For years the high school curriculum has been based on training for college. Wm know of course, that only a small percent really go to college and in as much as their formal education ends with high school, some account should be taken of that in regard to the subjects offered. Consequently, our curriculum has been divided into what, for lack of a better term, we call a college preparatory course. The subjects taken in each course are as follows: Starred subjects are required. He must have lots to do because he carries a large stack of books see on the folio that he carries, that his nanw is Mr Loomis Oh! yes, we have heard of him H is the principal. From a conversation with one of the students, we learn that he teaches classes in English, Civics and Economics, he has been t Hononegah since 1929 when he came here as princip He served in the French and American armies during thc World War, he attended Beloit College and the Univ rsity of Wisconsin Now at fifteen minutes after elcven, we are getting rather hungry, and as the odor of food is coming from somewhere, we search for it in the cooking laboratory. lho cooking classes serve the cafeteria at noon. The instructor, we learn is Miss Loser, a graduate of Wesleyan, at Bloom ington, Illinois, who, along with the cooling classes has charge of the sewing classes, Dinner Club G A A and is the Sophomore Class Adviser After dinner we decided to visit a mathema tics class Here we find such a class, and 'w recognize the teacher as the coach. Our thoughts are affirmed as we find that Mr Walker teaches all the Math classes, and is coach for football, basketball, and track teams. He was graduated from Carthage College at Carthage, Illinois This year the seniors elected him as their class spons or, as did last year's seniors. Let's do some exploring and find out what this building is, out behind the school. It is cold on the way out - but it looks as though it were inhabited, so they will probably have some heat out there. As we approach we hear noises of machinery. Yes, it must be the shop! But where is the instructor? Certainly these boys must have some guiding hand. Here he comes! We learn from this Heasy-to-get-acquainted-withn man that his name is Mr. Root - a graduate of State Teach- ers College at Platteville, Wisconsin. He teaches Mechanical Drawing, Manual Training, and Indust- rial Geography and is the Freshman Class Sponsor. ll 'SK Eg? We have worth-while books in all fields of reading--history, fiction, biography, poetry, drama, and others. Everyone knows the value of fiction. It affords us pleasure and if we take time to notice, we will find that quite often there is interwoven an interesting back- ground of history. HAlice of Old Vencennes' is a good example of this kind of literature. Almost everyone likes poetry of some kind--even Shake- spoare's dramas, when you become good enough to understand them, are interesting. Biography is an essential part of reading, because when you know and understand the author's moods, you can more readily understand his works. And then, of course we alw ys rave new magazines on the shelves to give us current news I think that orce you have found out what a genuine Jewel any good library is, you will spend a good deal of your spare time reading JUST TIME TO GET THE BUS 'Here I'll hold your coat while you tie yo shoes You'll have to watch that clock more olo sely Can't you see this silver and blue Rec Speedwagon bus coming down the road9U 'Yes but I'm so sleepy that I want to borr w your shoulder for a rest.' We were initiated in the gym by the Sophomores. The Sopho- more girls won an unique tug-of-war with four big tires. The Freshie boys defeated the Sophomore boys. In our Freshman year we chose the following officers: President, John Moore, Vice President Robert Grisbyg Secretary Treasurer, Morgan Coon- radt. At the beginning of the second semester when John Moore became a Sophomore, Robert Grisby was made the President, and Warren Harnish was elected Vice President. Mr. Walker was chosen as our class advisor. Our Sophomore year Mr. Root was chosen as class advisor and the officers were: President, Eldon Holmes, Vice President Robert Hillemeyer, Secre tary Treasurer, Dorothy Sh ard On May 25, 1956 we had our prom, which was a big success. The gym decorations were carried out with the Southern Plantation idea. Our Junior Senior banquet was given on June 5, at the Blarney Stone near Beloit. On that occasion the color scheme was silver and blue. Our