Homer has been very special to me. I shall miss all the students who have made HCS A Great Place to Learn. ” In the future, I hope to make a positive impact on public education, which is the backbone of our democratic society. I will spend the rest of my life ensuring that public schools continue. I chose a career in education because I enjoy the enthusiasm and vision of youth. The group, smaller than in previous years, attended a pre-ledge conference in Battle Creek in the fall. There, the Homer delegates participated in the election to send Penny Parrish of Quincy to Lansing as the South Western District Candidate for Governor. The next order of business for the group was the annual trip to Lansing for the Spring Conference where the participants actually take over the Capitol Building. This year the delegates enjoyed the use of the new Rad-dtson Hotel. While at Lansing. Russ Brown from the Detroit area was elected Michigan Youth Governor for the 1987-88 year. Delegates from Homer held such responsibilities as Lobbyists, Senators. House Representatives, and were members of the Governor’s Cabinet. Many students left Lansing with friends from across the state and all participants left with a better understanding of slate government. Issues that were debated in Lansing dealt with such topics as: Teacher competency, homosexuality, living wills, organ donor cards, prostitution, the 65 m.p.h. speed limit and student representation on local school boards. Debate: not all talk Resolved that the Federal Government should implement a comprehensive, long-term agricultural policy in the Untied States. this resolution was on the minds of debaters across the country and the debaters from Homer were no exception. You may think that this resolution deals strictly with farmers and their problems. but for Came Maples. Laura Guy. Holly Blashfield. Angie Chamberlain, and Kim Combs it meant much more. An agricultural policy deals not only with farmers but with the credit crisis in America, acid rain, soil erosion, trade policy, and this year's topic also could include crisis with ag. in other parts of the globe. This year, the Homer debate team, although smaller than in previous years, was still fairly successful for its size. Holly Blashfield was able to win the lop 2nd Affirmative speaker in the Silver Gavel League, which Homer hosted. Carrie Maples also won the top team speaker in that league. Here are some thoughts from the band director: Our 1986-87 season was very busy for the Homer Trojan Bands Beginning with band Camp in July our marching band played at all home football games, and marched in the Homer Fall Festival parade and the Marshall Christmas parade. We had great fun with the pep band at basketball games. We performed well at the Christmas Concert. Festival concert, and Spring Concert. We were thrilled to host the Western Michigan University Woodwind Quintet in December and the Inter loc hen Arts Academy concert band in February. The high school band received an excellent rating for their Band Festival in February. Jamie Miller KINDERGARTEN 143 Once in a while, one staff member stands out above the rest, because of his her dedication to responsibility and mature rapDort with adviser, staff and peers. Heidi Carl is just such a leader. Her desire to create not only the best yearbok ever, but also to educate the student staff in the most dignified methods of layout and copywriting makes her a standout among her peers, and an outstanding yearbook Editor and leader. Working with Heidi taught us all a valuable lesson: they can, who think they can! 146 TROJAN PUBLICA TIONS Reflections, Spirit staffs wrap up successful year of publications Nineteen eighty-six proved to be the beginning of a school year filled with new ideas, talented staff and dedication to the production of outstanding publications. Under the guidance of Editor Ted Glynn, the Reflections staff organized monthly newspapers, attempting to bring to Homer students the news of happenings for and about them. This proved to be a huge undertaking, but after developing their organization and method, they continually put together a format in their newly-named Reflections newspaper of which they could always be proud. Associate Editor Heather Cook headed up the Editorial Department, from which she received much helpful experience as she succeeds Ted as Editor-in-chief of the 1987-88 Reflections. Heidi Carl and April Johncox, Editor and Associate Editor of the Trojan Spirit yearbook respectively, knew what was in store for them on the 1986-87 book after having attended a four-day workshop at Oakland University prior to the start of school this Fall. They took a week out of their summer vacation to learn as much as they could in the areas of layout, copywriting and photography. Diane Bolton, Adviser of both staffs, attended this workshop with Heidi and April, and sharpened her advisership skills, as well as those of photography. The result of these efforts produced a better-informed student staff and, as some have said, the best yearbook Homer has ever seen. As Spirit Editor-in-Chief for 1987-88. April definitely has a challenge! 1986-87 Publications' Staff Members: Left to Right, Front: Heather Cook, Kim Arnold. Tonya Hazel. April Johncox, Eric Boyd, Diane Bolton. Back Row: Holly Blashfield. Tammy Lons, Erin Cascarelli, Kellee Combs, Brian Grogg. Amy Bitz, Heidi Carl. Tim Cortright. Missing From Picture: John Evans. Ted Glynn. A not her school year is over, 1986-87just a memory. The Class of 8 7 has graduated and is on its way to ,bigger and better things: college, jobs, marriage. Each year, our best wishes sincerely go out to each graduate for a life filled with happiness and success. We know they have had the educational opportunities, as well as many school social opportunities to achieve happiness and success. Now, they are on their own, to put into practice all they have learned for the past 13 years during their formal education. We send them forward into their futures, hoping they will know when and how to use their talents and knowledge. But, as with all things new and untried, the world outside can often be intimidating, leading some to run from life's challenges. Yet, there will be certain members of the Class of '87 who will decide to meet those challenges face-to-face, just as they did while in school. Will they always find the gold at the end of the rainbow? Will they all become millionaires? Will any of them aspire to the office of President of the United States? Who knows. What, exactly, is success? Only those who have met their challenges with vigor and enthusiasm really know. For it is only in experiencing set-backs and failures that one can ever taste success. By making the earnest attempt, one soon learns one's abilities. By never trying, one begins to believe one's limitations. Every one of the members of the Class of ‘87 can give the effort, every one can find success. The doors are open wide to your future. Set your goals. Give the extra effort. Assume the reponsibility for all that you do. Work — and play — with compassion in your heart. Reach for the summit, beginning with that first, intrepid step. ♦ The production of this 1987 Trojan Spirit yearbook was achieved through the efforts of many, gracious individuals and organizations, without whose assistance this edition would never have been possible. With deepest gratitude, acknowledge the following: Editor Heidi Carl, whose willingness to always give that extra effort, even when it meant risking much, has created more than a beautiful compilation of the school year; she has set an example we would all do well to follow: April Johncox, Associate Editor, without whose dedication and expertise, especially in our darkroom, has been — and continues to be — an imcomparable asset to the stajf; Lee Zimmerman, Taylor Publishing Company Representative: Taylor Publishing Company, Dallas, Texas: Ron Philbrick, The Carousel Studio of Coldwaler; Pat Green of the Homer Index; Dave Miller, for the constant interruptions of his class as we entered often to use the darkroom; Staff of Trojan Publications; Homer students and community for continually supporting us. sight unseen. — Diane M.
