Since coming to our school in 1956, he has built our band into an organization which proudly rep- resents Ferguson High School wherever it goes. His con- tributions have been quiet ones; he gives advice, he assists the drama department with its productions; he offers his assistance to band members during his off-hours . There- fore, we, the 1963 annual staff, dedicate the MARINER to Mr. Donald Bruno. 4 CATION A man who has done so much in inspiring and promoting school spirit during our first years as a high school deserves special mention in this edition of THE MARINER. We are deepfully grateful for the teaching he has done, the inspiration he has kindled, and the spirit he has helped to instill in both the student body and the Mariner” teams. We, the 1963 annual staff, in grateful appreciation for his memorable con- tributions to Ferguson High, dedicate the 1963 MARINER to Coach Wayne Begor. s CONTENTS Administration and Faculty. 9 Classes 28 Academics 103 Features 115 Activities 125 Sports 149 FOREWORD It is with great pleasure that we, the MARINER Staff, present the following pages of your memory book. We hope that today and in years to come you will turn these pages and recall with pleasure the true spirit of Ferguson High. Our attempt has been to record that spirit as it really is--in work, in play, in friendship. Turn the pages now and listen for the heartbeat that is Ferguson! SUPERINTENDENT Dr. R. O. Nelson SCHOOL BOARD SEATED: Mr. Gordan Pullen, Mr. Robert M. Saunders, Mr. J. N. Dozier, Chairman; Mr. Richard Newman, Dr. Waldo Scott. STANDING: Mr. Ward R. Scull, Dr. William T. Watkins. ■IH k ' y it % 7 f f mm 3 , PRINCIPAL MR. THOMAS E. BAINES Principal ' s Message During the current school year the administration and faculty have worked diligently to provide a program of work to challenge the natural abilities of all the students. New courses have been added and the content in others has been improved to provide encourage- ment and stimulation to those who seek enrichment in areas of special interest. Many students have availed themselves of the opportunities afforded at Ferguson High School and they will find when they transfer to other schools or graduate and go to college that very little adjustment is required to meet the demands of their new situations. Those who graduate from high school and take their places in the business world will quickly realize the value of worthwhile preparation. The administration and faculty will continue to strive toward raising the standards of our school and improving the educational oppor- tunities of the youth of this community. We are looking forward to our first commencement. To some this program will mean graduation; to many others it will mean a goal toward which an educational program leads. We heartily congratulate you, seniors, and wish for you the best in health, happiness and prosperity. Undergraduates, we challenge you to intensify your desire for a sound educa- tional background so that you may compete successfully in our demanding world. We hope that the years spent in this school have helped to bring each of you to the realization that education is a never ending part of life. Smooth sailing and full steam ahead, has been said to many a mariner as he embarked on a new journey. This ancient blessing expresses the sentiment I feel as you leave the halls of Ferguson High School to continue your journey through life. You will face challenges unique to the youth of all generations but if you will remember and uphold the ideals and principles for which the school stands you will be guided and prepared to meet those chal- lenges. The manner in which you master the challenges will provide you with opportunities to honor your school and make a worthy contribution to the improvement of our world. Mrs. Mary L. Here we were going to a junior high away from all those little kids in elemen- tary school ! It seemed, then, like we would never forget the junior high dances, the different school rules, the football and basketball games, the assemblies, and those elections of our first junior high days. The ninth grade brought Dick Allerton into office as S.C.A. President. We were the upper classmen that year. Everyone re- members the funny things we used to do when we were in that awk- ward stage of life, and we all especially remember the highly ranked football and basketball teams on which many of our classmates played. On we grew, looking forward to the year when we would be at the high school with the big kids. Our sophomore year was full of fun. We looked up to those big Warwick High Seniors just waiting for the day when we could be just as grown-up as they were. Dick Allerton, sophomore class president, could be found among his sophomore classmates at high school games, watching high school elections, and doing high school homework. Our junior year brought many changes. We were moved to a new high school that held many old junior high