FOREIG L GLIAGE Foreign language classes emphasizing culture as well as grammar and vocabulary directed students towarld a more meaningful study of languages. Ancient and contemporary histories enlivened foreign languages and made them more relative to the student. Slides and movies were shown by teachers for a better understand- ing of the atmosphere of each particular country. Advanced language and humanities conducted a study of philosophies. However, the foreign language courses focused mainly toward comprehension of and speaking ability in the languages. An audio-visual program was followed to improve upon the writing, speaking, reading, and listening of the students. It provided students with an opportunity to relate mechanics to speaking the language. For further enrichment with others of similar interests, students were able to join any of the four foreign language clubs at Homestead. . J 4- f . ,3. TLIDIE The Social Studies department used every available reference to create a meaningful study of his- tory and political thought for Homestead students. Based on the success of last year's pro- gram, students were encouraged to look for reasons behind events. A variety of sources were the basis for a broader outlook on specific problems. The American Civilization class, in its second year, initiated a new approach to the study of economics. More than half of the department spent considerable time devel- oping a new Social Studies curric- ulum. What was done here may become a pattern for other schools in the district and the state. 2 Mr. Mullhair American Civ. I K Mr. Hemphill U.S. Government, World History Mr. Langford American Civ.
