Mrs. Betty Vines Mrs. Eileen Vines William Whitehouse OFFICERS President John Bergstrom Vice-President Delwyn Roark Secretary Martha Songer Treasurer Earl Longfellow Senior Class Story We, the Senior Class of 59, hold three distinguished honors. We were the last Hoopeston class to be gradual from the eighth grade, the last to attend a Hoopeston school as Freshmen, and the last class to be graduated that were students at John Greer when it was a High School. We started our high school careers by electing as our officers, Jack Gregory—president, Betty Mullins — secretary, and Jim Miles—vice-president. We were sponsored by Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Olson. Our Sophomore year we moved into our new Senior High building and were again cursed with being the litt! Freshmen of the school. Our sponsors were Bob Allen and Carmen Heacock while for officers we elected Jim Miles—president, Sandy Wells—vice-president, Barb Linck—secretary, and Joan Mott—treasurer. As our first year as upper classmen, we elected Jack Gregory—president, Bill Lloyd—vice-president, Joan Mott—secretary and Bud Longfellow—treasurer. We were all proud of the Prom we gave the Senior Class of 58. Our theme was Around the World in Eighty Days. Martha Songer and Larry McLain were our candidates for the Valentine dance and we were all delighted and honored when they were crowned King andQueen. John Bergstrom and Bill Lloyd represented our school at Boys' State while Marilyn Webb was representative for Girls' State. At the beginning of our Senior year we elected, what turned out to be, a hard working and efficient cabi- net. They were John Bergstrom—president, Delwyn Roark—vice-president, Martha Songer—secretary, anc Bud Longfellow—treasurer. The Seniors represented on the Student Council were Nancy McVicker, Nancy Herman, Tammy Walker, Andy Melin, Del Roark, and Bill Lloyd. Barb Linck was elected secretary and served the first semester, Mary Jane Silver—treasurer, Patti Mitchell — vice-president, and Marilyn Webb headed the clan as President. The Council’s foremost and most rewarding job was that of bringing the first foreign student, in Jette Pedersen, to Hoopeston. We all were honored and felt fortunate to know and go to school with Jette, and we will always re- member her. Homecoming festivities arrived and passed almost before we knew it. Our class float with the theme of We Expecting a Victory, won first place. Linda Lowe reigned as Queen of the Homecoming Dance. Her attendanf were Donna Smith and Jette Pedersen. Seniors chosen for Honor Society were Delwyn Roark, Dave Taylor, Sandra Edwards, who was elected secre- tary, and Carol Hartley. Bill Lloyd was elected president of the Society and, he, along with Patti Mitchell, Marilyn Webb, and John Bergstrom served their second year in the organization. Our many winter activities were highlighted by the Valentine Dance. Tammy Duffin and Ross Johnson were chosen to reign over the Sweetheart Ball. Contest time for the music department found Larry Ansley receiving a first at the district and went on to state to receive a number one rating. Spring brought on some of our final high school activities, which were, banquets, plans for graduation, Sen- ior Tacky Day, Senior Dignity Day, and Senior Teaching Day. Our final school dance, the Prom, found us being honored by the Juniors with a beautiful Hawaiian banquet and dance. The theme was carried out very well. The memorable event was highlighted by the crowning of tb King andQueen, Don Rector and Marilyn Webb. We chose red rosebuds for our class flower. Our class motto was Success is getting what you want--Happi- ness, wanting what you get. Bill Lloyd was named valedictorian of our class and John Bergstrom salutatorian. Marilyn Webb and Dave Taylor received the American Legion Good Citizen Awards and Patti Mitchell the Women’s Auxiliary Good Citizen award. Marilyn Webb was selected to receive the Susie Mills Scholarship award. Martha Songer and John Bergstrom were chosen for the DAR and SAR awards. Tammy Walker received the scholarship given by the Honor Society. Jette Pedersen was presented with a special American Legion award. We went through our Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies with mixed emotions; some were regretful and others—well,—just glad to get out. But all of us will carry a lot of fond memories and are thankful we stuck it out all four years. 1. JUNE BENNETT (June Bug) Pet Peeve: People who smoke in the cars with the windows up.... OFFICERS President Michael Frazier Vice-President Wayne Carter Secretary Jerry Cox Treasurer Ronnie Longest Junior Class Story Electing class officers began the Junior Class year. Mike Frazier was elected pres- ident; Wayne Carter vice-president; Jerry Cox secretary, and Ronnie Longest treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Means (first semester), Mrs. Malady (second semester), and Mr. Galloway. Linda Silver served as secretary of Student Council. Janice Collier, Barbara Cat- ron, Mike Frazier, Bob Welty, and Frank Young represented the class on the council. The junior Homecoming attendants were Donna Ferrel and Joyce Jordan. Our float, Have Ball Will Travel,” won third prize. The class sold magazines to finance the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. We chose a Hawaiian theme which turned out to be a great success. To add the finishing touch to being upper-classmen, our class rings arrived. For the crest we chose a large H which had an ear of corn, representing