JEANETTE RAYMENT When this quiet member of the class speaks up, she knows what she's talking about, so we sit up and notice. CAROL ROTH Carol's sweet voice cheers everyone up, she nev- er lacks friends and entertainment. OWEN ROTH Owen has been with us for the better part of two years and we think he's a nice guy who works hard to help. ED SHARP Our president, and a guy who knows a lot of answers on a lot of subjects. You won't find many finer personal- ities than Ed. JACK SHARP Jack, our Junior president, was one of our main forces in football and track. RAY STULTZ Ray might be small but there's nothing small a- bout his brain power. Ray made a good record in basket- ball, too. ROY SWANSON Another quiet member who is in having a good time as well as getting down to work. DAVID WAUGH Dave seems to call the right signals both in school and in football. An easy-going fellow who takes everything in his stride. ' CHARLES WRIGHT If you see anyone all dressed up in a Marine or baseball suit, you can bet its Chuck. PATTY LOU WRIGHT This dark-haired little girl seems to be more interested in horses than in boys. The fellows disre- gard that, for everyone likes her. RALPH WRIGHT Ralph seems to have a little trouble with his cars, but he doesn't let that bother him. He plays the trumpet, too, and does a good job of it. Teachers' Institute gave us a chance to have a paper drive to help our financial status. There was much banter as to who did the most work--the boys or the girls-- but all was forgotten when we received our reward. Ah! That check was just the right medicine for our treasury. Q 17. Attention! Defeated unbeaten Beloit Sophomore team 20-6. 21. Senior proofs arrive! The results were as good as can be expected, considering the subjects. Another highlight of the day was getting out of school to journey to Leloit to gee HHenry VN. Could this have improved our French?? 25. After ll years of obscurity, we showed Harlem what a championship football team looks like. With our strong defensive line and fast backfield, Harlem had no chance to score. Thus we made the largest score, rolling up thirty points for our sixth victory. Outstanding on defense were John Gessner and Jim Williams. 28. An assembly program was given by Captain Hook, who told of his experiences while living in Alaska for 35 years. Various things he showed us were: parkas, bear skins, and totem poles. Feeling a little chilly? ' Q- or-g ',,- . 50. To create Homecoming enthusiasm in Rockton,we made a banner which we put across Main Street. We ran into trouble with Coach's car, which Ed Sharp will gladlyconflrm. 31. WThis is station H.C.H.S., broadcasting fromHonone- gah High School of Rockton, Illinois.n This started ourbigf gest pep session of the year, with Mr. Miller and Mr. Hicks as masters of ceremonies. To enthuse our team, the faculty put on a very fine skit. Immediately following, a snake dance was held through the downtown district, which was dec- orated by the merchants. It wrs wonderful having their sup- port for this memorable homecoming, fought this year withpo- werful St. Thomas of Rockford. H.C.H.S. lead 6-O at the half. St. Thomas raced for a touchdown in the third quarter out with a quick touchdown from the Tommies 45 yard line in the fourth quarter, Jack Sharp carried our Warriors to fame. Howard Krupke, left tackle, played a fine game. .A record crowd turned out to cheer our undefeated Indians on to this 12-7 victory over the Tommies. During the dance, Betty Nelson was crowned the Fo- otball Queen of '48, by the Football Captain Ed Sharp. The pass from Jack Sharp to Chuck Barker, who then ran 45 yards, clicked for the only score of the game. Jim Williams then 'saved the dayn by intercepting a pass on our own U18n yard line, preventing a Polo score. Dave Ellis, fullback, played the best game of his career. This team's record will be a goal for future H.C.H.S. teams. 15 Whether we know it or not, we all have five aims in life! belief in God, true friends, love, truth, happiness. Thus, Nelson Colby, an ex-convict who spent his life in work houses, prisons, and reform schools, opened his talk to the students and faculty. 14 Better watch out, boys!! Sadie Hawkins day dance. 18 The Juniors are now officially upper c1assmen after ordering their rings today. But we felt a little sad as we chose our cards and announcements. 21 It was wonderful! The Sophomores really showed us a bit of their school spirit tonight when they gave the Fresh- man class one of the best initiations in years. Paul Matte- son made a very fine master of ceremonies. 