Mrs. Canada's two speech classes this year have been one of the largest and the best that Hominy High School has had in a long while. By the second month of the second semester of school, three speech trophies and ten speech medals had been won at contest, in addition to the many honors that were received by students who were sent to the finals in a great number of events in more than one conference or contest. The year's season of speech activities started with the production of two plays, Make Room for Rodney , and Battle of the Budget. About this time, rehearsals were started for the contest play, The Return of Chaundra , which concerned a missionary's activities in the wilds of India. Not long after the production business was cleared away, the speech class attended a contest at Shawnee to observe the contest there in preparation for the North State Conference contest at Fairfax. It was at the Fairfax con- test that Horniny walked away with almost all of the events including the play, which was judged the best at the contest. However, honors for the Return of Chaundra did not end here, for at the Edmond contest this play qualified for state finals and was judged the best in its class, a Class of many entries. All in all, speech activities this year have been proved quite successful: however without the guidance of a very skillful instructor, such success would not have been possible. fQC'0'Q 'JLF3 ch W 9099 uJu0 000 ...ish su. , Contest Play Cast Mrs- Canada PFOUCUY Barbara Newhouse practicing 66 diSP15YiI'lQ the UOPHIBS- her speech in class. The students of Hominy High always look forward to a beautiful and inspirational Nativity scene in the morning directed by Mrs., Canada. These were familiar words on the cold mornings of early rehearsals--but practice makes perfect and so the Hominy High School Band went about it's way in preparing for not only a busy year but a very successful one. A proud day came to the band early in the year when on October l4, they brought back honors from the Northeastern District Marching Contest. A Superior and Division I rating was awarded the Buck Band for their performance in the morning marching contest, and in the afternoon parade com- petition. H. H. S. Bandsmen won the first place trophy of Class C. Part of their busy schedule, which took them over many miles, was participating in the Band Day activities at the University of Arkansas, the University of Tulsa, marching in the Homecoming parade at OSU, a concert at the County Fair, Frontier Day Parade, three local parades, all out-of-town parades and home football games, and pep rallies. Representatives from Hominy Band to the All-State Band Clinic at OSU were Mary Io Riddle, Gene Balentine, Glenda Nichols, and Billy Starks. Activities to come after this writing are the Band Festival at Skiatcok, Contest at Shidler, District Concert Contest in Tulsa, Pawnee Parade, and Tri-State Festival in Enid. Officers for the band this year were Gary Westover, President: Steven Smith, Vice-President: Carol Waldon, Secretary: and Gene Balentine, Drill-Master. ,U A ... . .
