These words could always be heard as the band marched onto the field to perform a perfected halftime show. Through rain mud and mess the band rehearses two hours a day, five days a week during football season. The highstepping Homestead High School marching band had a great year under the direction of Mr. Du Wayne Donithorne. The 96 member band was honored when Moffet Field asked them to perform at one of their football games. They were also invited to various band days. The band continues on after football season, they bread down into a pep band and a concert band. The concert band performs a pops concert and a spring concert. The choral department this year was again directed by Mr. john Pleasant. The Chamber Singers consisting of twenty-five members added john McCrea on the String Bass to their group. They started Christmas season giving a concert here at school and a repeated performance at the Valley Church. Once again the Chambers Singers made a caroling trip to San Fran- cisco. Caroling from a cable car and singing at Ghirar- delli Square, Mark Hopkins, and Fremont Hotels made it a very successful trip. In February the choirs participated in the Pop's Concert. The choirs also visit- ed the junior high schools in the area, the All-District Choral Festival, Exchange Choir Festival, and partici- pated in the State Musical Festival. They also parti- cipated in the Musical Melo-Drama held here. In the spring ths choral department put on their first com- plete concert. Once again the choirs thank Neil Rut- man, a junior, for accompanying the choirs on the piano. 3 Q ,, 3 .Q- E I P OO C fi E . TO Z E 1 f 66 3 '99 'E S gf -i 15255. 'Nt it The Streets of New York was a version of Bouci- cault's classic about an evil banker and a very pure and deprived heroine. To cover his embez- 2,lements, the banker steals a ship captain's for- tune, leaving the captain's daughter and widow to brave the cruel world as best they can. The equal- ly destitute hero is forced to become engaged to the banker's villainous daughter. Then comes the foreclosure by the heartless bankerg the splendid- ly nostalgic Christmas scene, where the poor huddle in the snow, and the heroine laments the loss of her jobg and finally the big fire, the reversal of fortunes, and the triumph of virtue. Unlike anything ever presented on the Homestead stage before, The Streets of New York was presented not with a student cast nor is it presented as a fac- ulty play. Instead, both students and the faculty combined their efforts here to present a living example of cooperative hands extended as a bridge across the generation gap - a cast of stu- dent faculty. -l 3' CD CD f-o- -1 CD FD f-r cn -+-1 KD O -1 77' 1 if hang C Ex fl Christine DeBergh Chaville, France I like very much the United States of America because it is a new country, where you find many activities, sports, jobs. The houses are particularly different - large, and the weather is nice. I like Homestead, its social activities, and clubs. I like also you can choose the courses that you want. All the teachers are very friendly and there is not so much discipline in the classes. The teachers are most strict in France and you only go to school to learn, I am very happy to live in America where I have been very welcome and where everybody is your friend. I' F Brigette Riither Grosinkneten, Germany I come from Grosinkneten, a small town in Northwest Germany, about 85 miles southwest from Hamburg. Here in California I en- joy living with the Delling family in Sunnyvale, a real sunny town with the long, warm, California summer I like so much. At school I enjoy especially the great choice of courses. And of course I am mainly taking the ones which are not available in my German school. German students have almost no choice in courses at all. My school has only 300-400 students. So especially the first day at school here was very confusing, and I was pretty much intimidat- ed by the number of students and buildings. Everybody seemed 'to know where to go except me. The lockers were at first a prob- lem too. It took me always at least ten times before I could open them, But fortunately things have changed. Now I feel myself at home and comfortable. I think this year will be a great experience for me, owing to all the kindness and helpfulness I received. 72 May Parrild Fredinsberg, Denmark The differences I have noticed are in the school. With the rela- tionship between teachers and students, the relationship is more like a kind of friendship here. In Denmark a teacher is a teacher, you can talk to them but in a different way. The school system is different too, Here people are very dependent on a car. In Den- mark you have to be 18 before you can drive a car. But you can drive a motorbike when you are 16. The weather here is different. This year in America will not only contain a great deal of experi- ences, but it will be like a year of summer. Here you can choose almost anything you want to, In Denmark it is required to take math, German, English, typing, gym, history, religion, geography, and some other things. Homestead High is much larger than the average school in Denmark. Besides, I am being treated like a queen here. .4- 30-14 W t nw -. s ,- asv ,W i., , .,' 1 fi'l 1, Fx! if H I . xt Open to any student interested in foreign nations and cultures, Homestead's International Relations Club has spent a valuable year increasing the understanding of foreign lands. This year, under the guidance of Mrs. Lyon and