25 The championship football team was the product of hard work and expert guidance on the part of Coach Kelsey combined with the cooperation of the boys. He deserves plen- ty of credit for this Ccrackl team. The boys, also feeling this way, gave a party for him and presented him with a key case and billfold set. Tonight two lucky people went home from the F.F.A. Tur- key Raffle with turkeys under their arms. This was only one of the many activities sponsored by this ambitious group. To guide them through the year they chose the following of- ficers, Howard Krupke, President, Clinton Finley, Vice Pres- identg Stanton Phelps, Secretaryg and Jack Sharp, Treasurer. Dale Bainbridge was selected to report all the F.F.A. news, and Bill Hopkins is the watch-dog. 27 Lxtra! Hononegah vs Durand 45-51. The first game and victory of the season! DECEMBER 1 Our Senior pictures arrive! fIs that goed?D 3 We were measured for our caps and gowns today. 9 .It was nip and tuck, but Polo went home witha basket- ball victory of 51-50. The boys were really in there fight- ing! 12 A basket boys! They did it! With a score of 55-54 we defeated Rockford East Jr. Varsity! 16 Six Seniors were chosen as members of the honorary' Brain and Brawn Society, which was created to encourage athletics and scholastic achievement. The students must qualify in at least one of the fol- lowing to become a member: valedictorian, breaking a track record, good citizenship, an achievement in G. A. A., or a scholastic average of 92 for sg years. We are proud of our members who are: Bill Hopkins and Jack Sharp for athletics, Burge Pearson for good citizen- ship, Jim Williams for scholarship, Norma Conklin and Lyn Bigelow for G. A. A. achievement. 19 Our alumni played a 'successful game here tonight with a score of 51-50. Our Christmas party was a wonderful success. Fbr the program the Freshmen presented a medley of Christmas songs, the Sophs gave a good play, but the Juniors stole the show with different acts by members of the class. An encore was given by Martha Smith and Ed Manley. We found aseriou view- point for a change, and gave a play on racism. Santa Claus soon made his appearance, falthough Ed Sharp had a little trouble and found two Senior girls rather heavyl. The over- all organization of this program was left to the G.A.A. We then left for two weeks' vacation after wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. 25 Merry Christmas! 26-51 Still having a wonderful vacation! 45 IT'S BEEN A GREAT SEASON!n, SAYS COACH. ' It was a great honor and pleasure to work with the fine group of boys that represented Hononegah on the football field this season. I have never seen a group of boys work together as well as our team did this year. Outweighed in every game, often by as much as 25 pounds per man, the team made up in speed and fight what they lacked in size. In ten years of coaching, I have never seen boys tackle harder than we did this year. Our prospects in basketball are at a low ebb, with only one experienced varsity man back from last year. On paper we do not stand to win many gamesg but if the boys pitch in like they did in football, we may surprise some of our oppo- nents. I would certainly like to beat Harlem in basketball once.. 7 J ,KX4 Coach Kels A BASKET! A BASKET! A BASKET, BOYS! As we all left our Halma materu, every one looked slightly tearful as the nClass of 48N said good-by to Hononegah. 8 A little lonesome for H.C.H.S., we visited the vacated school only to find Phylis completing the Sr. re- cords and the many tasks which must be finished by the end of school. Our tale's unfolded. Gee, those years sure went by fast! Seemed as though we'd just but started, Now we're on our own at last. One balmy May day, we began to reminisce about our four years here at Hononegah. We remembered that four years ago, back in '44, we invaded Hononegah in great number, 86 to be exact. We were soon in the swing of things, aided by the Sophs, who initiated us on November 16, 1944. To guide us further, we selected Dave Ellis, President: Reuben Clark, Vice president, and Charles Wright, Secretary-Treasurer.Un- der Don Hicks' sponsorship, we did ourselves proud. Coming back in '45, we chose Ray Stultz, President 3 Bill Hopkins, Vice Presidentg and Pete Gardner, Secretary- Treasurer. Mr. Hicks was still helping to hold us to the straight and narrow. Of course, we thoroughly enjoyed the job of putting the nGreeniesn in their place. We just couldn't seem to stay away, so in the fall of '46, we chose Jack Sharp, Presidentg Betty Nelson, Vice President, and Doris McLean, Secretary-Treasurer. This year we really outdid ourselves as far as activities were con- cerned. We covered the gym with tulips and windmills to make a wonderful evening of dancing at our Junior Prom. Of course, we can't forget the grand Jr.