If Stephen Mack and Hononegah, the foun- ders of our community, could visit us today, we are certain that they would feel very proud as they viewed the concrete evidence of the com- munity's faith in the future. ,QM- afiude f A , . ,J-.iS '., f ' V M., 1-' Y ,. S, , L-. u - - TRIP AND GRADUATION CLIMAX SENIOR YEAR - Remember the fall of 1953? VVe elected Larry XVhis- man. Terry Kocher. Donna Fisher. and Bob Combs as our president. vice-president. secretary. and treasurer. Mr. Helsing was selected to be the sponsor of our class of S4 students. The only source of income was our class dues. At the beginning of the second semester. Mr. Helsing left due to illness and Mr. Spielman then took over the task of guiding us. Returning for our sophmore year. we choose 21s class officers John Altenberg. president: Dick Reedy. yice-prcs- idcntg Ruthanne VVcnsel. secretary: and Donna Fisher. treasurer. VVe made a float for Homecoming, and we had two concessions, a turn-about dance. and class dues. The highlight of the year was our carnival. which added S250 to the treasury. We also had paper and scrap drives and I a class picnic. CLASS OFFICERS AND SPONSOR We started our junior year by electing Terry Kocher as president, Stanley Swenson as vice-president, Ruthanne Wensel as secretary, and Donna Fisher as treasurer. This was a big and busy year which began with a paper drive and a concession and dance during the football season. Our junior play, Down To Earth , was presented on February 2 and 3. Then came the preparation for our prom, Moonlight Memories , and the Junior-Senior Banquet which was held in the Martha Washin ton Room at the - S VVagon Wheel on May 8. Though there were many expenses that year, our treasury was in good shape for the big year ahead, This was it! Our senior year at H. C. H. S. Mr. Spielman left the teaching profession and Mr. Hicks became our sponsor. We re-elected Terry Kocher, Ruthanne Wensel, and Donna Fisher to their offices and selected Larry Whisman as our vice-president. Then we made and sold Indian headbands for Homecoming and also sponsored the Homecoming concession and dance. The sale of note cards and our dues, noon lunches, the candy machine, a bake sale, and car washes all increased our treasuryg as did the play Tish , a three-act cornedy presented on April 11 and 12. Then came the Senior Trip and Graduation, our goal for the past four years. The pep rally really started rolling during the burning of the Harvard dummyg and then, continuing their enthusiasm, the students joined hands and snaked to Main Street. The last pep session was in the gym on Friday after- noon. Everyone was in high spirits and each person knew just exactly where they would be at 7:15 that evening. Although the picture seemed dark at the half, the skit for victory presented by the Spanish Class and the marching maneuvers of the band KING JOHN helped to retain our spirit as did the appearance of the lovely feminine members of the court. The Hornets defeated us by the score of 18 to 6, but we knew that our Indians had done their best. The gymnasium, decorated in our school colors with all the players names printed on pennants along the walls, was the scene for the annual Homecoming Dance. On the goal posts were megaphones with the cheerleaders names. Lewis Dalvit and his orchestra provided the musical background for the evening, which began with the crowning of Beverly Lowe and John Alten- berg as King and Queen of 1956. -,--' FF . fffffxln FRONT ROW E Holmes S Bottlmer E Mattmgly SECOND ROW R Wensel D F1sher S Jung P Bender L Hohnes S Kelsey J Shade J Hopkms THIRD ROW B Grenz J Wlshop H Swenson G Bland M Peters L Wheelock J Chappell M Benkovlch W Wh1te L Thorsen P Thorsen B Aylesworth STANDING B Bollle K Porter R Holllday D Dav1s Z-:ma!7 In the spr1ng of 1956 for the frrst tlme 1n the h1StOI'y of our school the band went from d1S trlct competltlon to compete m the state fmals at De Kalb and rated second place 1n the class B competltxon Thls sprlng they were agarn judged superlor 1n the d1str1ct contest at Forreston and advanced to the state flnals at Bradley Un1vers1ty 1n Peorla on May 4 The 45 pxece band journeyed to Northwest ern Umverslty m October to partlclpate Ln one of the country s largest mass band formatlons They performed durmg the half t1me ceremo mes at one of Northwesterns football games It vsas an unforgettable experlence for them Th1S year the band agaln sold delxclous choc olate candy bars fllled to the brlm w1th toasted almonds and they also sponsored concessxons at dances The Band Parents Wllllngly vol unteered thelr servlces and helped to earn the monej Wh1Ch was for unlforms muslc mstru ments and trax ellng expenses Every year these melody masters g1V6 a splendld performance at then' Chrlstmas and sprmg concerts and th1s year was no excep t1on Thelr muslc was also enjoyed at all home football and basketball games We feel they truly deserve the recognxtxon they ve re celved 'lm ----'--4 f V n n 1-vt . 2 I 2 ' ff I , nf , H, . 1 , -gpg , - . l . -.. Beloit --- ----- 0 LOST 3 TIED 1 BOB TERRY JOHN BOB COACH KELSEY'S COMMENTS This squad gave Hononegah her first win- ning season since 1953. Although key players were lost during the season, as the year pro- gressed the team improved, especially in hold- ing down the scoring of the opponents. The team found itself in the Mt. Morris game, where, trailing 20 to 0 at the half, the Indians put on the greatest rally I have ever seen to win 27 to 20. In the two losses in league play, to Harlem and Harvard, the boys came back strong in the last half to make what looked like routs turn into exciting games. All eleven seniors who won major letters will be missed next season. However, with 14 re- turning junior letter winners and with support from the best Frosh-Soph squad in the history of Hononegah, the Indians should be a fine team again next year. uv' JIM jfk JOHN ROGER RODNEY ALBERT BILL JERRY fx - u Q hr ' .li 1 . .4 ..- SEATED B Gann B Buchs R Gable M Kelley B Cronk C Manley SECOND ROW J Altenberg J E111s R Porter T Kocher, E Belken B Allaben B Carter THIRD ROW Coach Kelsey, T Lackey B Bo111e, J Buchs J Rollette J Kocher L Nlckless Coach Baumgartner BACK ROW D Lowe T Domke L VVh1sman B Hoover J Hayter D E1Ck A Burk1ns B Mutuner wma Zellma MAJOR LETTER AWARDS John Altenberg CCaptJ B111 Allaben Ed Belkcn Albert Burkms J ohn Hayter Terry Kocher Bob Mutlmer LaVerne Nlxckless Rodney Porter J 1m Rollettg Larry Wh1sman B111 Bolhe Jerry Buchs Dlck Elck Roger Gable Bob Hoox er MlCkGy Kelley Tom Lackey Bob Gann MINOR LETTER AWARDS Bob Buchs Bernard C uter B b Cronk Tom Dornk Jun Kocher Du1L11 Long Cr 11 'XI 111115 Chff Blggdft Olgrj G xrx Bond Ulgrj Ru 5911 Kothe l'Vl rj Roger Gable runs mto .1 stumblmg block -, , , ,A ' f' . - - 'gl'-- ' ,- -. . . . , , . , . , . , . , . . .
