-Us g Q04 America stands almost alone today in a world dark with fear and aggression. The American way of life is approaching a critical period of test and attack. If our chance of survival rest upon our people, their ability, their productivity, their dedication to America and their intelligent choice of the right, then the task of the schools is clear. American education must constantly increase in its realism. we must prepare our boys and girls to be economically competent, civi- cally responsible and socially adequate. We must emphasize the Wlife is real, life is earnestn philosophy, in which one acquires patterns of success by learning about standards, by accepting responsibility and by stressing habits of efforts, ambition and achievement. As the traditional curriculum slowly gives way to more democratic practices in our classrooms, learning possibilities inherent in the field of student activities must not be neglected. The student is of- ten more concerned about one phase or the total of these school ac- tivities than about what happens in a single classroom. Our student activity program can be strengthened to become the hub around which all practice in democratic living is centered. Q Sincere congratulations to the Tom-Tom Staff for a job well done. E.
