HISHI Ylll IHI Illllllllll Slllllllll SYSHM From an adobe cla1m shack to prop erty worth nearly 400 000 at present construct1on costs xs a good growth for any flrm ln the forty s1x years of then' h1story Hooker schools show th1s 1n crease 1nvaluat1on No other busmess ln Hooker has greater strength or more hopeful prospects School days for Hooker began when Mxss Maggle Murphy held a subscrlptxon school ID June 1904 Mr C C Remmel offered the use of h1s adobe bu1ld1ng east of the present Haddock property the new d1str1ct furmshed lumber for desks We were off' Mxss Lola Burch taught thefxrst full term of school 1904 1905 1n the Acker bu1ld1ng on East Gladys Avenue The f1rst bu1ld1ng of the d1str1ct was readyfor the year of 1905 1906 Mr E J Albrxght gave a lot from h1s property at the corner of Swem and Johns 1n the northwest corner of town Accept1ng th1s offer the school board soon pur chased the remalnder of the block The new bu1ld1ng, 28 by 36 feet cost S700 Among the twenty e1ght pup1ls who en Albrxght and Nannxe Tucker Mrs Wm Burdge J School populatxon grew so ra p1dly that three teachers we re needed the next year Two taught rn the new bu1ld1ng the new supermtendent occupled the south room 1n the upper story of the H1xon bu1ld1ng on the s1te of the Burdge Hard ware The secondschoo1bu1ld1ng two sto nes hlgh 32 by 60 feet was bu1lt 1n 1907 It had space for four classrooms but lt was thought that the upper story mxght not be needed for school The or1g1na.l bond 1ssue for th1s school was S3000 Our present h1gh school and grade school are the th1rd and fourth school buxldmgs of the d1str1ct The former was completed m 1920 and the latter ln 1925 Money for added needs ln school space was not ava1lable through the drouth years and through World War II Twenty f1ve years have passed smce the erect1on of the present bu1ld1ngs The cafeter1a the former Dague school bu1ld1ng was added m 1949 and the h1gh school lxbrary was expanded the same year The 1mportance of Hooker as the Cen ter of a great agrmcultural area and the erectlon of the Panoma plant wxth the other great gas 1nterests 1n and near Hooker make the need of more school space 1mperat1ve The complet1on of our new bu1ld1ng w1ll make poss1ble the ex pans1on so long needed Our seventh exghth and nxnth grades w1ll be reorgan 1zed next year as a modern Jumor hwh school located 1n the new classrooms Four year courses rn home economxcs and 1n shop work wrll be avaxlable to all hxgh school students followmg the alter at1on of the old aud1tor1um There w1ll be an adequate gymnas1um and a spac1ous stage and aud1tor1um Our schoolproperly honors the many members of the var1ous school boards who have g1ven so much t1me to the many problems of the school Dr W J R1sen and J J Parham were among the p1o neer members Mr W11l1am Burdge has glven the longest term of servlce Alumm of Hooker H1gh have served and are now serv1ng on the School Board w1th d1st1nc shall 1909 and G1enTeel 1921 Pres ent board men 1nclude Thomas Metcalf 19 3 G A Dyslnger 1932 Elmer Baker 1928 andDevonVo1les 1935 L L Burdge 1933 has been a member of the current board Supermtendents who have dlrected the Hooker school system are the followmg J M Brown1ng Lon Payne I.
