It is with gratitude and pleasure that we dedicate our 1964 annual to our deserving assistant principal, Mr. Jack Powers. The background of v as t experience that he brought with him to Ferguson has been of benefit to all who have come in con- tact with him. After graduating from South Norfolk High, which is now Oscar Smith, Mr. Powers attended the University of Richmond. In 1940 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history. After deciding to enter the teaching profession, he be- gan his career at Ashland High. From there he went to Chester, Oscar Smith, and Craddock High. Among the subjects which he taught were history, English, economics, and physical education. In addition to these he found time to coach all four major sports. Before coming to Ferguson as assistant principal in 1961, Mr. Powers taught history at New- port News High and coached our rival school in football, basketball, and baseball. During this time he attended summer school at the College of William and Mary and received his Master ' s Degree in Education. Our assistant principal has always been keenly interested in athletics. In both high school and college he participated in football, basketball, and baseball. Before World War II he played professional football for the Portsmouth Cubs and the Norfolk Shamrocks. Mr. Powers is a loyal Ferguson fan and a fervent supporter of all school activities. He has the admiration of students and faculty alike. In years to come the name of Mr. Jack Powers is certain to be synonymous with a friendly smile, a deep personal concern for the welfare of each Mariner and a sincere devotion to duty. OH, NO! NOT YOU AGAIN! HERE ' S HOW, BOYS! OUR BOOKIE! KEEP TO THE RIGHT, MARINERS! In, Ulomoi ' ian This is a dangerous and uncertain world. No one expects our lives to be easy- Not in this decade, not in this century. :Un Tii Jtcnncbi -John Kennedy’ s last speech, Fort Worth rmm lrciiion rnen cmor veruaemeu 10 Some people say that a treasure is an accumulation of wealth while others feel that it is a greatly valued thing which should be put away for future use. By these two definitions I qualify Ferguson as the personal treasure chest of every hearty Mariner! Each day at Ferguson enriches our knowledge of life, enhances our priceless school spirit and increases our private store of memories. The knowledge we have gathered in these halls will be our precision tool in future years. With it we will carve for ourselves a place in a competitive society. The pride that we, as students, feel in our school marks Ferguson as an outstanding school on the peninsula. Our un- daunted school spirit proclaims to all that we have much to offer and much to gain through our unity of purpose. The lasting friendships begun here will not end here but will abide with us as gems of remem- brance to remind us of the many happy times shared hereby our fellow Mariners. This year has been a memorable one at Ferguson; it has been especially valuable and impressive to the seniors. This annual is our effort to provide you with a pictorial key to the treasure chest that is Ferguson in the year 1964. 9t ore won cf 1 1 if m v Vi n i . - SaL v o Uhe deeper of the heps JlCr. h ho mas 5 . Jja nes Jhtnctpa May I commend you upon another successful year at Ferguson High School. Many of you have taken full advantage of the excellent opportunities offered by the school to improve your educational ambitions; each one of you has made a significant contribution to the growth and development of the school during the year. The school and the ideals for which it stands is like unto a treasure chest of great riches. Your attendance and the way you use your time here are like unto golden keys that unlock the treasure chest. The riches of the treasure chest will help you to find security, prosperity and happiness in a rapidly changing world. Your daily experiences will help you to realize that a good education is necessary to an enjoyable way of life. 13 Assist an l CPrincip Leadership is the Passage-way. Students were running to polish their cars, to select their dates’ corsages. Phones were ringing. Plans were made, changed and made again. The pulsation of excitement quickened. The night was drawing near. Ferguson High School ' s first H omecoming was here at last. All classes were proudly represented at the game, as the nineteen sixty-three Homecoming Court was pre- sented. Miss Sandy Smith received the crown as the team received the glory of winning our first homecoming game by the impressive score of 27 to 6 over Suffolk. Sandy was perhaps a little disbelieving at first, but walked with poise and gracefulness as she led her court off the field. Homecoming came to its climax at a dance held in honor of the queen and her court. The cafeteria was appropriately festoonedwith the Mariner colors. Howie and the Blazers provided music for the occasion. One and all experienced an enjoyable evening. 