Honaker Herald MARCH 16, 1955 Wayne Ball and G. E. Compton Visit Mars in Rocket After seven years re- search and hard work at Raleigh, N. C„ a rock- et was developed which Hew to Mars. Wayne Ball and G. E. Compton, Scientist and Explorer , who made the Might, say that in a few years Mars may be just another Honeymoon Resort. Billie Honaker is visit- ing Mr. and Mrs. Tom Fuller, (she was form- erly Katie Lou Miller) for a short time before her fifth visit to Reno to get a divorce. Emma Jackson is spending the winter in Florida with her friend, Virginia Ball, who is painting landscapes. Myrtle Peck is teach- ing school at Daw Uni- versity. This is her tenth year in succession. Hassel Crabtree, Sen- ator from Virginia, is vacationing in China with his wife, Maxie. Zeola F o 1 e n o and Frank Brown were mar- ried the fifteenth at the Methodist Church. The couple are honeymoon- ing in Mexico. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Har- mon will return home from their trip abroad soon. Mrs. Harmon is the former Helen Grace. They were accompanied by their twins. Tee and Hee. Georgia Fuller has opened a school for women who like to keep their figure. Harold Crabtree Hnds evidence to break up the Muggs Markin thugs and bank robbers. With the help of his secretary, Dorothy Campbell, he sent the Markin gang to prison. Anna Pearl Smith ' s record shop has Joan Wysor’s latest hit re- cording, “A Parision Song. It has already sold 20,000,000 copies of music and records. Truladane Hale is sponsoring plans for a hospital at Swords Creek. Miss Hale is a graduate of Charlottes- ville Nursing School and Head Nurse at the Clinch Valley Clinic. J. C. Jessee is now drawing his own cartoon for N. Y. Times. The name of this cartoon is “Honey Bee. Carl Newberry ' s store “The Charmer” just re- cevied a new shipment of evening gowns de- signed by Mary Frances Chambers. Darlia Musick, daugh- ter of Mr. and Mrs. Kent Musick, and Kirby, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Smith, have been chosen Mascots by the Seniors of 1955. Lawrence T a y 1 or, basketball coach at Yale, will be speaker at a formal banquet given by the businessmen of Honaker. Received his M. A. from Duke. Madeline White has just opened a beauty parlor on Main St. She has discovered a solu- tion to make hair long- er. Jo Marion Jackson is manicurist and Har- riet Dye gives facials. Maj. Powell Deel and Cen. Garland Taylor are trying to buy land from Giles Musick, who owns land all over Southwest Virginia. If they suc- ceed, the land will be used for an army camp. A teacher ' s banquet was held Friday, 14th. Ruth Jackson, American History teacher was mistress of ceremonies. Raymond Hess, Princi- pal, made a rule that no pupil shall play hookey more than once a week. Goldie Peck expects to have 99 in her graduat- ing class this year. A new Home Ec. Cottage was discussed by Hazel Robinette who has taught Home Ec. for the last 9 years at H. H. S. The Faculty drank a toast to Betty Taylor for her coaching of the H. H. S. basketball girls. Doris Ann Wright and Florence Robinette have opened a picture studio on Second Street. Miss Wright is photographer, while Miss Robinette is developer. Vera Mullins returned from her Hight to Egypt where she Knished her latest novel, “Egyptian Glow.” Alma Honaker has be- come the dark-eyed sen- sation in “Wine, women and Song, opposite Van Johnson. The Hess Quartette is heard every Saturday night on the Grand Ole Opry. Mary Frances, Lou, Mahala, and Ethel Mae are the four song- birds. Mike S t e e 1 e’s new model agency in N. Y. has just about put Mr. Powers out of business. His most popular models are Jean Hughes, Leona Sutherland, N a d y n e Musick, and Marie Christian. Hewlitt Wilson is now playing the Lone Rang- er over CBS. Tonto is played by Carl Hess. Brady Smith has his own show each day at 1:00— “Fun With A Fid- dle.” Billy Joe Johnson is planning to charter bus lines between Honaker and Swords Creek. Taxi Service will also be available. Mattie Sharp is visit- ing nurse for Russell County. Margaret Harris is now dentist at Honaker. Her office is in the Acme building.

