The burgeoning of science and technology and the unlocking of the secrets of atomic energy are traced to education. Our national strength depends mainly upon human resources and education is the most important means of making the most of these same resources. We are living in this age and may we get the most out of it by becoming educated and thereby becoming a valuable part of this era. Harry B. SENIORS' THIRTEEN YEARS TOGETHER T Krfi iectf t6e The scene is on the Good Ship Lollypop in the harbor of Timbucktoo. The year is 1985. Coming down the gangplank is that famous private detective, Marilyn Holmes, better known as Have Eye, Will Spy. Her latest assignment has been to look up the graduation class of 1960 from Homer High School. She bids farewell to Bill Cady who is the captain of the Good Ship Lollypop and the crew that consists of Navigation - Jim Suszko, Radio man - Dick Roepke, and Social Director - Kathy Bradley, who are all graduates of 1960. Private-Eye Holmes is on her way to report to her present employer, the famous Doctor Jeanette Butler, who has just finished her latest experiment, a cure for the giggles. As we look at the report made by Private-Eye Holmes we see that Betty Leatherman is a missionary working in Hollywood reforming the Movie Stars. Her latest reformed star is Dick Butters, who took the leading part in the great movie, Trapeze. In Studio One Alvin Kempton has taken over Alvin the chipmunk's place and is now working with Theodore and Simon on their next record, Wake up, Alvin ! As we read on, we find that Jackie Lape is now running a diet salon. We read that Dick Fogel is head Baseball coach at Yale University. One of his most valuable players is Carl Balyeat, who was voted the year's most valuable player. On the sidelines we see that famous oil Millionaire, Kent Rosenau. We see from the manuscript that in Battle Creek, Michigan, Louis Zoeller is now employed at Kellogg's, popping corn for Sugar Corn Pops. In Kalamazoo Fred Rivera has replaced Huckle Berry Hound on TV. Phyllis Foley, a nurse, is gallantly administering to the needs of the maimed, the blind, the sick and the dying in a cat and dog hospital. Jack Thurston is now head man at the John Deere Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We read on to find that Nancy Smith and Ross Gottshall have finally given up fighting and are going into business together making dog houses. Let's hope that Ross stays out of the dog house. Private Eye Holmes found in the weekly paper, published by Bill Norton, that Sharon Ambler has replaced Ann Landers, and is writing an advice column for lovers. In the paper there was an article that Larry Thurston, with a sensational new clown act has joined the Bradley and Craven Circus, owned and operated by Shirley Bradley and Charles Craven. Reading on in the manuscript, we find that Dennis Brooks now owns his own gas station, the big Standard Station in Junction Flats, Kentucky. Down the road from Brooks Standard Station, we find die race track. Racing around the track in his midget racer is Dick Simmons who won last year's famous ten dollar race. As we read on we find that Margaret Schau is now modeling dresses for Connelly's in Tennessee, owned by Jeanne Connelly. The dresses were designed by that famous Paris designer, Mademoiselle Rose Daniels. As you probably read last year. Rose took the designers medal for having designed the best dresses throughout the last ten years. As the manuscript continues we read that Jim Boyd is now teaching Physics at Bradenton High School in Florida. He is working on Current Electricity now with his class. Let's hope he figures « out. Also teaching in Bradenton High we find Mary Mierman teaching Gym. She is now teaching her class judo. We hope no bones get broken. On the fifth page of the manuscript we read that Richard Coffman now owns a big wheat farm in Iowa. His neighbor, who owns a cattle ranch, is that well known Carol Betz who raises beef for Campbell's Beef Soup. Carol has a great crew that works for her. The crew consists of roundup man - Joe Willaert, feeder - Nicholas Young, and butcher - Butch Lons. As we continue on we find that Mary Heselschwerdt is painting billboard pictures along the turnpikes. Stan Swope is a life guard on the beach of California. He has made the record of saving a person a day. Kathleen McCullough, who joined the Waves after graduation, is now Commanding Officer in Nevada. We see that Barbara Landis has set up her own Dance Band. While she plays the accordion, Ronnie Tuck plays the cornet, Joyce Ann O'Dell plays the saxophone and John Michael plays the trombone. Together they make great harmony. We find that Leila Gordon is now manager and owner of the Great Gordon Bowling Alleys. Lana Mains is now secretary to Charles Gibson, who took over Sam Rayburn's job as Speaker of die House. Richard Loomis is now ambassador to Mexico where he uses his fine Spanish that he learned from H.H. S. Jane Wagoner is selling Fuller Brushes now from house to house. x£ f$60 On the sixth page of the report we read that Sandy Bitz owns her own beauty shop in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sitting in the chair to get her hair fixed is that famous policewoman, Sarah Melville. She has just gone off duty at the Ohio State Penitentiary where Lynn Smith has been working regularly as warden. There, officiating as matron, is Josie Nichols. Reading on we see that John Cole and Benny Wilson are now running a Sporting Goods Store. One of their frequent customers is Calvin Lons who is a great fisherman on the West Coast. In New York we read that the famous Sprague, O'Dell, and Reed Skating Rink has opened again for another season. This is owned and operated by Judy Sprague, Joyce Elaine O'Dell and Dorothy Reed. Skating around the rink is the well-known figure skater. Betty Densmore. We read on to find that John Shillings now owns the famous Waldorf Hotel in New York. In the Hotel lobby we find Maria Rivera as the hat check girl. The personnel of the Kitchen consists of cook - Lloyd Swafford, pot and pan washer - Audrey Kirkbride, and head waiter - Bill Wilson. Farther on in the manuscript, we see that Mary Mills owns a Dude ranch in Arizona and her foreman is Rol-land Coppes. They take dally rides with their guests. There on vacation we see Linda Long, who is a matron for an orphanage in Boston, Sherry Nelson, who is a famous baton twirling teacher in Ohio, and Pat Kellogg, who works for the well known Smith Travel Agency owned by Judy Smith. On the last page of the manuscript we read that Joan Young is a famous lion tamer in the heart of Africa. The hardest to find on die 1960 graduation class was Inez Watson, who is now the famous explorer who has been on an expedition to the North Pole. This completes our search for the graduates of 1960. 