49 Linda Giles Kathy Colbourn 1964 Jfom e coming Gourl Linda Nelson Martha Smith Dorothy Correll W I f f ' U k- ' c Pattie Finch tJ3ancf Sweetheart TFCtss Ann Sederde r% JlCtss Courtney Andrews TKtss J7 udy It) at son The Mariner Band, for the first time this year, elected a Band Sweet- heart. She has urged her teams to victory since the eighth grade and has served the past four years as either captain or co-captain of the cheering squad. In the spring of 1963 the National Honor Society reviewed her qualifications and readily admitted her as a member in good standing. Dorothy’s leadership ability has further been demonstrated through her class and S.C.A. work. Last year she served ably as president of her class. S.C.A. began to command much of our cheerleader ' s time as far back as the eighth grade. She has several times rep- resented her school as a delegate to S.C.A. District, Federation and State Conventions and this year serves as secretary of her S.C.A. cS eruice . . . Jimmy ' s friendly smile and winning ways make him a favorite wherever he goes. Key Club members recognize him as a leader among leaders. During his sophomore year he was an alternate to the Key Club International Convention and was a representative to the District Convention. During his junior and senior years he served his Key Club as secretary and vice president respectively. As a junior Jimmy was induct- ed into the National Honor Society and this year serves as its president. His membership in S.C.A. extends back to the eighth grade. He has represented Ferguson at the S.C.A. District Convention and has served on numerous committees of S.C.A. This year Jimmy serves as a Senior Usher. 56 Seniors. . The first thing to impress one about Bobby is his versatility. He has been successful in all fields of en- deavor. His athletic ability is attested to by his par- ticipation in basketball, football, and track over the past five years. He has been an active Key Club member for three years and this years serves as its president. He has represented his club at both the Key Club District and International Conventions. He served as the competent vice president of both his sophomore and junior classes. Bobby is a member of the National Honor Society and is a Senior Usher. For the past four years S.C.A. work has rounded out B obby ' s busy schedule. He has taken a keen interest in school government and has represented his school at the S.C.A. District, Federation and State Conventions. Martha ' s schooldays have been marked by the quiet efficiency of a perfectionist. Mariners who have read their names in Teen Herald for the past three years probably have been unaware that Martha was the school reporter who put them in the spotlight. Her literary talent and organizational ability made Martha a natural choice as one of the first co-editors of Ferguson ' s newspaper, the WINDJAMMER. During her junior year Martha became a member of the National Honor Society. Her truthfulness and sincerity led her class- mates to elect her their class treasurer during her sophomore, junior and senior years. For the past five years Martha has been a member of the S.C.A. and has served as a delegate to the S.C.A. District and Federation Conventions. 57 JR art Via Lynn Jen try C) ass of 64 L es ee da ue C. us tig Little but lively might adequately be applied to Leslee. Her efforts, abilities and interests have all left their marks on Ferguson. For the past three years she has been a mainstay on the cheering squad. During her junior year she was a member of the A Cappella Choir and during the same year she won rec- ognition by being tapped for membership in the National Honor Society. Leslee ' s S.C.A. service has been long and devoted. This year she serves as first vice presi- dent of the governing body. Outstanding service during her freshman year as treasurer and during her sopho- more and junior years as reporter well qualified Leslee for her present position. She has also served as a delegate to both the S.C.A. District and Federation Conventions. David liJ iitt Dut edge Because of his many outstanding accomplishments in S.C.A. work, David has become known as Mr. S.C.A. to Ferguson students. His work in this organi- zation dates back to the eighth grade. During his fresh- man year he was S.C.A. president and for the next two years served the S.C.A. as second vice president. This year Ferguson felt honored to have David elected state president of S.C.A., an office which sent him as a delegate to the National Convention. David ' s abilities also carry him onto the playing field. He played junior high basketball and has long been a member of the var- sity football team and track squad. Mr. S.C.A. is a Senior Usher and a member of the WINDJAMMER staff. The Key Club, too, claims David as one of its outstand- ing members. 