' has ■p- SENIOR GLASS PROPHECY It was the coldest night since the winter of 1954-55. A fourteen inch snow covered the ground; the highways were a solid sheet of ice; my n ew atomic furnace was on the blink, and there was nothing for me to do ex- cept to crawl in bed to keep from freezing. Suddenly a huge snowflake landed on the collar of my new mink coat. It began to take human form and I recognized Houston Honaker, the President of the Class of ’55. I was not surprised that Houston was a great scientist since he had studied for many years under Einstein. An- other flake with a halo was floating silently down. The shining face of the Reverend Mr. Bobby Ray, pastor of St. John’s Cathedral, appeared. He said that he was on his way to Putnam to officiate at the wedding of Jimmie Fletcher and Nancy Sailing. Jimmie had been elected as U. S. Representative to the U.N. and was taking Nancy to Geneva with him. Bobby told me that he understood that Peggy Dye Ray, a now famous singer at the Metropolitan Opera House, was soloist for the wedding. She was flying from New York with the bridesmaids, Evelyn Wilson and Peggy Barrett, who were executive secretaries to Columbus Hess, Gen- eral of the U. S. Forces in Japan and Billie Wells, a New York Broker, respectively. Jimmy Stinson landed on my cuff with a metallic clink and I re- membered that he was the new president of the First National Bank in Honaker. He told me that Harry Campbell had been promoted to the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond and was taking along his two most efficient cashiers, Rosemary Price and Pearlie Perkins. The next snowflake had the faint aroma of a familiar anesthetic. It was the famous surgeon, Mike Osborne, who was on his way to the Mayo Clinic to assist Dr. Loretta Wyatt in an operation on Larry Bates, who had been in an accident when he attempted to reach the moon in a rocket ship. The pilot, Estel Cook, and co-stewardesses, Wanda Stinson and Betty Hubbard were not seriously injured. Was I seeing flowers? No, it was a rosy snowflake changing into ( Patty Stinson on her way to assist the newly elected Governor of Vir- ginia, Polly Lark, and Lieutenant Governor Charlotte Whited, with their interior decorating. t •r , Li! Whirling and whizzing and skipping along as if she were too happy f-j stop was Linda Miller wearing her “Miss America’’ ribbons and crown. iihe wa ' s, flying to Paris to reign over a fashion show, featuring models Billie ' ' |th Whited and Linda Buskill, who were modeling creations by ' Mfh moug designer, Phyllis Salotti. SENIOR GLASS PROPHECY The snow began falling faster and faster. It was almost blinding in its intensity. There was James Rasnake, a foreign correspondent of the New York Times, with pictures of Hurley Musick and Dewey Fuller in their palatial homes in Brazil where they had retired after striking oil on Drill Mountain. Nadine Hale was working with the 4-H Clubs in Switzerland. Mar- garet Rutherford was on a Mediterranean Cruise after having written a best seller. Beulah Strouth was coaching the undefeated U. S. Profes- sional Red-Head Basketball Team. Working with the U. S. Forces in Korea were Opal Honaker and Alverda Miller. Jackie Hall was the first woman to be elected as one of the judges in the World Court. Gloria Akers and Shelby Cox were in the Library of Congress. Jeannette Hughes was Speaker of the House of Representatives. Betty Dye, Peggy Rose, and Beulah VanDyke were living in Bermuda after having made a fortune in the perfume business by inventing a perfume called “a sure- fire-man-catcher.” Secretaries in the U.N. Secretariat were Evelyn Lock- hart and Annice Miller. One of our new State Senators was Bill Gregory. After recording her own hit tune, “Why I Love the North,” Mildred Dye was on a world tour. Bonnie Lockhart was the first person to play duets with Liberace. Ulis Hess now held the lightweight boxing title. Bobbie Jean Call Ray had been chosen the American mother of the year. Magdeline Stump was a food expert of the Honaker Choice Foods Company. Sammy Miller was a mining expert in Alaska. Carl Steel, a world famous geogolist, had been called to search for uranium on Honaker’s Water Tank Hill. Doc Stovall, representing the United States in the Western Hemi- sphere Baseball Team, had chartered Clyde Bostic’s submarine to take his family of nine to Hong Kong, where he was playing the East. Sue Harris, dietician for the Western team, and Jeanette Johnson, World Sports Correspondent, were also making the trip. Lloyd Gilley and Gary Miller had invented a chair plane which they used to carry Jimmie Taylor, Russell County’s most prosperous farmer, to Charlottesville where he was leaving his baby girl in care of the fa- mous pediatrician, Peggy Runyon. Merciful Heavens ! A snowflake as big as a house was comings to- ward me. I tried to move out of its way and landed on the omjny electric blanket which must have slid off as soon as I fell asleep Being an old maid and having no one to comfort me, I crawled back in bed. ' As I tucked the blanket securely around me, I started wishing for arrdbheiii ' - vision of my classmates in a sunny climate.
