Twenty two Seniors and five advisors embarked for Vail, Colorado on March 31, 1978 for a glorious nine days of fun and frolic in the snow of the Rocky Mountains. The trip held many suprises and a lot of excitement, the train trip out, the bigness of the windy city, the emptiness of Iowa and Nebraska, the thin air of Denver and finally, VAIL. A few of the Seniors found themselves with time on their hands but for those who looked there was always something to do, skiing, shopping, dancing, eating, sightseeing, sleeping, and girl or boy watching. Twenty two Seniors and five advisors returned to Homer on April 9th 1978, no broken bones but some bad burns, and some lost luggage. They may have lost their luggage, but they won’t forget their Senior Trip. 35 Class Of 78 This year’s seniors culminated their high school experience with an outdoor graduation on a windy June 4, 1978. This year's valedictorian was Sherry Anderson, while the salutatorian was Greg Barton. Graduation ceremonies were enhanced by the presence of Rev. Carl Boutilier, who spoke to the Class of 78. The afternoon also marked the end of Gerald Shaffer’s career on the Board of Education. His service will be missed. Smiling faces of all who attended assure that graduation 78 will be a fond memory for many years to come. graduates 36 Events 37 Students DREAM ON at the Jr.-Sr. prom This year's Junior-Senior prom was held at Baldwin hall in Albion College. The atmosphere at the hall was one of fun and excitement that allowed students to DREAM ON. Me and My Shadow Mystifies, Entertains. . . This year the Junior Class Thespians presented Me and my Shadow” an oriental” mystery-comedy. The play centered around the attempts of a lawyer trying to hide an oriental girl from his wife. The lawyer has saved the girls life and an oriental custom says that the girl must pledge her life to him. With the help of his friend, the doctor, he manages to keep her from his wife and help to save her from the evil Sabu a visiting psychic, who tries to kill her. The doctor saves her from being shot and the girl pledges her life to the doctor. It was a very enjoyable well presented play. CAST OF CHARACTERS Roy Harrington Arleen Harrinton Susan Fischer . The Homecoming dance band was a group called Keystone who received a favorable crowd reaction. The student council sponsored several light shows by Northern Lights throughout the year. And of course we had the old stand by dee |ays Pete Owens, Scott Westerman and Jeff Smith from WVIC and we had some new faces from WJIM and WJOX. Assembly wise, music and drama was presented by the Campus Life Sound Image Edition. Also the Camden Frontier High School choir put on an excellent performance. 45 The High School stage took on the scenes of dog-patch this year, when the Homer music department presented'Lil Abner. The play was mainly concerned with Daisy Mae's attempt to get Abner to marry her. But he resists. Then the government tells the dogpatches that they live in the most worthless place of all and that the town will be bombed. Daisy and Abner show that although it’s unnecessary it's Home Sweet Home. So Abner goes to Washington after the discovery of Yokumberry Tonic to try and save the town, but the townspeople discover that there is a plot to kill Abner, so they all go to Washington. Abner is saved from General Bullmoose. Abner and Daisy are wed and they all live happily ever after. 47 Cheerleaders spark return of school spirit Freshman Cheerleaders: Debbie Duff, Karen Evans, Julie Grant. For instance the National Honor Society Picture which again caused Problems. The problem being that after we took the picture and mailed the film we never saw it again. There were a few minor problems with some misplaced class pictures and production delays but aside from that everything went smoothly. A reduction in the amount of money received in advertising sales caused us to cut back our page amounts bwt we are slowly coming to our feet financially. We of the Yearbook staff would like to thank the faculty and administration who gave us their cooperation throughout the year. Mr. Zimmer man of Taylor Publishing who was always willing to lend a hand, and the photographers from Powell Studios who furnished us with many of the excellent pictures found in the book, particularly to Mr Rod Gleason and Dave Breen. And a very, very special thanks to our Advisor Mr. Dwyer who always gave us help and encouragement when ever we needed it which was quite often. 1) Lon McArthy takes a break from her year book duties: Lori moved at Mid-semester but helped us the first part of the year. 2) Mr Dwyer and Roseanna Bloddgett look over a layout. 3) Marcella Richardson and Mike Spradlin try to resolve a problem with a picture schedule. 4) Rosanna tries to figure out a camera. 60 1 Vocational students are well prepared for world of work 1) Back row. This marks my fifth and final year as a member of the Trojan Staff. Every year when the yearbooks arrived I often received complaints about the yearbook. Last year the criticism seemed largely out of proportion as the quality of the year book became front page news at the local paper. When I was in the eightn or ninth grade that kind of criticism would have bothered me but apparently I have mellowed with age and that critism doesn’t bother me anymore for I realize that most complaints received about the yearbook are irrational, uninformed and misconstrued. However, it seems that people are always finding something to nit-pick about so in an effort to provide a little piece of mind to future editors and staffs, on this editor's page, I will explain exactly how a yearbook is produced. The first job is deciding how many pages to put in the book. This is a job in itself. How many pages should be given to this? Is the Senior class going to require more space? Less? Can we fit the freshman on four pages? Is there going to be a special event this year? All these facets must be carefully examined, because as the pages are added on the price goes up and up and up. Next we decide exactly how we want each page to look, called a layout. There are rules that must be followed when designing a layout. The margin between pictures must be constant, the pictures must be centerspread, the copy must be justified in margins, type size must be decided on and we must choose a heading style. It is a painstakingly slow process. Next pictures must be taken. This is where every staff in the country runs in to ninety percent of its problems, pictures. We get the service of professional photographers through Powell Studios free of change. Also we take some of our own But you must realize, photographers are human whether they are pro or amatuer, they make mistakes. Perhaps the film wasn't wound all the way up on the reel and you don't have a picture when you thought you did. Maybe its under exposed, or there’s not enough contrast, all this must be taken into consideration. Of all the pictures we take each year only about thirty-five percent are usable. Also we run into problems with processing and lost or stolen prints. It happens a lot and there isn't much you can do about it unless there is enough time to reschedule the picture taking and most of the time there isn't. After the pictures are taken they are cropped and laid out. The copy must be written, edited, proofread, typed, proofread, corrected, and proofread again. Now beleive it or not after all that a mistake can still slip through our fingers but we try to catch them all. Then we decide if we want any special effects, mezzotints, screens, spot color, block color, reversed type, half tone, duo tone, ghost print, collage, overburn, art conversion or any of the other zillion and one special effects that can be used. Finally the yearbook is packed up and sent in to Dallas Texas where it is printed. But it's not over yet. Taylor Publishing can also run into delays. But they usually do a great job. Now it comes time to thank a few people; Jackie McGlure and Rod Gleason of Powells and my staff Johnny, Jeff, Nan, Marcella, and Roseanna. And last but certainly not least Mr. Dwyer who is the best advisor any staff would hope for. So here is the 1978 edition of the Trojan. Enjoy it. — z — Peace. Mike. 167 I would like to take this opportunity to thank this year’s yearbook staff — Marcella, for typing; johnny, for advertising; Jeff, for always working; Nan for hardly ever working; Rosanna, for taking pictures some of which even came out; and my editor Mike, for doing everything necessary, and many more things that were not. I'm lucky to have had the chance to work with all of you. ft