memories. At first, perhaps, there was a little regret; but as time went on, all juniors could be found taking apart in Ferguson High School activi- ties, and setting many precedents for other classes to follow: We, the upperclassmen again, started our year off well with the election of Harvey Huffstetler as class president. We began the long road toward unifying ourselves after the loss of many good friends. We ordered our class rings that year and looked forward to their arrival that spring. We held our own Junior Prom with the proceeds from the sale of basketball buttons. The theme of our prom- An- chors Away . All in all, it was a year of building not only on the school grounds but in the junior class as well. Our Senior year started out smoothly and with great anticipa- tion. We had reached our final year. Jerry Allen was elected Sen- ior Class president in a high-spirited election held in the spring of our junior year. With the help of our class advisor, Miss Olney, Jerry helped to make our senior year the climax of our high school education. During our senior year, many class meetings were held where all could voice their opinions. Senior Privileges were grant- ed for the first time at Ferguson High School. Committees were appointed and the results were our Class Motto, Keep your face always to the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you ; our Class Colors, blue and silver; our Class Flower, white orchid; and our Senior Personalities. As a project to buy a gift for the school, the Senior Class sold directories. A powder-puff football game was held and a group of defeated senior girls left a field of triumphant junior girls. Our class was honored with the election of Powder-puff Queen Wilson Harper and Football Queen Bunny Dix. A real triumph came for us when we beat War- wick at the Thanksgiving Day Game. A more serious time arrived when our class counselor Mr. Vassos held a College Day and Col- lege Night. At this time applications for college were being sent out and acceptances or refusals received. This year, Ferguson installed its first ushers, all of whom are Seniors. As 1963 came, new committees were established: Commence- ment, Senior Banquet, Senior Assembly, Senior Day and Announce- ments and Calling Cards. All were Ferguson firsts. Meanwhile, Juniors worked hard to make our Senior Prom a good one. Each committee’s work came to a climax with new ideas carried out and memories that would be held by every Senior. It was hard for us to believe that we were going to graduate at last! ! We, the Class of 1963, leave Ferguson High School with hopes of a bright future. We leave hoping that the shadows will fall be- hind us and that the sunshine will forever beam on Ferguson, its students, and its faculty. By Gerry Burks Historian CLASS Mono . . . Many appeared for the au- ditions and Mrs. Dresser selected the cast for the play. The parts were assigned and many weeks of hard work followed. The nu- merous people involved with the production spent countless hours before and after school and on Saturdays. The results were obvious and on opening night an excellent performance was given. Yyenoyama Margaret Hall Sonja Kramer Judy Gray Miss Fitchett, I think my machine has the wrong answer! Mrs. Smidt, here ' s an English word in my French book! In addition to our native tongue, we have an opportunity to study French, Spanish, German, and Latin. Most of the students in these classes are either bound for college or for another country! That Odysseus really got around, didn ' t he? But that ' s where it was yesterday, Mr. Prunty! Ferguson has one of the most outstanding Social Studies departments in our school system. We are required to study U.S. history our junior year and government our senior year. In addition, world geography, world history and sociology are offered. We are for- tunate in having this fine department with well-qualified teachers who instill in students an appreciation for our heritage. I know these columns from one end to the other, Mrs. Anthony! Did he really ' catch ' you several years ago, Mrs. Williams? foul Of , cl£ A £ tQ.UM- , l + pf f £ACK fVfc A . lL £NK c r M ?L a uNt con - GlVJP ° ,A ' r vJC ?o,Nt? 6w£NWi _ And this is how I arrived at my answer, Mr. Leonard. The Ferguson Mathematics Department is an excellent one. All students are required to take a math course before they finish their high school career, and there is a course for every student. Ferguson ' s Math Department offers a wide variety of courses laying a firm foundation for college as well as everyday living. ' This is how my dad used to do it, Mrs. Mothena. Mrs. Taback, who makes up the rules every year? ' I think something is wrong with my microscope, Mr. Fletcher. We have worked hard in our Science Department this year. By utilizing our modern labs and new instruments we have ably fitted ourselves to face an era of scientific advance- ment and exploration. Yes, that looks