60 Phyllis Foley y Mary Sherman In the fall of 1956, one hundred and six bewildered students entered the halls of Homer High to start their long journey through high school. From this large group the following were chosen as class officers: Kent Rose-nau, President; John Shilling, Vice President; Lana Mains, Secretary; and Bill Wilson, Treasurer. We were represented in the Student Council by Jane Wagoner and Joan Young and in the Junic Red Cross by Sherry Nelson and Jim Boyd. Dick Simmons and Phyllis Foley were our King and Queen candidates at our first Homecoming. At the annual Freshman Initiation we were introduced to the new life of high school by the sophomores with the usual lipstick, perfume, etc. To advise us through our first year, we selected Mrs. Hart and Mrs. Arnold as our class sponsors. In September of 1957, we re-entered the halls of Homer High with ninety eager students. We elected James Suszko to lead our class with Linda Long as Vice President, Pat Kellogg as Secretary, and Maria Rivera as Treasurer. Our Student Council representatives were Judy Smith and John Shilling, and our Junior Red Cross representatives were Sherry Nelson and John Shilling. This year we favored Mrs. Whitney and Mr. Curry as our class advisors and chose to retain them for the remainder of our high school days. Once again Homecoming was here and this time our choice for King and Queen candidates were Kent Rosenau and Joyce Ann O’Dell. This year during Freshman Initiation the tables turned with the newcomers getting a once over. At Christmas time we sponsored our first dance, die Holiday Hop, which was held in the Lillian Fletcher School and was a great success. Our Junior year began in the fall of 1958, with an enrollment of eighty-one students. Immediately we elected class officers, they were as follows; President, Willie Yeager; Vice President, Phyllis Foley; Secretary. Rose Daniels; Treasurer. Pat Kellogg. When Willie Yeager moved to Litchfield, Phyllis Foley was promoted to President and Kathie Bradley was elected as Vice President. We were represented in die Student Council by Judy Smith and Ross Gottshall. Joan Young, Student Council Secretary, also represented our class. After waiting impatiently all summer, we finally received our class rings at the beginning of our Junior year. Deciding to get away from the last minute rush in our Senior year, we chose our class colors, motto, and flower at this time. At Homecoming the Class of '60 was represented in the King and Queen courts by Lloyd Swafford and Kathie Bradley. November of our Junior year brought the season where the procedures were reversed and the girls took the initiative and chose a partner for the Sadie Hawkins Dance. We will always remember the hours spent making pigs, cows, horses, chickens, and Hillbilly shacks, which were used for decoration at the dance. The biggest project of the year was sponsoring the annual Junior and Senior Banquet and Prom. For i.ts success, credit should be given to our mothers who prepared a delicious meal, and the boys who created a realistic water fall which added emphasis to our theme, Hawaiian Paradise. Before we knew it our Senior year was here, and seventy-six students returned to complete their high school education. To lead us through our final year we elected the following officers: Phyllis Foley, President; Maria Rivera, Vice President; Sarah Melville, Secretary; and Pat Kellogg, Treasurer. Nancy Smith and Ron Tuck represented our class in the Student Council; and the student body chose Joan Young as President and Judy Smith as Vice President. Our King and Queen candidates were Bill Wilson and Phyllis Foley, and Bill had the honor of reigning over the Homecoming Dance which we sponsored. Some of the special events during the year were die magazine sales in which Pat Kellogg was top saleswoman. and die Senior pictures which we will always treasure. At this time we also planned our Senior Trip to Washington, D.C. and New York which occurred June first through June fifth. During the busy month of May die Alumni Association and the Junior Class honored us at their banquets. Both evenings were very enjoyable. Class honors went to Joan Young, Valedictorian; Nancy Smith, Salutatorian; and Kathie Bradley, D. A.R. Good Citizen. Those participating in extracurricular activities should also be recognized. They are: The three cheerleaders, who aroused school spirit; the seventeen lettermen, who were active in various sports; and the band members, who showed their talents in the music field. For the help we received with our many tasks we would like to express our thanks to parents, teachers, and advisors. We were now confronted with the night of Commencement, and receiving our long awaited diplomas. With our journey at its end we will travel our separate ways with the memories of our happy days in high school and the knowledge that we have acquired through the years. I960 (ZCcua ‘P e K by Kathie Bradley We look down die halls of Homer High these are the halls of our past. In them we have had joys and sorrows and formed memories that will last. Our memories are of the football games basketball, baseball, and sack And of course we'll remember our athletes that usually brought victories back. We'll always remember our teachers so willing to lend us a hand And our kind and loving parents who always could understand. When years have gone by and we find ourselves atraveling our separate ways. We'll remember our friends and teachers of our wonderful high school days. Now our studies and snuggles have ended and our goal is at last drawing nigh. In our hearts forever well treasure our memories of old Homer High. Sony (1) The class of 1960, will leave dear Homer High Our lives have been filled with memories of the wonderful days gone by Remember all the friends we've made they’ll never leave our heart And of course the wonderful teachers who helped us from the start (2) Remember all the sports and whenever things went wrong The band would raise our spirits when they played our school song We’ll ne’er forget our Junior Prom with the palm trees, waterfalls, and leis It is surely one of the bright spots in our dear old High school days REFRAIN: The motto of our class so true we sing it now to you Every task, big or small, we do it well or not at all Every task, big or small, we do it well or not at all.
