Honaker Herald MARCH 16, 1955 Wayne Ball and G. E. Compton Visit Mars in Rocket After seven years re- search and hard work at Raleigh, N. C„ a rock- et was developed which Hew to Mars. Wayne Ball and G. E. Compton, Scientist and Explorer , who made the Might, say that in a few years Mars may be just another Honeymoon Resort. Billie Honaker is visit- ing Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fuller, (she was form- erly Katie Lou Miller) for a short time before her fifth visit to Reno to get a divorce. Emma Jackson is spending the winter in Florida with her friend, Virginia Ball, who is painting landscapes. Myrtle Peck is teach- ing school at Daw Uni- versity. This is her tenth year in succession. Hassel Crabtree, Sen- ator from Virginia, is vacationing in China with his wife, Maxie. Zeola F o 1 e n o and Frank Brown were mar- ried the fifteenth at the Methodist Church. The couple are honeymoon- ing in Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Har- mon will return home from their trip abroad soon. Mrs. Harmon is the former Helen Grace. They were accompanied by their twins. Tee and Hee. Georgia Fuller has opened a school for women who like to keep their figure. Harold Crabtree Hnds evidence to break up the Muggs Markin thugs and bank robbers. With the help of his secretary, Dorothy Campbell, he sent the Markin gang to prison. Anna Pearl Smith ' s record shop has Joan Wysor’s latest hit re- cording, “A Parision Song. It has already sold 20,000,000 copies of music and records. Truladane Hale is sponsoring plans for a hospital at Swords Creek. Miss Hale is a graduate of Charlottes- ville Nursing School and Head Nurse at the Clinch Valley Clinic. J. C. Jessee is now drawing his own cartoon for N. Y. Times. The name of this cartoon is “Honey Bee. Carl Newberry ' s store “The Charmer” just re- cevied a new shipment of evening gowns de- signed by Mary Frances Chambers. Darlia Musick, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Kent Musick, and Kirby, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Smith, have been chosen Mascots by the Seniors of 1955. Lawrence T a y 1 or, basketball coach at Yale, will be speaker at a formal banquet given by the businessmen of Honaker. Received his M. A. from Duke. Madeline White has just opened a beauty parlor on Main St. She has discovered a solu- tion to make hair long- er. Jo Marion Jackson is manicurist and Har- riet Dye gives facials. Maj. Powell Deel and Cen. Garland Taylor are trying to buy land from Giles Musick, who owns land all over Southwest Virginia. If they suc- ceed, the land will be used for an army camp. A teacher ' s banquet was held Friday, 14th. Ruth Jackson, American History teacher was mistress of ceremonies. Raymond Hess, Princi- pal, made a rule that no pupil shall play hookey more than once a week. Goldie Peck expects to have 99 in her graduat- ing class this year. A new Home Ec. Cottage was discussed by Hazel Robinette who has taught Home Ec. for the last 9 years at H. H. S. The Faculty drank a toast to Betty Taylor for her coaching of the H. H. S. basketball girls. Doris Ann Wright and Florence Robinette have opened a picture studio on Second Street. Miss Wright is photographer, while Miss Robinette is developer. Vera Mullins returned from her Hight to Egypt where she Knished her latest novel, “Egyptian Glow.” Alma Honaker has be- come the dark-eyed sen- sation in “Wine, women and Song, opposite Van Johnson. The Hess Quartette is heard every Saturday night on the Grand Ole Opry. Mary Frances, Lou, Mahala, and Ethel Mae are the four song- birds. Mike S t e e 1 e’s new model agency in N. Y. has just about put Mr. Powers out of business. His most popular models are Jean Hughes, Leona Sutherland, N a d y n e Musick, and Marie Christian. Hewlitt Wilson is now playing the Lone Rang- er over CBS. Tonto is played by Carl Hess. Brady Smith has his own show each day at 1:00— “Fun With A Fid- dle.” Billy Joe Johnson is planning to charter bus lines between Honaker and Swords Creek. Taxi Service will also be available. Mattie Sharp is visit- ing nurse for Russell County. Margaret Harris is now dentist at Honaker. Her office is in the Acme building.