58 0 SG71 Cxeculiue Council SEATED (1-r): Mrs. Passage, Advisor; Bob Peterson, President; Leslee Lustig, First Vice president; John Olney, Second Vice president; Dorothy Correll, Secre- tary. We first entered the halls of Ferguson, then Warwick Junior High School, in the autumn of 1959. Giggly with excitement, we toured the building for the first time, marvelling at the differences we found from elementary school. Wefound ourselves suddenly subject to new rules; we experienced having more than one teacher, lunch time without a teacher to watch over us, and rushing to get to class on time. We began exploring the various new activities of a junior high - football, basketball, S.C.A., dances and clubs. The following year we, as freshmen, were the upperclassmen and the leaders of our school. David Rutledge served as president of the S.C.A. Our football and basketball teams again ranked highest on the Peninsula; they were urged on enthusiastically by our cheerleaders and cheering section. Perhaps the most outstanding event of our freshman year was our mock election of Richard Nixon as President of the United States. Spirit ran high and enthusiasm showed itself in the vigorous campaigning which preceded the election. In the spring of our freshman year, we all heard the news that Warwick Junior High was to be trans- formed into Homer L. Ferguson High School. Therefore our sophomore year became one of the most exciting years as we entered a period of transition from junior high to high school. Because our junior class was new from Warwick that year, it was the sophomores, led by the newly elected president David Cottrell, who worked diligently in planning an orientation program for the newcomers to Ferguson High. Many traditions were begun and precedents set that year. Our sports department made tremendous growth with the addition of a baseball team, a golf team, a tennis team, and a wrestling team. They all did re- markably well ! Our class held the first Sophomore Recreation Night which we hoped would become an annual Sophomore event. Though that was a year of many, many changes, by spring thoughts were turning to the junior year, one of the most important of our high school career. That year we gave the first Senior Prom. What an experience that was! Dorothy Correll, as our class president, served as co-ordinator of Prom activities. Projects to raise money were held, including the first powder puff football game complete with male cheerleaders and homecoming court. The junior girls defeated the senior girls, whom they had challenged. The powder puff football game was only one of the first of the class of ' 64. We held our first twirp week, and, as a class, we sent a boy and girl to Boys ' State and Girls ' State. We ordered our class rings in February and we thought they would never arrive. However, the big day in May finally came, and with boundless enthusiasm and pride in our school, we had our rings placed on our fingers or around our necks. Then we could honestly feel that the biggest and best year of them all, our senior year, loomed near at hand. Our senior year was just what we had expected--the most outstanding and formative year of our lives at Ferguson. Early in September, our class president Paul Phillips called a class meeting and necessary committees were formed for the class song, flower and motto, for convocation, for commencement, and for the dozens of other things that seniors must concern themselves with. As we assumed more respon- sibilities, we were granted more privileges. Early in March we ordered our caps and gowns, calling cards and announcements, along with another Ferguson first — the class key. These arrived in May. By this time, most of us had decided whether college or career lay before us. Our Prom was held on May 23rd in the gyms with Camelot the theme. The Senior Banquet, held on April 25th, featured Mr. James Windsor as principal speaker. The Senior Assembly was held on May 29th. Scholarships were presented to deserving Seniors and the Senior gift, a new podium, was presented to Mr. Baines, Mrs. Passage, and Mrs. Taback. The Convocation Service was held on June 4th, followed on June 5th by the Senior Picnic which was held at Mariner ' s Museum. Commencement, the biggest event of the year was held on June 7th on the school lawn. Our Senior speakers were Jimmy Boon, valedictorian, and Olivian Boggs, salutatorian. The high school career of the class of ' 64 had come to an end. For years Ferguson has been the axis of our activities. Beneath its roof we ' ve discovered a some- times exciting, sometimes challenging, sometimes monotonous world, composed of teachers and friends, work and play. So now we leave this high school behind us, equipped with knowledge which needs to be applied in order not to be forgotten. Sally Hodge Historian 229 JJJie J ig nig Jit of the Saturday, May 23rd was one of the most anxiously awaited evenings of the year for many Mariners. It was the date of our Senior Prom and the climax of weeks of preparation on the part of the juniors. Their efforts were brightly reflected in the magnificent transformation of our gym into the castle Camelot. Certainly all those who attended werevery much impressed and would agree that this year ' s prom was a grand success. Queen Nicki King Paul 230 231 232 C71sse n6 y ancf CPicnic—June J 233 Another outstanding event of the Seniors ' year was the ban- quet held Saturday evening in the cafeteria. David Rutledge, master of ceremonies, introduced the guest speaker Mr. James Windsor of Christopher Newport College. At the close of the banquet the Seniors stood and sang their class song You ' ll Never Walk Alone. Convocation was held Thursday morning in the auditorium. After the processional, played by Rives Cassel, and the introit, sung by our A Cappella Choir, the invocation was given by Rabbi 234 Arnold Task. Our speaker was the Reverend Mr. Elmer Bosser- man. After the choir sang America My Own , Father Frank Ready gave the benediction.
