Spirit was high among the Mariners as they presented class skits, cheered at the pep rally, and competed against each other to make the best float for the parade. All week, Mariners waited anxiously to find out who would be the 1983-84 Homecoming Queen. When the Mariners reached Todd Stadium, the anticipation grew to even a higher level. Finally, at half- time, the court was presented. It con- sisted of one freshman, Karren Langen; two sophomores, Alexis Canavos and Pam Mayo; three juniors, Jenny Brit- tingham, Pam Williams, and Yvonne Burns; and four seniors, Dora Banks, Nan Carney, Darlene Carney, and Yvonne Youngblood. Yvonne, escorted by senior Chris Warren, was crowned Homecoming Queen. Yvonne’s dream came true, as did many others. The Homecoming Dance was held Saturday night from eight o’clock until midnight. Old and new Mariners gathered together to dance the night away to music provided by deejay David Long. Senior Laura Seltzer and her date Chip Goldstein goof off at the Homecoming Dance. FRIENDS 17 “The Man Who Came To Dinner” was the first play put on by the Drama Department this year. Under the supervision of Ms. Pat Quinn, the cast members presented the story of a guest who, after coming to the Stanley’s home for dinner and slip- ping on their front porch steps, re- mained there while recuperating from a broken hip. The uninvited long-term guest, played by Dennis Hinnant, disrupted the family’s lifestyle while staying with them. Being a Senior meant being able to go off campus for lunch and eat in the Senior cafeteria. Despite these privileges, most Seniors came down with a condition after first semester known as “Senioritis.” “Senioritis” was usually caused by overexertion during exam time, too many assignments due, and thoughts of the warm weather and sunny beaches. Symptoms included endless gazing out of classroom win- dows, dozing off during lectures, in- ability to complete assignments, and, most of all, terminal procrastination. There was only one sure-fire cure for this condition... They held meetings after school every Monday except for the first week in the month. These meetings sometimes con- sisted of lectures presented by speakers such as Mr. Nolan from the Newport News Police Department, who talked about drug abuse. Other officers were Christopher Hamilton, Vice-President; Mark Bunn, Chaplain; and Victor Raposo, Secretary-Treasurer. The Keyettes also had a very active year. They raised money by selling cups, posters, and Christmas items and donated most of it to worthwhile community service groups. They | also donated hours of time working with the | Santa House, the Salvation Army, and the) SPCA. Projects included riding for Pedal for | Pediatrics, helping local elementary schools, | volunteering time to the SIDS Campaign, and donating money to Riverside Hospital’s Books for Babies program. New this year was a trial “pledge” period for new members to prove their eligibility for being a Keyette and a stricter point system. Officers included Presi- dent Sheri Richman, Vice-President Faythe Sermons, Recording Secretary Teresa Young, Corresponding Secretary Theresa Rosser, Treasurer Melissa Robinson, Reporter Ginger Everett, and Parliamentarian Sandy Heezen. Led by Co- Presidents Lisa Edwards and Sandy Heezen, a group of closely-knit officers including Vice President Chris Quesenberry, Secretary Alexis Canavos, Treasurer Nan Carney, Reporter Sharon Roesen, and Sponsor Mrs. Halberg, AFS members enjoyed many fun-filled events, such as International Weekend. In November, foreign exchange students from all over the Peninsula came to stay with Ferguson members. Weekend activities included a Pro- gressive Dinner, a trip to Waterside, a play, a huge football game, and a party at Lisa’s house. In January, Ferguson members were in- vited to “Meet Patrick Night” at the Plen- inger’s house. This gave members and their parents a chance to get to know Ferguson’s Belgian exchange student, Patrick Boyen. In April, members went on Short Term Exchange for five days. Later in the year, they par- ticipated in such fund-raisers as garage sales and car washes to raise money for next year. The Foreign Language Club led by sponsor Kaye Brown and President Faith Sermons began a busy year by preparing and entering their international theme float in the Homecoming Parade. They continued with regular meetings which often featured guest speakers. In the spring the Foreign Language banquet was held which allowed students to sample various different foreign dishes. Invitational Model United Nations Con- ference at Georgetown University. Most of the delegates were present or past members of the International Rela- tions US Soviet Relations class taught by Ms. Marika Anthony. Students thoroughly researched the foreign policy of their assigned countries and then represented it in mock sessions of the UN. Being a delegate demanded assert- iveness, confidence, and a complete knowledge of the structure of the United Nations as well as the situations dis- cussed. Officers were President Patrick Boyen, Vice-President Jenny Decker, Secretary Tina Webster, and Treasurer Ian Coogan. The Forensics Club had three members placing in district competition this year: Renardo Bell, Michelle Braguglia, and Sheri Richman. Several other members competed against other area _high- schoolers in one of the five categories: ex- temporaneous speaking, original oratory, prose, poetry or spelling. To prepare for the February meet at Hampton High School, the Club met after school twice a month to practice public speaking and receive coaching from their sponsor, Ms. Joyce Ballard. Administration for the After hearing the report of the Na- tional Committee on Excellence in Education, the administration began work to improve the quality of Ferguson’s academic program. Stricter attendance policies, fewer assemblies, and a new bell schedule maximized class time for students. The administration also worked on improving the quality of Ferguson’s academics by holding regular faculty meetings to inform teachers of new Mr. Bobby Cropper S.C.A.’s school policies. Administrative responsibility was divided between Principal John Kilpatrick and the three Assistant Principals, Mr. Crop- per, Mr. Cottingham, and Mrs. Lamberton. English One of the English Department’s major goals this year was to improve students’ SAT scores. To meet this goal, after-school workshops were held for both students and teachers. Also, English teachers were asked to devote at least one day a week towards SAT preparation. This, along with expanded summer reading requirements for all classes, helped to raise the students’ performance on the standardized tests. By attending workshops, members of the English Department were also able to perfect their teaching skills. The Foreign Language Depart- ment’s goal this year was not only to help the students speak more fluent- ly in other languages, but also to in- crease the students’ interests in dif- ferent countries and their cultures. Courses offered included French, German, Spanish, and Latin. The Social Studies Department’s goals consisted of increasing the level of written com- munication skills, helping students develop an inquiring mind, and creating an informed citiz enry. Something new in the department was that the Social Studies teachers enrolled in aé_ special class at Christopher Newport College first semester to learn new strategies of in- dividualized instruction. This year, the Government classes took field trips to Richmond to observe the General Assembly in ac- tion, and to Washington, D.C. to observe Congress and the Supreme Court in action. The Model U.N. took field trips in Old Dominion Universi- ty, and to the North American Invita- tional, which was held at Georgetown. In the Fall, the Social Studies Department presented a_ political debate between Councilman William Haskins and State Senator Bobby Scott. Science teachers also assisted students with their science projects, and provided them with a variety of visual aids. The audio visual presentations were cataloged, so that students would have easier access to them. CRT Tests were given to all science students this year, unlike past years, where they were administered only in some classes. This year the department offered courses ranging from Basic Math up to Calculus, in- cluding the newest course offered, Computer Programming. Two Math contests were offered to get students to make use of their math skills. A half hour competitive test, held each month, was sponsored by the Virginia Math League. The American Math Exam was also a competitive testing program given to students. All math classes were required to do some type of daily activity so that the teacher could check students’ understanding of the lessons and check to see if students had com- pleted their homework. To add to the excellence of the department, all Math teachers made it a point to have a good attendance record, and to be available to help students before school. 4Ms. Hall answers one of Valerie Bicouvaris’ questions after class.