like the one in the picture in the lab manual. Mr. Freeman, please, this is my third guess! I think it ' s all in whether or not you put your little finger on your brush. It looks so simple when you do it, Miss Bieri! Through the help of our Art Department, we have turned out many interesting paintings, clay figures, and woodworks. We find that art is very helpful in developing and carrying out one’s imagination. Mr. Woody, it looks just like her! All right, who’s squeaking? Miss Bayne, aren ' t you glad my voice finally changed? Much appreciation is in store for our highly trained Music Department. Our musicians work hard to entertain the students and provide that all-important school spirit at Ferguson. ' Just think, Mr. Bruno, I can make the loudest noise in school! A I didn ' t know getting ' pretty ' was such a tedious task. With the able assistance of our drama coach, we have learned much in the fields of acting and speaking-both on-stage and off-stage. Mrs. Dresser, I ' m not certain whether you ' do ' or you don ' t ' ! Say, acting can be great fun! They do tell us to plan ahead, don ' t they? Our well-equipped kitchens and our many modern sewing machines make our Home Eco- nomics Department a fine one indeed. Girls, and even an occasional boy, study the many phases of homemaking. Miss Barrow, do you think I could ever be a real model? Oh, if kitchen work were just so simple! This year we found that several new courses had been added to our Business Depart- ment. Many of the students taking these courses are being prepared for jobs such as sec- retaries, clerks, and bookkeepers. I think I should have been born with a mechanical mind, Mrs. Wilson. a We have found Industrial Arts to be quite important in preparing for carpentry or engi- neering. If we put as much effort as possible into our courses, we will gain much helpful experience. I declare, Mr. Lance, you get smarter every day! A Mrs. Gregory, I think I have a bone in my leg. Physical Education, we have found, is a very essential course. It helps to develop a sportsman like attitude and a healthy body and provides students with a daily outlet for their frustrations! But, Coach, look how much of me there is! A skit was presented by the SCA depicting the doom of the Falcons. Later the 1962 Football Court was presented. It consisted of four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, one freshmen, and one eighth grader. All were escorted by members of the football squad. Due to bad weather the game was postponed until two o’clock Saturday afternoon. At half-time the band exhibited some fancy marching which was followed by the presentation of the Football Court. After the Court had assembled at midfield, Mr. Thomas Baines, our principal, crowned Miss Bunny Dix our 1962 Football Queen. The Queen then reigned over the Football Dance the next evening, climaxing a week of school-spirited fun. Casey’s Coffin Corporation Long live the Queen! Eyes right! Dick might well be called Mr. Versa- tility. For the past two years he has served as president of the Ferguson S.C.A. He has been active in S.C.A. work throughout his high school career and several times has been a delegate to both the State and District S.C.A. Conventions. For three years Dick has been a most enthusiastic member of the Key Club. During his junior year he held the office of vice president and was presented the Outstand- ing Key Club Award. As a sophomore Dick headed his class as president. His many ac- tivities have not interfered with his studies. He has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past two years. In his spare time our Mr. Versatility finds time to play tennis and basketball. Dick ' s many-sided personality should fit him well to enter the profession of law, his chosen field of study. LEADERSHIP - SCHO GERALDINE MARTHA BURKS Gerry has been interested in music for several years. This year she is president of the A Cappella Choir. Last year she was vice president of the Mixed Chorus and was a mem- ber of the Girls ' Chorus. For the second con- secutive year r she has been selected as a mem- ber of the All- State Chorus. Gerry ' s interests are not all centered around music. She has been an active member of the Spanish Club for three years and in her junior year served as its president. This year she is one of Ferguson ' s most vivacious cheerleaders. In the fall Gerry was honored with the position of senior attendant in the Football Court. She spends much of her time in S.C.A. work and is historian of the Senior Class. Gerry ' s plans are to enter the field of teaching. 