1948 CLASS WILL We, the Seniors of Honaker High School, Russell County, State of Virginia, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament, and hereby revoke all wills and codicils by us at any time heretofore made. To Mr. Baldwin our Principal, Miss Fuller our sponsor, and other faculty members, who have borne with us in all our hours of trials and tribulations, we leave our deepest gratitude, and best wishes for the many years left before them that they might keep dear old H. H. S. the same old familiar place To the Juniors we leave the honorary place that we are now leaving, and best wishes that they may make Honaker High School a better place. Our personal wislies are that their last days will be as happy as ours. Virginia Ball wills her slim figure to Delphia McNulty. Wayne Ball wills his position on the basketball team to Eddie Matney. Frank Brown wills his ability to be a pest and nuisance to Joe Hubbard. Dorothy Campbell bequeaths her natural beauty to Peggy Jackson. G. E. Compton bequeaths his shorthand ability to all lazy boys. Mary Chambers gives her height to Dorothy Mullins. Marie Christian wills her blonde hair to Eula Hubbard. Hasel Crabtree wills his interest in Sophomore girls to some lucky boy. Harold Crabtree gives his ability to carry on meetings to all juniors. Powell Deel wills his army rank to Harry Wilson. Harriet Dye leaves her position as Secretary of the Senior Class to some unlucky Junior. Zeola Foleno gives her long hair to Miss Brown. Helen Grace wills her freckles to Ruth Brown. Truladane Hale wills her position as Editor-in-Chief of the Annual to some poor sucker. Margaret Harris wills her giggles to all sour faced girls. Georgia Fuller wills her position as captain of the basketball team to Sylvia Bartee. Carl Hess bequeaths his favor with Mr. Robinson to Virgil Brewster. Raymond Hess wills his harmonica to Kenneth Sword. Mary Francis Hess gives her perfect figure to Jean Ann Baldwin. Ethel Mae Hess leaves her boy friends to Dorothy Steele. Lou Hess leaves her good grades to Janice Counts. Mahala Hess wills her inattentiveness in class to Betty Miller. Alma Honaker gives her short black hair to Gertrude Plaster. Jean Hughes wills her dignified appearance to Ruth Corns. Billie Honaker wills her shortness to all Juniors who are tall. Emma Jackson leaves her chubbiness to Mildred Ann Ball. Jo Marion Jackson wills her affection for Georgia Fuller to Claude Mason. Ruth Jackson gives her favor with the teachers to those who need it. J. C. Jessee bequeaths his artistic ability to Sue Runyon. Billy Joe Johnson wills his nickname “Goat” to Mr. Couch. Katy Lou Miller leaves her diamond to some lucky junior. Vera Mullins wills her flirting ability to Faye Compton. Nadyne Musick wills her position as Treasurer of the Senior Class to the wealthiest Junior. Carl Newberry wants to give his black curly hair to Jack Johnson. Myrtle Peck wills her cooperative spirit to Mary Ruth Musick. Goldie Peck, after finishing with her beautiful teeth, wills them to Mrs. Miller, if and when she netds them. Florence Robinette gives her timidity to Edna Brown. Mattie Sharp wills her slow easy manner to Joan Stinson. Anna Pearl Smith wills her typing ability to Bob Mason. Brady Smith wills his good looks and popularity to any one who needs them. Eula Starnes wills her basketball points to Carol Honaker. Mike Steele gives his false teeth to all toothless Juniors. Leona Sutherland leaves her curly hair and vacant seat to Ruth Sutherland. Betty Taylor leaves her laziness and forgetfulness to Mae Stump. Garland Taylor bequeaths his anxiety about student government to Manley Miller. Lawrence Taylor leaves his basketball suit to Bill Gillispie. Giles Musick wills his privilege of coming from Cleveland High to Honaker High, to J. B. Combs. Hewlitt Wilson wills his dimples to James Clark. Madeline White wills her long black hair to Miss Hart. Doris Wright gives her attentiveness in class to Joy Jackson. Joan Wysor leaves her position as P. T. A. Queen to Willie Sue Starnes. Billie Jo Yates wills her characteristic twist to Willie Kate Combs.
