Q, 1, 'lv ,--av l 4970 Offense with Oomph! It was a very special year for Varsity Water Polo-a champion year, the very first one. From relative obscurity six years ago, Homestead has risen to be ranked as the sixth best high school team in the nation. From a group of enthusiastic freshmen, a well-balanced squad of swimmers and ball-handlers has developed. A well disciplined offense and a tight defense enabled the team to end its season with an 8-l record. In the most impressive game of the season, Homestead dethroned Santa Clara 7-6 in overtime play, and became SCVAL co-champions with Santa Clara and Buchser. To top off the season, Coach Hepner guided the team to second place in the Northern California Invitational Tournament. Steve McKinzie, Dave Kirby, Bill Simpkins, Mike Wargo, Steve Gentes, John Gebers, and Mike Jordan were named to All-League Teams. ME il. Coach Hepner Painful Efforts Triple Threat