-Sr. Banquet at the Wagon Whee1.And remember nLife with Willien! At last we 4lstood gazing at the top rung of our school careers. Determined to make this year unforgettable, we elected Ed Sharp, President, Betty Nelson, Vice President, and Ray Stultz, Secretary-Treasurer. We found this year to be busy, but full of fun with excitement, too, Though we're glad to have reached the top, graduation, we're sorry to have to give up our place to the incoming Seniors and say nGood-bye, Hononegahnl ' 85 June 4, .1958 Dear Diary: Startled into consciousness this morning by oneof those wake-up radio programs, I heard Crooner Jim Williams accom- panied by the famous name band, nRalph Wright's Screwballsu, with Dave Ellis, announcer and commedian, filling in. Bounc- ing into the shower, I was somewhat dismayed at the three whole drips of water which gushed forth. Still half asleep, I stumbled to the phone and tried vainly to get some service from the operator, Jeanne Lane. After qettigg in touch with Pearson's Perfection Piping, I was promise. prompt plumbing service. After breakfast, I was carried down to the street level by Jeanette Rayment's Elevator Service. First on my list of duties for the day was to mail my correspondence of uTen Easy Lessons on How to Run the Governmentn, to Congressman llen. Next was to make an appointment for some other time with Doc Hardy, Dentist. As he was busy, his nurse, Norma Conklin, recorded the date of my appointment. To complete final arrangements for a fishing trip, I went to H. C. H. S. for a conference with uDocN Oldenburg. Passing by the athletic field, I saw Coach Jack Sharp work- ing with his boys on the baseball diamond. Raymond Stultz, nProfn of Math, was acting as umpire of the game. As I walked in the office, I was cheerfully greeted by Doris Mc- Lean, the office secretary. During the course of our busi- ness discussion, HDocn informed me that Tom Hadie had died from, overwork on his book, uLife Beneath the Tombstone? Wishing to pay final respects, I hurried over to Gleasman's funeral parlor, where I was graciously received by the Rev. Owen Roth. . After departing from the establishment, I decided to replenish my supply of energy at Kemp's Kooking Kettle. While I was eating my modest lunch, whom should I see at the next table but the noted architect, Glen Gable, who had been in Alaska selling pre-fab houses to the Eskimos. He, I pre- sume, was visiting his brother Louis, who was acting as the chief cook and bottle washer of the establishment. I en- joyed very much the floor show, starring Betty Peterson, the noted torch singer. 86 driving instructor for Just as I was leaving the restaurant, I was startled by a loud crash. On investigating, I discovered that thechief teen-agers, Roy Swanson, had rammed into a stop sign. By Patrolman Wilbur Moist his report and issuing traffic court. In the the time I had arrived on the scene, was recording the necessary data for a summons to appear in Judge Waugh's meantime, John Gessner, newspaper re- porter and photographer, was busy phoning in details ofthe accident to harilyn long, editor of the HSand Irairie Sun.u When the excitement and confusion had subsided,I no- ticed among the Spectators, Electrical Engineer, Ld Sharp, who outlined to me his project for indirect lighting of Macktown Lall Dark, the home field of the famous pitcher, Chuck Uright. As it was drawing near to the time of a fashion show, which I had planned to attend, I hopped into a nearby cab and was somewhat astonished to find Clinton Finley as my chauffeur. After giving him directions, I settled back to enjoy my ride. Suddenly realizing that another of myerrands was to obtain an airplane reservation, I stopped at the airport- to attend to the matter. After getting a ticket from the agent, Dorothy Goldy, I turned to leave and bumped into the airline hostess,Virgin1a Olds. haking hurried apologies, I rushed back to'my waiting cab and proceeded to the fashion show. I was received very graciously by Joyce Grant and was ushered into the presence of Pat Mripht, fashion it was my misfortune to tune in designer, and Pat Nelson, hairdresser, who were also attendin, the style and originality of the ELPSOI1. On my way home from the Betty Nelson's Super Service ihile preparing supper, show. I was impressed bv the costume modeled by Doris Dick- fashion show, I stopped in .at Food hart, for some groceries. on Llaine Cummings' show, UThe Supper Time FrolicU,sponsored by Carol Roth's Rabbit Raising nanch. Slightly unnerved, I started what I thought to be a nice quiet book, nkround the Zorld on Twenty-nine Centsu. I had not noticed the authors, who were the Misses Bigelow and Bailey, but decidedit was not the quiet book it had seemed to be. Now completely un- nerved, I raced over to Dill Hopkins, psychiatrist, who as- sured me that I was quite sane.