the Cornjerkers, in the center. Melvin Lockhart and Marilyn Harth were chosen junior candidates for king and queen oftheF.H.A. Valentine Dance. Five of our classmates were elected to National Honor Society. They were Mike Frazier, Susie Smith, Elaine Fleisser, Betty Nelson, and Joyce Jordan. Hoopeston High School cheerleaders were all members of the junior class. Jani Brockway, Cassie Dahlquist, Barb Catron, Lindy Marshall, and Kay Longfellow did a fine job of cheering our team during the football and basketball seasons. Elaine Goss was chosen by the American Field Service to go to Germany for eleven weeks this summer. Other junior candidates for this program were Betty Nelson, Susie Smith, and Ross Fetters. Our class made a fine showing in many of the school activities this year, as well as having a wonderful time. Next year we are hoping to have an even more successful year. Judy Sheppard, Ann Benjamin, Sharon Stark, Dick Vines, Jim Brougher, and Terry Forshier were elected to represent our class. Our homecoming float, which carried out the theme The Last of the Watsekans, won second place. Marcia Hamilton, chairman of the float committee, and her very able committee are responsible for this success. It was a successful year for the sophomore athletic teams, also. The basketball squad, coached by Robert Sanders, won 12 of their 20 games. The team was paced by the scoring punch of Randy Chestnut, Roy Burton and Dick Sweet. Coach Ralph Keller's football team had a fine 6 and 2 season, which was due mainly to scoring of end Dennis Noyes, and halfback Allen Irwin plus the aggressive line play of Howard Cox and Bud Johnson. Judy Sheppard, Rosalie Fraley and John Rossey participated in the district vocal contest. John Rossey went on to receive a second at State. Kay Whitehouse accom- panied them and many other musical events. Rosalie Fraley won first place and Karen Evans third in the V.F.W. patriotism essay contest. Silver Student Council The Student Council has made a fine record this year, introducing many new and worthwhile projects. The Homecoming was a tremendous success, with the theme of the dance, Blast Off to Victory, co-ordinating nicely with the fall play, Visit to a Small Planet. Another new idea, adding an artistic touch to the gala event was a special Queen's float covered in float paper with the Queen seated in the center of a gold tiara. At Christmas, the Council in conjunction with the music department sponsored an assembly program and held a Christmas Dance, the Snow Ball. In April an all-school square dance was held and later in May a semi- formal dance was held at the American Legion Hall to which students from East Lynn and Wellington were invited as guests. Also during the year four feature length movies were shown along with other well-planned assemblies. Each week the Council secretary made a report over the intercom of Student Council activities. Janice Collier and Frank Young were chosen to represent the Council at the Illinois State Student Council Convention. Patti Mitchell was a discussion leader at the convention. Mr. Baird accompanied the group. The best project, however, was the participation in the Foreign Exchange Student Program through which we received Jette Pedersen from Denmark. She has been so much a part of our school that we hate to say goodbye. In our final assembly program we presented her with gifts from students and faculty and a Danish Flag was pre- sented to the school to remind us of a girl we'll never forget. In turn we are sending Elaine Goss to spend eight weeks abroad as part of the Summer Abroad Program. Other candidates were Susan Smith, Betty Nelson and Ross Fetters. To help finance the Foreign Exchange Program the Council and Hoopeston High PTA sponsored a Pan- cake Supper which was a great success. We also thank all other organizations that helped us raise the necessary Honor Society BACK ROW: Carol Hartley, Joyce Jordan, Dave Taylor, John Bergstrom, Mike Frazier, Delwyn Roark, Susie Smith. The formal investiture service was held in an assembly program for the student body. Students are chosen on the basis of character, leadership, service, and scholar- ship. They are rated as follows: scholarship (each student must have a B average or above) counts two-fifths; extra-curricular activities, one-fifth; and character ratings by members of the faculty and Honor Society count one-fifth each. One hundred dollars, which is given to a deserving senior, will be raised by the group at a rummage sale. The group has put on four plays. A Visit to a Small Planet by Gore Vidal was part of the Homecoming weekend. A studio production of The Glass Menagerie by Tennesse Williams was double cast for two interesting performances. The winter production was an Agatha Christie mystery, The Mouse Trap. To bring the year to a grand finale the players are putting on George Gershwin’s Girl Crazy. Thespians Many new members have been added to the Thespian roll call this year. Several Thespians have also made Honor Thespian. To become a Thespian one must accumulate thirty points and seventy points must be made to become a Honor Thespian. An average of ten points can be made on one play. Thespian initation, formal and informal, is looked forward to by the members each year. As a Christmas project the group took a number of books down to both the Salvation Army Nursery and the Vermilion County Children’s Home. Also throughout the year a number ot parties were held with a farewell party being held at the Danville