Real- izing this, we put forth our best effort to create a theme which would apply to every student at Honaker High School. Our thinking was pointed in a particular direction, however. We sought to find a way for our 2 OPENING PROLOGUE theme to apply to eighth grade students as well as seniors. Throughout our high school years, we are constantly given new directions and paths to fol- low. As underclassmen we were always Finding Our Way matur- ing both physically and mentally to meet the requirements set for us. As seniors, we have found our way through high school, to doors opening to the responsibil- ities of adulthood with new di- rections and new beginnings. We have worked, we have learned, we have matured — but most of all — we have en- joyed Finding Our Way! TABLE OF CONTENTS Student life Homecoming 6 Orange you ... ? AZ Seniors —- A7. With school starting in September, little time was allowed for the prep- arations concerning Homecoming. Homecoming week was filled with various activities. The SCA worked hard to provide a variety of activi- ties for each day of the week. Fri- day, September 27, was the open- ing to an exciting weekend. For the first time in many years, students were allowed to work and deco- rate club floats during school time, under the supervision of club spon- sors. Given this priviledge the stu- dents responded by being very ac- tive and cooperative. Floats were brought onto the driving range and most of the day Friday was spent decorating. Although the weather- man kept predicting rain, Friday proved to be a partly sunny and warm day. That evening at 5:30, Honaker was full of anxious people to view the parade. There was a judging of the floats before the parade. The Junior Class won Most Spirited, SCA won Queen Award, and the FBLA won Most Unusual Award. Hundreds of devoted fans filled the Fuller Field Stadium to watch the mighty Tigers. At the beginning of the game the Honaker Tiger Band put on an excel- lent performance. Also, Shelia McFarlane crowned Linda Miller Homecoming Queen. Saturday night the cafeteria was full of life as the Homecoming Dance took place from 7:00-11:00 p.m. This Homecom- ing will be remembered by all as a success. Are they straight? Juanita Price struggles to place the letters for the float on straight. Pi Door decorations. Mrs. Hughes’ class shows their talent by making a poster for the door decoration contest. Can you do this? Mrs. Johnson shows Todd Yates how to fold the napkins for the floats. HOMECOMING 7 On September 27, 1985, Linda Mill- er, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller, was crowned Homecoming Queen. She was escorted by Jon Humphries, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Callhan. Linda was one of the four girls nominated for Home- coming Queen by the Senior class. 4984 Homecoming Queen Shelia McFarlane relinquishes her title as Mr. David Musick crowns Linda. 8 HOMECOMING HOMECOMING 1985 Terri Hart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hart, represented the senior class as an attendant. She was es- corted by Chris Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Taylor. Leslie Dotson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Dotson, was selected as one of the Homecoming Attendants for the Junior class. She was escorted by Curt Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Cook. Tammy Kiser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kiser was selected as the other Homecoming Attendant for the Junior Class. She was escort- ed by Jeff Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Miller. DOING IT WITH STYLE Jennifer Simerly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otis Simerly, was the soph- omore representative for Home- coming Attendant. She was escort- ed by Jeff Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Miller. Becki Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller, was chosen by the freshman class as Homecoming At- tendant. She was escorted by Rod Siate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Slate. Sonya Fletcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Fletcher, and Steve Compton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sher- man Compton, were chosen as Ju- nior Varsity Sweethearts. Ava Hart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hart, represented the eighth grade class as Homecoming Atten- dant. She was escorted by Keith Compton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Compton. Vickie Vance, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Vance, was chosen Maid of Honor for the 1985 Homecoming Court. She was escorted by Larry McGlothin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mem- phis McGlofhin. SADIE HAWKINS WEEK Each year the Art Club sponsors a Sadie Hawkins Dance in order to raise money for additional art mate- rials. This year the club decided to sponsor a funfilled week ending with the traditional Friday night dance. Each day students were asked to participate in dress-ups or fun activi- ties. The week included a back- wards day, purple and shades day, security day, sweat suit day and Lil’ Abner and Daisy Mae dress-up day. Six couples representing various grade levels, were nominated the previous week and voting took place all week long. At a penny a vote, the student body seemed to enjoy not only the voting process but the daily tallies. It’s not everyday that a sophomore girl gets the opportunity to start a modeling career. Kim Musick is a 16 year old 5 foot 10 inch Honaker High student. Kim started modeling in the eighth grade for Rasnic Models in Kingsport. As long as Kim can remember, she wanted to pursue modeling and a career in fashion design. Kim doesn‘t see modeling as her only career goal. After graduation, she plans to attend Virginia Intermont College and major in fashion merchandising. Last summer she spent a whirlwind week in New York City filed with photoshoots, makeovers, and sight- seeing. Kim also attended a modeling conven- tion in Birmingham, Alabama, where she won several awards. Some of her interests include sports, particularly basketball, and cheerlead- ing. Modeling is a great way for teens to learn the responsibility of a career, of Course, Mo- deling isn’t as easy as it looks; it’s a lot of hard work and discipline. AWARDS 139 440 BAND The beat goes on. In early Au- gust of 1985, the 56 member H.H.S. Band began practice for the upcoming marching sea- son. Under the direction of Mr. Ted Pobst, and Chris Clark, drum major, the band began twelve weeks of hard work starting with 8th grade band week. The first full week of August, the eighth graders began practice on marching | skills, and playing their instruments while marching. Two weeks later, the rest of the band joined the eighth graders for band week. From 9:00 a.m, un- til 4:00 p.m. the band worked each day on their new music and drills. On August 30, four days before the first day of school, the band traveled to Haysi, Virginia for the first football game, where they performed two songs and one drill at halftime. As each week passed the band worked harder and harder on their field show. On September 28 the band trav- eled to Chilhowie, Virginia to participate in the Chilhowie Apple Festival. The band re- ceived a division Ill award. The division Ill inspired the band to work harder and develop their field show even more. Three weeks later, on October 49, the band traveled to Inde- pendence, Virginia and per- formed in the Mountain Foliage festival. The three weeks of hard work paid off and the band improved their rating to a high division Il award. The 1985 Marching season, al- though not as successful as some of the past seasons, proved to be an “Improving Season’’. The band played at the football games and gave an added spirit to the crowd. They performed three songs with drills, “Wayfaring Strang- er’’, “God Bless the USA”, and “Shadowland”, plus a solo per- cussion break, during halftime at each football game. In 1985 the band proved that hard work and strong dedication is all it takes to make the beat go on!
