FOREWORD Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once called the record of man’s upward climb “footprints on the sands of time.” “The Seniors of 1958 leave this record of their footprints at Honaker High School. They hope that in the far dim future these records will serve to make old friendships and associations real again. Today they hope to inspire each of you “to make his life sublime.” DEDICATION “Lives of great men all reminds us.” ‘To the four teachers who have been in our school for the greatest number of years — to the four teachers whose classes have never been “crips” ... To the four teachers whose instruction, guidance, and devotion have helped us to make significant “footprints on the sands of time” — Miss Lucy Robinson, ’37, math; Mr. E. N. The The 4-H Club is a national organization supervised by Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Virginia; it is directed locally by county extension agents. The purpose of the club is stated in its pledge: “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living for my club, my community, and my country.’ The members of the Honaker 4-H Club are, left to right: Eldridge Busic, presi- dent; Lorine Barnhart, Barbara Hale, Faye Harrison, Brenda Barrett, Mary Jane Ray, Sylvia Fields, Carolyn Combs, Nancy Rickman, Loretta Matney, Julia Mullins, Brenda Honaker, Mary Beth Martin, Patsy Harrington, Nancy Barrett, Norma colors of the flag are green, gold, and pur- ple on a background of white, which repre- sents purity of thought and purpose. The emblem is a circle, Symbolic of the never ending process of learning. In the center of the circle is a torch representing light, know1]- edge and life - the God-given abilities and potentalities of each individual child. Sur- rounding the torch is a background of green which means youth and hope. Stars repre- sent service. The number of stars is sym- bolic of the four-fold purpose of the school: the development of the physical, the mental, the social, and the moral characteristics of the child. The hand holding the torch repre- sents the endurance, patience, and strength of the teachers Who guide and counsel the child. The gold is symbolic of honor, loyalty, and persistence. The golden pool from which the hand extends represents all the con- tributing factors to the education of the child, namely: the state and local govern- ment, the influence of the home and church, the school administration and other agencies that contribute to the physical well being of youth. The circle is bound by two bands, the first one of gold which re-emphasizes the per- sistence and loyalty of the pupil who remains in school. The outer band of purple represents rank and honor. The highest ranking person is the one who remains in school for twelve years and receives a diploma, the certifi- cation of his meeting all requirements necessary for gradua- tion from a four year high school, Faye Combs, Helen Farmer, Carolyn Garrison, Alicia Walker, Frances Helton, Ann Boyd, sillie Sue Grace, Mary Joyce Hubbard, Della Gay Hess, Nancy Smith, Nadine Miller, Jana McNulty, Kddie Busic, James Hale, Charles Ferguson, Lanny Honaker, Ronnie Williams, Illis Boyd, Leroy Breedlove, Wal- ter Lockhart, Harry Smith, secretary and treasurer; Paul Chambers, Bill Smith, Clyde Colley, Danny Hess, Sammy Honaker, James Harris, Eddie Stovall, Wilburn White, Rus- sell Herndon, Dickie Honaker, Roger Ray, Jack Whitt, Jim Fife, Ronald Wilson, Johnny VanDyke, Wayne Plaster, vice president; Glen Owens.
