To the Class of 1964: You are about to leave Homestead for other fields of endeavor. We hope that you are well prepared to meet the challenges which you will be forced to answer. Please remember to be proud and unbending if honest failure should come your way, and to be gentle and humble in your success. Stand tall and straight in the face of adver- sity, but remember to have compassion on those who fall. Realize that you must master yourself before you attempt to master others. Seek not the way of luxury and comfort, but face the stimulation of challenge and difficult goals. Reach towards the future, but never neglect the past with its lessons of wisdomg approach all problems and decisions with an open mind and a willingness to look at all the facts and all sides of the question. As you leave Homestead our congratulations and best wishes are extended to you. We have enjoyed working with you, and we sincerely hope that you will come back to see us from time to time. Many of our dreams and aspirations for the future are depending on you. Your strength and wisdom will carry us through. Dru. M. V. fu. Lawww Digaow 4 661wHQlP L. Several meetings were held during the summer to de- cide on activities for the 1963-'64 school year. In ad- dition to sponsoring a mixer and the Christmas dance, the council also sponsored a car wash and a powder puff football game to raise money for the Highlander memo- rial. 'I7 Class of '67 jeff Sekely Tom Haering Mary Schwandt Chris Dannenfelser Alt: Tim Dunar Mary Krautkramer To most students, Fall signifies the start of another year of schoolg but most Highlanders thought in more specific terms. To Cathie Chryzan it meant a return to old friends with tales of Chile to tell them. To the boys on the team it meant football season. To the freshmen it me ant a new start in a new school. Fall also meant more firsts for Homestead: the first debate team was formed and proved a success, the honor study hall was given a try, and a powder-puff football game was played. To all, Fall meant getting into the true Highlander swing of things. Items ranging from to chickens can be purchased there, and neighbors and friends come to chat as well as to buy. Student strikes are quite common in Chile. These students are marching around the main plaza in Temuco. The building in the back- ground is a movie theater. This last summer I was an AFS'er in Temuco, Chile, and it was the most valuable experience of my life. Names on a map are now actual places to me: stores, school, chuches, parks, and most important--people. My Chilean family, the Figueroas, helped me obtain a good cross- sectional view of the country. They proved to me that the basic ingredient of family love was the same 6000 miles from my own home. My sisters Eliana, Gisela, and I traveled to various other cities. This is in a park in Concepcion, the second largest city in Chile. 80 Sometimes I wonder how people of different races, religions, and customs can live in peace and harmony. Somehow, they manage to do it in Malaysia. It is not surprising then, to find a great number of intermarriages in our country. I, myself, am a product of an intermarriage. My mother is an Arab whereas my father is a Sumatran. There are seven other children be- side me. We live at 1435, Jalan Abdul Rah- man Andak, johore, Bahru, johore, Malaysia. Come and visit me sometime! This is my mother, my- self, and my grand- mother in front of our house. The beautiful island gem of Barbados lies off the mainland of South America, It is noted for its flying fish, sugar-cane, cricketers, and most of all, the warmness and friendliness of its 246, OOO inhabitants. Tropical Barbados, is a winter sonderland for those who seek relief from the cold winters like those of Wisconsin. It is with a little sadness and a wonderful memory that I return to my home at: Principal's Residence, Government Industrial School, St. Philip, Barbados. aaa? My home is an old St. John's Church is one , of the most beautiful Plantation house, and Churches in Barbados' is characteristic of many of the old homes in Barb ados. 82 I-1 ' I-Ima Norway, the country of smiling people and midnight sun, is located as the northernmost country in Europe. lt is long and thin with mountains, farms, and wonderful beaches. The climate is similar to that of Wisconsin. Skiing and skating are the national sports--remember the Olympics! The Norwegian people with their friendliness welcome anyone who wants to see what the land of fiords is like. My home is at Elvefaret 13 Oslo 7, Norway. Even the best skier can fall on a slalom hill. Cross-country skiing is V also very popular in I Norway. This is my family. My mother is a housewife. My sis- ter Stine, is in high school. My father is a mechan ical engineer.