Dock. Four members of the staff attended the Illinois State High School Press Conference in October at the Univer- sity of Illinois to learn more about good journalistic practices. Future Homemakers of America The theme, Developing Our Personalities, led to many activities which helped to strengthen the expressed purposes of the Future Homemakers of America: Toward New Horizons. F.H. A. is a national organization of pupils who study homemaking in junior and senior high schools. We work together for a better and happier home life for everyone. We think that helping to make happy homes, now and in the future, is the most important thing we can do for democracy. Participation of the F.H. A. members helped the F. H. A. tree to grow a personality leaf in the following events: attending F. H. A. rallies; preparing a Thanksgiving basket for a needy family; planning and attending F.H. A. seasonal parties; sponsoring the annual valentine dance; planning the Daddy Date Nite and the Mother and Daughter Tea; touring the new U of I home economics department; and raising a fund to be used to send a delegate to F. Rifle Club The Rifle Club, although it hasn't set a- stounding records, has had a good year. The members have shown improvement with the participation in five matches this year. These matches were in competition with Springfield, Olney, Quincey, Henning, and Jacksonville. From the members participating in the matches the top five were chosen. Some of the members this year earned med- als and honors ranging from pro-marksman to sharpshooter medals. Dean Beaty, Henry East- burn, Woody Evans, Bob Butterworth, Joe Hos- kins, Jerry Walker, John Musson, and Don Cawthorn, are a few of the members receiving these awards. Gams Contest □ Linda Lowe, Homecoming Queen, accepts Spirit ear for Senior Class from Senior President, John Bergstrom. Mr. Baird is disqualified. First Pep Session To get the football season off with a bang, the student council and cheer- leaders sponsored a variety pep assem- bly. A week previous to the assembly, posters and announcements were made throughout the school telling the students to be awake--their gams might be the winner of the gams contest! A quick look at the dictionary will show you that gams is an old word meaning legs. A group of impartial judges (class officers) chose Bud Longfellow's gams as the prettiest, but not before Mr. Baird was disqualified from the race by the referee! This assembly was also the origin of awarding the class who could cheer the loudest at each assembly the spirit ear. The junior class won it at the last pep assembly, but they'll really have to cheer in order to keep it next year! Freshman Visitation Day j r Freshmen await instruction. John Greer Players Presents — Visit to a Small Planet was presented as one of the homecoming events! Susie Smith, John Bergstrom, Harold Carter, Melvin Lockhart. The Glass Menagerie was writ- ten by Tennessee Williams. It was presented as a studio production, which was a new experiment by the Players . The show was completely double cast for both performances. No admission was charged, and for the most part, the scenes were portrayed in pantomime. The Mousetrap This show, written by Agatha Christie, was the winter production of the season. The Players usually stage one mystery during the year, and this show held the audience in a state of high suspense when the stage darkened, then the murderer stran- gled his victim while whistling the catchy little nursery rhyme, Three Blind Mice. Girl Crazy, with a cast of 32, was a smash hit as the spring production. Homecoming Jette’s Program The final program of the school year was in honor of Jette Pedersen. A take-off on the This is Your Life program, it was M.C.ed by Marilyn Webb. The pictures 1 through 8 show Mr. Baird who met Jette; Mr. and Mrs. Boardman who were her fos- ter parents here; Mrs. Evans; Classmates Pat Mitchell, John Bergstrom and Tammy Walker; gifts given by the Student Council and the Faculty and Student Body; and the climax when the 49-star American Flag was presented by Frank Young and a Danish Flag was presented by Sharon Stark to commemorate the friendship made more mean- ingful by the personal friendship we have had with Jette. When I go back and look at my first day at school, I just happen to remember that I was sad there, too. Lets take a look at the wonderful time in between. I feel that I owe so much to all the teachers and kids for making it possible for me to have such a wonderful time. I wonder how many remember having heard of my ex- periences with the first football games--never got to understand them--talking about stupid foreigners! When I didn't understand too much of the language I wonder what has been told in the many jokes--anyway it was fun to see others laugh. Another thing I’ll remember, too, (besides everything else) is all the dances we have had. Especially the Prom, that was the highlight. All the work the juniors put into that was tremendous and the result, likewise. It is just impossible for me to find a thing I have not enjoyed. I know that you, next year, will get a find student. I hope she will enjoy her year here as much as I enjoyed mine, and that you all will be to her as you have been to me. That means wonderful. Alright, cheer up! With a smile I say hi. So thanks and goodbye to all of you teachers and kids and thousands of thanks. I'll never forget you. Editor's note: she did not know this would be printed in the Picayune but we felt it was too good to leave out.