president Kathy Graham, IRC spear-headed the annual UNICEF trick or treat and collected almost 5400. They packed books from the district and sent them to the Asia Foundation and VISTA. They also sponsored the Sixth Annual International Dinner, sold UNICEF Christmas cards, and sent 'IO students to participate as Nepal in the Model United Nations at the University of California, Berkeley. Andria Wilson Heusenstamm, Germany Hello! My name is Andria Wilson, l'm from Germany, where, I live in a little town near Frankfurt. When I arrived in the Unifedf States in August, my impressions were, I think, the same as evegryg tourist who has come here for the first time. The dimensions seemed so much larger. I just loved the landscape with all the beautiful plants, and enjoyed the long summer. In Germanyflvfi had a cliche picture of the American teenagers. I though girls wore lots of makeup and tight pants, and the boys were tall foot- ball fans, had a big smile, and a crew cut. I was quite relieved to find that this is not always so. I really enjoy being here and hope a lot of people get the lucky chance to be foreign exchange stu- dents, and that these people are as lucky as I am to come to a place like this, , 73 A U t L.. .-n. Q -I L Ll- 4 This year the foreign lan- guage clubs combined to form one group. For its first year the club was involved in numerous activities. Home- stead students were able to enjoy the food and tradi- tional dress from other Countries when members sponsored International week and the International Dinner. Wontons, tatos, and chariot wheel cookies caught the interest of hun- gry onlookers. During the second semester students from Latin America came to study at Homestead and the club helped them to get acquainted and feel at ease. Mrs. Letson as advisor, helped the club through a successful year. With the aide of IRC, Homestead was privi- ledged to send ten dele- gates to the Model United Nations held in Sacre- mento. The head dele- gate, Kathie Graham, lead the goup in getting reso- lutions passed and com- peting for high recogni- tion. Homestead repre- sented Nepal, a member of the security council, which provided the group with added interest in their studies. Members of, the delegations were also able to meet students from other high schools, as social activities were also a part of their three dayexperience. 'TI 'CP C Qi 4. '- Ferrentinos. rl' Drama Club is one of ths most active clubs at Homestead. This year, they had guest speakers come and talk to the members about different ways that other countries produce plays, and they visited the American Conserva- tory Theater in San Francisco. The 5 biggest event of the year was going to Hollywood during Labor Day weekend to visit major movie studios and the popular Disneyland. Modern Dance is for girls who are interested in learning different tech- niques involving modern dances. It also gives them opportunities to devel- op the ability to create their own dances. The club performed many successful routines at the Mothers Tea held in the spring. They made up their own dances and some of the dance movements. To make Modern Dance more interesting and exciting, guest teachers attended their meet- ings and presented master lessons to the girls. 4 r E V get-ifgfgfslllt Homestead students certainly appre- ciated the work of the Epitaph staff. Interest in journalism increased and enough students were enrolled in the class to form two periods, As a result more students contributed their ideas, giving articles in the paper a wide spec- trum of interests. Writers for the Epi- taph organized the paper into a news page, an editorial page, a page forfea- tures, and sports coverage. ln addition, Homestead readers enjoyed regular features such as Campus Quotes and Pollak-ticks. The staff also tried some- thing new in the form of a special communications issue written in a magazine format, Another new aspect of the newspaper was the advisor, Mrs. Sally Phelps. Along with editor leff White, Mrs. Phelps co-ordinated the staff to produce another year of high quality Epitaph issues. .C CU . :' L.Ll EDITOR ADVISOR SENIORS ACTIVITIES CLASSES SPORTS FACULTY ADS: PH OTO-COORD PHOTOGRAPHERS STAFF lan Phillips Mrs. A. V.'s finished the 1969 football season with a 3-4-2 record. Before the first game, injuries plagued the team - and the result was that no more than 21 players suited-up for any one game. The first game of the year was probably the most memorable. While 11 players took the field at Santa Clara for the kick-off, 5 reserves watched from the sidelines. The team numbered 16 and won 16-0. Eighteen players stepped on the bus to meet 2nd place Awalt and lead 20-0 late in the 3rd quarter, but 2 key injuries and fatigue helped the Spartan's powerful ground attack to compile 20 points to tie the game. Coaches Bob McCorkle and Dave Klovdahl felt the season was a success because their small squad had to play to peak of their ability in each game. As the season progressed every member of the team improved on his blocking, tackling, agility, and running skills. The freshman football season got off to a good start with a 14-12 victory over Monte Vista. Injuries, absences, and mistakes plagued the team the next four games. Paul Giannaccaro, the first team all S.C.V.A.L. halfback, had a great game gaining 201 yards in 39 carries to defeat Wilcox 16-0. The last two games against the undefeated teams of Peterson and Cu- pertino demonstrated the team's pride and their enthusiasm.