Junior yean Miss Struebing was chosen as class advisor and the off icers were President, Milton Hamborg, Vice Pres ident, Phyllis Wright,Secretary Treasurer, George Reynolds It was necessary to elect Dorothy Sheard as President to fill the place of Milton Hamborg, who had dropped school The Seniors ended their school career with a good name by picking as their play Tomboy It turned out to be a success with a clever act put on by a tomboyish girl It seems as if we are sea minded because we chose a maritime surrounding for our trip we went to Benton Harbor Michigan, on a lake cruise The year was climaxed by the banquet given by the Juniors to the Seniors as a last token of their af 16 O U 1 1 C u . : . . . . -. . . . Our men, this year, under the tutorage of Hononegah's mathematician, Professor Onlin Walker, who tells them that the shortest distance between the two Goal-lines is a straight line, we find quite inexperienced. As the nucleus for a fighting purple and gold, we find three letter men returning: nRedn Armstrong, fullback Cvoted all conference this yearj, Ralph Lang- rehr, guard fvoted second team all conference guard, and Byron Telfair, at end. Coach Walker had to prepare a team for the opening account at Marengo and after watching his offspring for a week, began to shape up a starting eleven At ends were Wright and Telfair taclle were Bezhak and Bell, at guards, Sproul and Langrehr, Neuman alternating with Sproul, and Bob White playing in the Center of the line In the backfield, Coach started Henderson at left half, Liddle at right half, Waite at full back and Cap tain 'Red' Armstrong as quarter back The season, although by no means too successful, was a triumph many times. The opening encounter at Marengo was lost by a 6 to O margin, it was a non conference affair The following week at Fort Atkinson we were downed prettily by a score of 26 to O n another non conference game The next week ve hit our stride by taking Clinton to town, 40 to 6, but were to be subdued humbly by the opening conference game with Harlem, when at the erd of their scalping and war whooping, we found ourselves on the small end of a 25 to 6 score The next attraction was Lanark And as revenge is sweet, we took upon our shoulders the will to conquer W did 2l t O Too bad, Lanark! Winnebago said we ere a Jinx ard kept it so by Jinxing them 7 to 6 Boy you almost had to gasp for air while the fellows were 26 F KA. L M I . - - C S . . . rr U , . ,- . . - . - ' I I C . . . A dreary rain Cjust what Coach Walker and his boys had been praying forj spoiled our plans for a parade. The Cooking Club braved the storm and served a chili dinner to their alumni at noon. Our band was scheduled to make its initial appearance at two o'clock on Homecoming Day. They had practiced their 'formations for several weeks and the drum Majors, Sally and Rhoda Nelson, had new costumes for the occasion. Needless to say, everyone was disappointed when it rained and spoiled this part of the program but the rain did not spoil the music. In fact, the stirring strains of the band did much to put us in a fighting mood and beyond a shadow of a doubt it was worth getting muddy to see that game' At two thirty we all went to the field old, young, yes, even a bedraggled little pup The team 'was playing against Pecatonica, a strong team, and we had to win Sure enough, at the end of the game the score was 20 to O, so our hopes were not in vain Jubilantly we came to the dance The gym was decorated in purple and gold, our school colors Gold footballs hung from a ceiling of purple rib bon and 'Welcome Grads in electz c lights made pleasant memories glow in the hearts of the old er grads Music was furnished by Jean Clark and her or chestra Everyone was in a d.nc1ng mOOd,bSD6C ially the football squad we took time out around ele en o'clock to throw confetti and serpentine at one another After that it seemed easier to dance, and we even noticed our nb chelor on the floor Ne continued our dancing until midnight, and tired but happy good nights brought the end to a perfect Homecoming , . . . - ...- l l . . - O . o I . . . 1 . ii . . . .- o - . - 0 ' E' I 1 - O , A I V . . . . v ' 2. The reason for that, is this-wwith the old plan the people engaged in either of the groups missed the same classes 'week after week, going only four days each week for the classes that happened to fall on the first or eighth hour. But with the new plan they miss each class or Study Hall only once in six or eight weeks.
