C I-IIGHLUND Supenntendent SUPERIN'I'ENDENT'S MESSAGE Four hundred years before the Christian era, Pericles, the noblest of Athemans addressed his counn'y men thus: Fix your eyes upon the greatness of your coxmtry and remember that her greamess was won by men of coinage, wxth knowledge of their duty, and with a sense of honor rn action, The pressures and dilemmas of this H Bomb age have forced the American people to fix their eyes upon defense and survival, rather than upon progress, and the greatness of the American spxrit has become diluted by the greamess of our fear 'I'he Amencan way of life calls for an enlightened people and an xnformed and literate socrety What should this mean m the thinldng and planmng of the future citizens of Homer? It seems to me that it should mean a more determined effort on the part of the adults to see that their children have The Homer High School has this year been accepted mto the highest accreditmg agency, the North Central Amociation. This means that according to the evaluation of unbiased professional visitors, your hlgh school rates with the best nn the nineteen North Central States. There rs much yet to be desired in facilities, curriculum, faculty and achievement. It should be the desire of all our cuizens to mamtain and :mp-ove our standards. It rs a well known fact that what people really want they seem to be able to get and afford, The best schools are never cheap and me poorer schools are almost always cheap. The question faces all of us How willing are we to see that our children have as good an education al opportunity as 18 possible for us to create for them? I, for one would never care to be classed among those who by their sayings and actions, clazm or admit that our children are inferior and therefore xt rs not necessary to prov1de the best in education for them. I urge your continued interest, participation, evaluauon and support. Smcerely, E. C Hxghlund, Supt. The year began with the tradrtxonal Freshman mtrtratron, conszstmg of a day of homage to the Sophomore class, com peutrve games between the two classes on the football field, and the evemng festivztres, the snake dance through town and endmg with the actual mrnauon rn the study hall We were revived afterwards w1t.h refreshments furmshed by the Sophomores. Now, officraly Semor I-hgh students, our thoughts were turned to studres and class projects The class projects brought us money toward the Semor Tnp, taught us to take responsrbrlrty and gave us the opportumty of worlung together That year the Student Council sponsored a new rdea of a school talent assembly g1ven by each class The project was recerved wrth shyness at first but the class put its efform together to present a humorous concepnon of a radro broadcast, Progressing to the Sophomore Class we gamed new responsrbrhtles, We passed our Freshman trtle on to a new class and lmnated them mto their new statron. For an all school actrvrty, we departed a httle from tradrtron and sponsored a skatrng party rnstead of the usual Sophomore dance We went on wrth our projects for the Semor tnp by havmg a scrap dnve and other activmes, We began our thrrd year of hrgh school by choosrng and ordenng class rings. In December we presented our junior Play, Belles on Therr Toes. It was a success, but more than that we enjoyed gettmg rt ready and presentrng it to the puhlzc In the fall we sponsored Twrrp Season and clrmaxed rt with the Sadxe Hawlnns Dance We advertised As jumors we gave the tradxtronal banquet and prom for the Semors. We had fun carryrng out the nantlcal theme and pamtmg wierd forms of Manne lrfe for Neptunes Ballroom, Our mothers gave us much assltance rn preparing and serving the banquet, Before we knew rt three years had flown by and we were the Semor Class of '55 School started rn a whirl of projects We added to the frmds rn our treasmy by a magazme sale, followed by a Chrrstmas card and wrap p1ng paper sale Concessrons at football games and basketball games helped. At class meetmgs we selected cadet blue gowns for graduation, and chose the class colors, flower, and motto Cold weather soon came and wlth rt football, produclng another undefeated season for the Trojans. The Semors shared 1n the school pnde over thxs record, as ten Semor boys played on the team. All too soon football season was drawrng to an end as we made preparatxons for Homecommg. Floats paraded the football freld at half trme and we sponsored a Homecomrng dance Somethmg new was added dunng the wmter We could now turn the radro to the Albxon statnon on Sunday mormng and hear the Senrors representrng Homer I-hgh ln May we were thnlled to fmd ourselves rn the brg cxty of New York.
