Our big sisters' reception to us brought us our first real pleasure, and we began to feel more as though we belonged at Hood. And then, when we were the first Freshman Class to win first prize for CUSHIIIIES on Campus Day, we looked abroad over the campus, and the song in our hearts was definitely You FLCFVI? lllfllllf for mr: I fu:f1.t 111411111 for you. Came Christmas, with its organ recital, vespers, and best of all, earolling, which was new for many of us, and impressive for all. 1930-'31 was the year of new rules versus old, and as Freshmen we did our part to make the social life at Hood a bit happier. VVhen we returned in September, we found ourselves 'fjust Sophomoresn with one hundred and fifty-six new people getting all the campus attention. At this point the wailing saxophone took up the melody of our song, but not for long, since we were determined not to become bridge-playing Sophomoresn at any cost. Braddock picnic was closely followed by Campus Day, in which we placed second. The Hop and its music was an event to be remembered and a point from which time was reckoned for the rest of the year. Everything was before the Hop, or after the Hop. May Day in our Sophomore year was another gala day, for the May Queen was one of our own big sisters, and one of the loveliest queens Hood has ever seen. VVe were the class to serenade her and her court with traditional May Day songs. Came Sports Dayg and came victory for the Sophomores, with 600 points, in-between class or not! On Class Day, to the strains of the laurel chain song we conducted our big' sisters to their exercises, and we carried the chain proudly, with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow. At Step Songs we joined our sister class in a song of farewell, which marked the end of two happy years together. And our Sophomore year ended. Now we are juniors. VVe have our own little sisters. VVe are the class on which so much depends and upon which so many duties fall. For the third time, we won second place in Campus Day. VVe know how very much there is ahead-greater academic obligations, new social pleasures and privileges-and we are looking forward with eagerness to them all. This year brings our first Prom, and the smoking' of the pipe of peace with the Seniors. Each year there is a separation from old friends and a binding with new, all in the name of Hood, who 'f7Ill71lL'd IM' l'llI'L' ff04'l,U,l',V of j'1'f1'1zd.thijr In u11rifv11ll1'1f buauly fo grofw. For them, the days of Fresh- man regulations and green and white arm bands are but memories of the past. Dur- ing their first year in college, the members of the Class of ,35 became acquainted with the words and music of our song, and now, as experienced members of the chorus, they, too, take up its familiar strains. Dame Fortune has ever been the protector of this lucky group. We1'e they not the first class to exchange the dull, conventional gymnastic garb of preceding classes for a much more attractive costume in their own class colors? ln their Campus Day costumes, dressed as four-leaf clovers, they looked like the personilication of good luck itself. This year their minds turned to mo1'e serious things, required courses and politics. No longer can the Sophomores moan and groan to the doleful lines of Physiology teaches us hafw tn keep fwell, It tells us just hofw to grofw, That fwc'rc all c'01l5lr'uClrd of iiny tells, fl hundred million or so. The paper was begun in IQI9-20 by the Athletic Association as a means of pro- moting interest in the gymnasium fund, but the first edition of the Blue 111111 Grey as the college newspaper was issued in the spring of 1921. The editorial board and the business managers are elected from the Junior and Senior Classes by the former staff, while the board of reporters is selected by competitive try-outs. The purpose of the paper is to keep the faculty, alumna, and students in touch with all college activities and with events beyond campus. It at- tempts to give voice to the opinion of the student body and the va- rious organizations. 92 '1 I-IIE I954 MURRXX, CIMPBLIL MILIFR, SIIIIFR, IIELISIIMUIT Frmcnrk Brwxmn HOFFMAI., Ramsar Pxnm CROWFII I.xM1Q0Ix,CIx1uII Bruxu bI1oII Mxumu, C L 'IRou1, BINIJFR LIVIILS, SOULI CKUYFIIL, Gkuxnrw Bm! This is the oldest of the col- lege publications, having been started in 1896 under the name of Lesbian Iferrzlrl, with Nlrs. Joseph H. Apple as first editor. The board of editors is elected by the preceding editorial staff, the editor-in-chief always being selected from the Senior Class. The Herald aims to maintain a high literary standard for the college and encourages the development of any literary ability which the students may possess in the creative writing of prose or poetry, as well as in the writing of literary criticism. 94 'TIIE I95 Ai WORTPIZNGTON HUDsoN E Bnxsow RAU DUTROW WILD ! 7 TOWN, MATHPNLY Rm-s, JAMES E COLE Herald EDITORI AL STAFF ELISARFTH Rrrs 33 Edllor nz Chwf LAURA A XVARD, PHD 4dfv1sory Edztor ASSOCIATE LITERARN EDITORS M EIIZABETH MA1uLNLx ,3 ARSINE Sc1xMAvoN1AL, 34, .EIIZABETH COLE, '34, BARBXRA w7IID 35 Evclmngc I dztar KAIIIRXL JAMLS, '33 111 Edzlm EII7ABLIlI Busch, 34 Proc rendu: EIIYABTTH Lox 33 Lois BIIJIIILJS Managfr MARIAN RAL, 33 lftlflltlllillly Mlllldgfl Mfxncrmu r Dumovs Dl5lfIbIlll07l Marlagaf VVILSON Hunsov T ypzsl IILUISL I'IOWARD 33 OUCI-ISTOIN 'I OVVNI 33 -' ,.f-'xml j . In- tense rivalry, genuine interest, and a real delight in the game made these trips to the Armory a daily occurrence. Not only were games sched- , uled for the Hrst teams of each class, but pro- visions were made so that all girls might par- I ticipate in the sport. The games played by the second and third teams created almost as much . interest and enthusiasm on the part of the stu- dent body as the games of the first teams. VIRGINIA LANE, Manager . The early games of the season proved quite exciting because it seemed almost impossible for one class to get very far ahead of any other. The Sophomores were defeated by the Freshmeng the Juniors were victorious over the Seniors, the Sophomores defeated the Seniors, who then defeated the Fresh- men. Finally, after many hard-fought battles, the championship game was played on M31'Ch I3 between the Juniors and Sophomores. The Juniors, as a result of their excellent team work throughout the game, claimed the title of class champions. The Annual Odd QIQ33-1935, and Even fI93.1.-I936D game was played on Nlarch IO with the result that the Evens were victorious. The climax of the season was staged on the night of lVIarch IS, when the well- matched Army and Navy teams played their annual game. Throughout the entire game, Army maintained the lead and the game ended with a score of 28-19 in favor of the Army. The game was followed by the informal spring dance of the Athletic Association-a happy end of a happy and enthusiastic season. Nglyy zflfllly POST. . . . Forward . . BAISH WILKINSON .
