C and D Basketball The I967 D Basketball team had a very successful season as they finished 3rd in the league with 8 wins and 3 losses. Chris Vitale, most outstanding player, established a new school D scoring record for one season. Helping him defensively, Dave Egusa and Greg Fish did a fine job. The team averaged 34 pts. a game while they held opponents to an average of 28.5 pts. Team managers. from l. to r.: Scott Jenkins. Gary Chronet, Rick Moore. Although the C basketball team was hand- icapped by inexperience, they finished the year with a fine performance of 6 wins and 5 losses. Pacing the team on scoring, senior Melvin Ho set new C scoring records for points made in a single game C26pts.j and points for the season C l96pts.J Working with him in the defense, Steve Recht and Jim Meyers were expecially outstanding. Also, a great deal of credit is to be given Gary Lester and Bill Sutton. Coach Mathieson and C strategy. lO2

Thoman National Record Holders: Dave Sanford, Jack Christianson, Mike Ferguson Tom Brassell, and Paul Gaesser l 'H' For the year of I967, the Varsity Cross Country team captured what seemed to be an endless number of titles. The five-man ten-mile team of Dave Sanford, Jack Christianson. Mike Ferguson. Tom Brassell, and Paul Gaesser set a new national high school record of 4804. quite an outstanding achievement. Seizing the SCVAL championship, the Varsity team ended the season with a record of I2 wins, no losses and an overall record of 62 wins, 2 losses. Not restricting competition to the area. Homestead's Cross Country team won the Region II meet at Vasona Park. They also placed Ind in the Central Coast Section and ranked 2nd in the nation. Homestead's Varsity team included Dave Sanford, Jack Christianson, Mike Ferguson. Steve Flynn. and Paul Gaesser in the SCVAL All-league team. Additional hon- ors went to Dave Sanford and Jack Christianson, making the lst team in All-northern California. Mike Ferguson represented the 2nd team while Paul Gaesser ranked with honorable mention. The team elected Dave Sanford. having the fastest senior time in the nation, as most valuable player and scholar-athlete.
