnagin, Clara Jenkins, Frank Johnson, Billy Johnson, Paul Justice, Arthur Kaag, Cindy Kaufmann, Lucy Kelley, Russ Kelnhofer, Art Killien, Lynne Knight, Charles LaBounty, Dave Lawson, Charlene Layden, Mike Leslie, Dwight Linares, Joe Lohmeyer, Jeannie Lohmeyer, Frances Longfellow, Sid Luttrell, Gary Luttrell, Lana Mann, Bonnie 46 Martin, Roger Matthews, Christine McBride, Jackie McBride, Woodrow McCullough, Rick McGinnis, Dave McIntyre, Becky McLain, Danny Means, Linda Miller, Bob Monroney, Linda Morgenroth, John Murphy, Robert Neal, Patsy Nichols, Daniel Nolin, Debbie Norris, Billy Olson, Donald Page, Leon Potts, Glenn Price, Sharon Reed, Alice Reed, Kathy Regan, Randy Richards, Linda Richmond, Ann 47 Rickart, Roberta Roark, Roy Roberts, Peggy Rosborg, James Russell, Cindy Schatz, Stephen Schieler, Jerry Schroeder, Ronald Schuen, Mary Sheppard, Gordon Sheppard, Mike Silver, Martha Simpson, Harold Smith, Jackie Smith, Janice Smythe, John Songer, Craig Steele, David Stipp, Virginia Swim, Larry Theobald, Dave Thomas, Everett Thomas, Penny Thrasher, Sue Unger, Stephen Wallace, Larry 48 49 Sponsor--Mr. Sheagley, Jim Gholson--President, Alice Reed--Secretary, Debbie Nolin--Treasurer, Steve Weaks--Vice President, and Sponsor--Miss Payne THE SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY By working hard and also having fun, the sophomore class has been re- warded for their many achievements. Led by All-Conference Tom McBride, Barney Kirts, and Danny Gardner, the CORNJERKERS opened the season with wins over rival Rossville and Gibson City before meeting forthcoming Wauseca Conference Champs, Schlarman. The CORNJERKERS continued with wins over Bismarck, Potomac, Rantoul, and Paxton before traveling to the Paris Tournament to suffer two consecutive defeats. Then came the County Tournament with the CORNJERKERS defeating Armstrong for the Championship. The season ended when the CORNJERKERS suffered their third defeat at the hands of Watseka. The starting five will suffer with the loss of Tom McBride and Danny Gardner; but the three returning starters Barney Kirts, Terry McBride, and Jim Staton will provide a good nucleus for next year's team. Juniors who should be very in- strumental in forming next year's team will be Gary Pittman, Dick Forshier, Mike Eells, and Greg Laird. Other seniors who were important to this year's team were Mike Martin, Jim Roberts, and Ron DeVore. Glenn did much for all the boys of Hoopeston when he coached both football and basketball at John Greer High for many years. Since lighting and playing facilities at Honeywell Field were becoming obsolete, the Hoopeston Boosters Club, Bill Reed, president, planned construction of a new field at Hoopeston High School. With the help of many local people and alumni, who had known Mr. Brasel as a coach, enough money was donated to see this project completed. Over the entry of this new modern addition to our school is a small sign which reads Glenn Brasel Field. The Boosters Club is proud to have had a part in keeping the name of this fine man in a place so prominent that athletes of the future will know he was a dedicated coach and admired by so many people. 66 Boosters Club Jill Barber Senior Carolyn Webb Senior Suellen Gardner Junior Betty Wood Junior Debbie Correll Betsy Ford Alice Reed Debbie Nolin Jackie McBride {Junior Varsity Cheerleaders CAROLYN WEBB SUELLEN GARDNER DIANE McVICKER BETTY WOOD JILL BARBER v A R S I T Y 69 Betsy lord Debbie Correll Mice Reed Jackie McBride Debbie ftotin The G. JOHN GREER PLAYERS John Greer Players is an organization made up of students interested in promoting the dramatic arts on a high school level. The activities are varied but all are directed toward better stage productions. Among those backstage who share the applause that the actors out front are receiving are the construction, painting, costume and prop crews plus many others without whom the play could not go on. There are several profitable experiences to be gained from this extracurricular activity. Some of these are: the ability to organize, lead, and meet deadlines, the fun of working together to achieve a common goal, the pride when that goal is met, and the appreciation of the theatre arts. 93 “Arsenic and Old Cace” Cast left to right: On stairs: Bill Nelson, Jim Gholson, Mike Regan, Steve Gudgel. Standing: Steve Frazier, Herb Glenn, Miss Payne, sponsor-director, Bruce Mayer, Joanne Timmons, Randy Knoll, John Burt, Steve Snively, Bob Alkire. Seated: Marilyn Schieler, Janet Grether, Tade Layden, Jerry Schieler. After a year without activity, John Greer Players started this year off with the production of Arsenic and Old Lace , The play is a comedy about two old maid aunts and their three nephews. The aunts, Abby and Martha, have the unusual habit of murdering old men who are unhappy and lonely. The many delightful, and sometimes surprising, occurences lead to mystery and hilarity. And who would ever believe that two innocent little old ladies could have 13 bodies buried in their cellar?! But they did--and the bodies caused many a sticky situation. John Greer Players worked hard to put on this play and it meant many late hours, but they enjoyed it. CHARGE! ! ! industrial Arts Club The Industrial Arts Club had a mild degree of success in their first year of formation by tying for second place in the car division of the Homecoming Parade Contest. The club is composed of interested students who are enrolled in Industrial Arts classes. As a community minded project, the members repaired toys for needy children during the Christmas season. Club officers for the 1965-66 year were: President, Sam Milton; Vice President, Russell Jenkins; Secretary, Gary Warf; Treasurer, Larry Gossett; Reporter; Tim Garrison; and the Club Advisor, Mr. Haslett. Cafeteria help: Craig Songer, Steve Weaks, Vaughn Cox, Debby Bartlow, Linda Horath, Marsha Long, Shirley Burhmester, Dianna Bailey, and Kathy Reed.
