Inauguration Cn October 21 in the Hodson Outdoor Theatre, five hundred students joined with the faculty, administrators, alumnae, and distinguished guests to witness the induction of Andrew Crehr Truxal as third president of Hood College. The sig- nificance of the occasion placed the events of this day among our most cherished experiences at Hood. Working together to make the inauguration a success bound us into a closer fellowship as members of Hood College. After weeks of excited preparation, the campus was ready for the arrival of fifteen hundred guests. Classes were suspended and each student had a job ushering, registering guests, assisting with parking or at receptions, or giving information to visitors. At 10:45 the colorful procession of over three hundred academic per- sonages, which included leading churchmen and presidents, deans and representa- tives of colleges and universities throughout the South, East and Middle West, formed in Alumnae Hall to march to Hodson, flanked on either side by the entire student body. Dr. Henri L. G. Kieffer, member of the board of trustees and pastor emeritus of the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Frederick, presided, and Dr. Iohn Lentz, vice-president of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, presented the invocation. The importance of education was stressed by the guest speaker, Presi- dent lsaiah Bowman of The Iohns Hopkins University, who said that education must be thought of in terms of the individual's relation to the community, and that every man must recognize himself as a responsible, willing, intelligent citi- zen of the community. - After having been formally inducted into office by accepting the college charter from Mr. R. Paul Smith, president of the board of trustees, President Truxal deliv- ered his speech of acceptance, pledging his devotion to Hood and stating that the number one profession of the American woman is and always will be that of homemaker, and that only an adequate education in twentieth century terms can fit them for this supremest of tasks. Following the inauguration a reception in honor of President and Mrs. Truxal was held in Meyran Drawing Room, after which delegates, special guests, and members of the senior class attended the inaugural luncheon in Coblentz Dining Hall. Speakers at the luncheon, at which President Theodore Distler of Franklin and Marshall College acted as toastmaster, included Governor William Preston Lane, Ir., of Maryland, President Iohn Sloan Dickey of Dartmouth College, Dr. Helen Bragdon, president of Lake Erie College and a former dean of Hood College, Dr. William E. Lampe, secretary of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, Mrs. Iames L. Reid, president of the Hood Alumnae Association, and Ioan Schmitt, president of the Cooperative Government Association. After the luncheon a second recep- tion Washeld in Meyran Drawing Room for the luncheon guests. When the day ended, each member of the Hood College community felt as Ioan Schmitt did, when she said at the luncheon, We welcome you, Dr. Truxal, as our new president. We will be very proud to follow you. 8