122 SENIORS SANDRA KAY SHEPPARD Sandra is an active member and enthusi- astic officer of the F.H.A. In her sophomore year she was elected secretary of the Pen- insula Federation. In her junior year she was president of the Ferguson Chapter and vice president of the Peninsula Federation. This year she is president of both the Peninsula Federation and the Virginia Association of the F.H.A. For the past two years this outstanding member of the Senior Class has been secretary of the National Honor Society. In her junior year Sandra was elected parliamentarian of her class. This year she is an S.C.A. com- mittee chairman, librarian of the F.T.A. and a dependable member of the Senior Ushers. Sandra plans to enter the teaching profession. .ARSHIP - SERVICE WILLIAM HARVEY HUFFSTETLER During his high school years, band has commanded much of Harvey’s time and inter- est. He was an active band member until his busy senior year. Harvey has proved to be a conscientious Senior Usher. He has been quite active in the Key Club, and has traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Long Beach, California, to represent his club at interna- tional conventions. For the past two years Harvey has served as president of the Key Club. Recognizing his leadership ability, his Junior Class elected Harvey as its pres- ident. He has also been active in S.C.A. activ- ities and since his sophomore year has been called upon to serve this group in many capac- ities. This year he was selected as a delegate to both the S.C.A. District Convention and the Southern Conference Convention. Harvey plans to study in the field of medicine. 123 POWDER PUFF GAME Practice makes perfect! For many weeks previous to November 31,1962, one could see an odd sight on the practice fields of Ferguson High .... girls p laying football. And hard they practiced too, in order to get ready for the first Powder- Puff Football Game ever held at Ferguson. On the afternoon of the Powder- Puff clash the two opposing teams took to the field, wearing the blue and white varsity uniforms. They were cheered by boys dressed as girl cheerleaders. Halftime found the score tied and everyone enjoyed seeing a band perform, led by boys dressed as majorettes. A Football Court, composed of boys, was driven onto the field in convertibles. Miss Wilson Harper, a senior, was crowned queen of the Powder-Puff game. At the end of the game, hastened by darkness, the juniors won by a score of 13-6. Both teams played a hard and spirited game and both agreed that practice always makes perfect! S.C.A. The 1963 Wrestling Team had one of the best seasons of any team this year. The Mariner Matmen won five, lost six and tied Warwick in a fine match with the Farmers. In the Eastern District Wrestling Tourna- ment, Ferguson finished seventh; a fine showing for a school with only two years ex- perience. Five grapplers placed in the top six of their respective weight classes, thus making them eligible to represent Ferguson in the State Wrestling Tournament held in Arlington, Virginia. With only three seniors graduating the wrestling team has much to look forward to in the coming season. Putting together a yearbook is a brain- racking task, but the finished product brings a great deal of satisfaction to those who have helped to assemble it. Besides daily meetings during fourth period, the staff spent many hours selling ads, taking snapshots, and organizing students for group pictures. The Mariner made several strides in the way of new ideas, as can be seen by the blue and white cover honoring our first graduating class, more sections and pages, and a dual dedication. This is your history book of Ferguson High School, 1962-63. Treasure it with fond memories ! 178 Always working. This is only a small word of appreciation given to Mrs. Viven Neale by the yearbook staff. As our new advisor, Mrs. Neale has well accepted the respon- sibility that goes with laying out THE MARINER. Each of us wishes to ex- press our appreciation for her as ' - sistance, guidance, thought and pa- tience. Mrs. Vivien Neale LEFT TO RIGHT: Donna Crenshaw, Sue Rezarch, Gary Duncan, Carson Wiedeman Experience is the key word to the success of a yearbook. Carson Wie- deman, editor-in-chief, was editor of his high school newspaper in Dayton, Ohio. Sue Rezarch, assistant editor, is new to the yearbook trade but has worked faithfully to give Ferguson students a better annual. Gary Dun- can, managing editor and business manager, was the first editor of THE MARINER. Donna Crenshaw, as- sistant business manager and adver- tising editor, was last year ' s picture editor. Your editors hope their work meets with your approval. Identification of individual pic- tures was the biggest headache the staff faced. The staff searched constantly for new ideas and sought originality in an effort to imnrove the 1963 MARINKR. Ronnie, Pat, Bobby, and Kathy sort pictures and prepare art work for the yearbook. •fuss’s _- bee 0 ' BOULEVARD CLEANERS 9901 Warwick Boulevard 5 Convenient Locations Fast Service on shirts-khakis Fur Wool Storage Vault Call LY 6-3713 MUTUAL HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION of Newport News, Virginia 210 30th Street Call The Plays Plan The College Days Open a college savings account with this Association; then add to it weekly or monthly.
