His keen vision, untiring energy, and guiding in. telligence, have led the college through a period of increasing expansion and growth to a position of honor. His interest in all l things, his quiet understanding, and his genuine good humor, have made him forever a part of Hood for us whom he led. It is with deep admiration that we dedicate this Touchstone to him. Khaki, navy-blue and olive-drab Were 9XCl'1CIHQed for plaids and tweeds, Qaberdines and corduroys. At Hood the Tea Dances and Night Clubs moved in to wn to the F.S.K. '48 was first with Future Perfect followed by l Said Yes, '49 C5129 up with All Aboard and TNT, and '50 followed suit with The Pioneer. A World View In the spring of l947, by unanimous vote, Town Hall became a Major Organization on campus. Since that time it has done much to bring about an active interest in world affairs, and Hood has participated in many national and regional conferences. Concur- rent with a national trend there also rose an inte-rest in U.N. and the World View. Club Room Durmq the summer of 1947 the new art build 'viii -XR. :4 inq was constructed behind Shriner Hall ln addition to the art laboratory and class rooms there was a shop 1n the bas ment Mr. Fogle's staff moved their office. . . and the space in Alumnae Hall previously used by them was converted to a combination lounge-smoker-rec room. ?59S!'Z6iW.YA?lZ25d7X. .1 - That New Look And perhaps the thing that affected most of us more directly and more immediately than any other phase of post-war life was that New Look in women's fashions. The men complained, and we laughed at first. But we let down our hemsy ballerinas, 'waist pinchers and Gibson Girls came with a flourish, and now we love that NEW LOOK ' . Tho-se are the times really remem- bered . . . when We tt1'inJk of college days. o be really wellleducated, women today must not be content with books alone. There is so much more that ought to supplement formal knowledge. On the college campus, academic training, extra-curricular parti- cipation, and congeniality resulting from learning to live together may be united to bring out the best in each individual. Yet, even this is not enough, for no proqram, no matter how extensive or inclusive, is complete Without good times and relaxation. Weekends at Raudy, dinners in the kitchenette, the Prom and, Hop, coffee at the Snack Shop, parties at Fishin' Creek and High Nob, suppers at Mack's or Sheeley's, evenings at the Tivoli, dancing at the Hager House . . ., . . A warm auturixri sun, set in a oloudless sky, shone down on Hodson Theater where the Seniors came oft tirst best in the all-class Competition with their Last Round-up theme. The semi-formal dance, held that night in Coblentz Hall, brought to a satisfying conclusion another Campus Day. If Mrs. Serene Quynn CQ11- HIUS. All day Saturday scores of cars zoomed on and off campus, and l-lood suddenly became co-ed. That night Ctryina to look calml we ex- citedly ate dinner at the F.S.K., Peter Pan, or Ebert's. Then came the mad dash back to the dorm to squeeze twhy did l eat so muchll into our newest straplesses. t But, roomie, are yOu sure it will stay up? l There was the uS1lCil last minute rush when shoes and eveninq bCIQ'S were borrowed from roommates or the Qifl across the hall. The eternal question, Will he send flowers or won't he? was finally GHS- wered by the arrival of a qreen florist box. Triumphant and beautiful, we stepped intl? HATE our dates' arms at the long-awaited Prom. Low lights and smooth music Were blended with colorful, swirling skirts, some the new ballerina length, some sweeping the floor. Smiling juniors and seniors stepped through the blue- and-silver arch and down the ballroom in the traditional promenade. Midnight, we sighed, comes all too soon. But refreshments were Waiting at the night club in the I-'.S.K. Intimate groups chatted at tables while Nicky played familiar melodies at the piano. One-thirty- the Witching hour-and suddenly we were loack on the steps of the dorm, kissing our dates good- night. Before We knew it, another never-to-be forgotten Prom Date at Hood was over. P OLLY HARVEY CORINN E EDWARDS Extra Curricular Council e Council Extra Curricular Council is a student organization concerned chiefly with the coordination of all extra curricular activities on campus. lt consists of the presidents of all organizations and clubs, as well as the editors of all publica- tions, and thus represents that area of college life which we believe to be of the utmost importance in the development of the well-rounded individual. The Council has the power to approve or disapprove the organization or continua- tion of any club on campus and is further responsible to make a continuous study of all clubs with a view to their improvement. The aim of Extra Curricular Council is, mainly, to present to the student body an attractive, well-balanced extra curricular program, a program which pro- vides each individual an opportunity for the development of a variety of interests. Having been in existence only a little over four years, Extra Cur- ricular Council is a relatively young organization. Yet in that time, much has been accomplished which has aided in improving the general character of Hood's extracurricular program. Perhaps the most notable achievement this year has been the revision of the voting system with the use of the preferential vote on a trial basis. Last year the decision of the Council to make Town Hall a major organization was an important accomplishment. However, what has been done so far has been small compared to what the members feel can be accomplished in the future. They anticipate an even wider field in which the Council may function, a field in which the ideal of constant improvement of the extracurricular life of the student may be a con- stant guide.
