L.- Celebraling another one of those yearly events fnamed birthdaysl, that some ofus dread, English teacher Dale Dalton shares his cake with his class. A SILVER PLATTER As Homestead celebrates its 25th year, we are forced to put this quarter-century into perspective. Twenty five years is a short time in terms ofthe history ofmankind, but its a very long time when someone is referring to a piece ofcheese that's been left in the refrigerator for that amount oftime. But twenty five years is a respectable amount oftime for a school to be open. We can reflect on how much luckier we are now compared to years past. Not only has the academic side of Homestead changed, but the social aspect ofhigh school has vastly improved. For instance, today we have our choice ofseveral fast food places in the area, as well as various bakeries and bagel houses nearby. But twenty five years ago, where did students have to turn to instead of the cafeteria? Well, there was Burger Pit, but that's about it. Things weren't much better in terms ofthe dress code at Homestead either. Remember seeing those pictures ofmicro-miniskirts that girls wore in the '60s? Well, wearing one of those at school could be punishable by being sent home to change or, worse yet, a conference with your parents about your weak moral fiber. Ifa girl did get away with wearing a miniskirt, however, it usually resulted in a definite improvement in the girl's grade in a particular class, if she had a male teacher. Things weren't so great for the guys. Hair length was short or else, until the late '6Os. Long hair Chair below the earsl was a sure sign ofa hippie communist drug addict, and the administration wasn't especially fond ofthose types. Today, students at Homestead enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere in the classroom as well. Being in Silicon Valley, we complain about our parents having high expectations ofus, resulting in extreme stress. We have it easy. Students who went to Homestead in its early years had to compete with Steve Wozniak in the classroom. Can you imagine your mother saying, Little Stevie Wozniak is getting an A in Advanced Calculus. Why are you having trouble in Trigonometry? Someday, however, we'll be able to say to our kids, What are complaining about? I had to go to school with When Homestead celebrates its 50th year, and 100th anniversary, the 25th year won't be lost in the shuffle. The students will be remembered for their uniqueness during The Silver Celebration. A Silver Celebration!!!

f 'Vt X .YV if Life of the party hat is going on here? A party? Well, a celebration actually. A SILVER celebration. Homestead's having a birthday and you know what that means, there'll be balloons, streamers, confetti and all the makings of a party with class. And you are invited, because what really gives a party character are the guests who attend it. Each one is special and important, and so is what they do with their lives. In looking at the lives of the guests this year, we'll find two thousand different people doing two thousand different things. Our activities outside of school are just as im- 'ff portant to us as what we do ' y 4. W - 'c when we're at school. High 1 ., school is a time for each of us to -gf ' develop our own style, to work hard for the future and to have fun doing it. Student Life is e about all of those elements, and 'r everything else that makes us the life of Homestead's party! ig V. 2 ' I 1 . ug 5 ff 1' '- D Q Q O Q ei 0 o Q O Q D O D
