These two are Mildred Donnelly and Lewis Stockton. As these two advanced through the grades, they saw many changes, as former pupils moved away and new ones came in. During the third year they wee ioined by Phyllis Potts, and in the fourth grade Beverly Cooper and Marian Baugous were added. In the fifth the number was increased by two when Peggy Russell and Hallene Anderson entered our school. Jim Nelsen and Richard Lund added two more in the seventh grade and Sandra Nelson joined us in the eighth grade. The class received its greatest increase in the ninth year when eight Freshmen entered from our country schools. These were Joan Pedersen, Mariorie Jacobsen, Betty Georgesen, Mary O'Connor, Albert Byrood, Paul Bielenberg, Pete Jorgensen, and Dan Johnsen, Near the close of this year we lost Sandra Nelson who moved to the State of Washington. Mr. Slosson was our sponsor during this year. The outstanding event was our initiation. At the start of the sophomore year our number remained the same, as Pauline Anderson ioined us, replacing Paul Bielenberg, who had moved from our community after completing the ninth grade. Mrs. Doran was our class sponsor. During the year we put on a couple of skits and discovered that our class contained promising play material. 7 During our junior year our class number was increased when Norma Heath entered. The class sponsor was Miss lrle. Our class play, Aunt Somathy Rules the Roost , was a huge success, and a number of the class displayed real talent. We held the banquet for the seniors at the Mayfair Hotel in Sioux City. During this year we had the privilege of participating in County Government Day fwith other juniors of the county schoolsl in the Dakota County Courthouse at Dakota City. ln the spring the senior class and we were guests of Mrs. Doran at o picnic in Stone Park. We entered our senior year with a roll call of sixteen, two of our members, Beverly Cooper and Phyllis Potts, having left our ranks. Mrs. Doran is our sponsor. We elected Jim Nelsen class president, Mary O'Connor vice-president, and Hallene Anderson secretary and treasurer. The first semester was a busy season with our studies, athletics, and various schemes for raising money for our Sneak Day. ln the fall, we, as well as other Senior Classes of the county, were conducted on a soil conservation tour which was interesting and informative . We found a king and queen to rule over our Homecoming in Betty Georgesen and Dick Lund. Hallie Anderson and Jim Nelsen were their attendants. As the year went by we seniors had a carnival, our Class Play, Sneak Day, and the Junior-Senior Banquet. Now, as we say so-long to Homer High we look to the future with high hopes andideals, but we will never forget the years we spent in Homer and the good times we have had together. 8 77 E ,V fm' SQL J? ,X 1 4 1 1 . rlf, Q ,V te ff if Juniors 'UT Top, left to right: Bob Tighe, Frances Sorensen, Bob Jacobsen, Rosaline Bates, Bottom: Janice Nelsen, Rex Pigg, Dean Mongar, Claude Griffey. At that time there were only nine members. They were: Rosaline Bates, Frances Sorensen, Dean Mongar, Gary Clayton, David Nelson, Claude Griffery, John Eastman, Bob Jacobsen, and Rex Pigg. The class officers were: Rex Pigg, president, Dean Mongar, vice-president, and Rosaline Bates, secretary. The teachers that year for this class were: Mr . Weber fgeneral science one semester-world geography the otherl Mrs. Doran QEnglish, general science one semester and world geography the otherj and Mr. Slosson Qmathematicsl. The beginning of our sophomore year saw two new faces come into the scene. They were Janice Nelsen, a transfer from Winnebago, and Bob Tighe, a transfer from Heelan High. lt also saw two new teachers for our class. They were Mr. Hanson, the new coach and our world history teacher, and Miss lrle our typing teacher. Mrs. Doran was our biology and English teacher. The class officers were the some as in our freshman year. The 1953-54 school year sees us with another new pupil who transferred from Emerson. His name is LeRoy Treft. However, our small class failed to grow for John Eastman enlisted in the marines. Ouriunior year again brought some new teachers. Mr. ,Strasburg replaced Mr. Slosson as the school superintendent. Miss lrle is no longer with us and in her place is Mrs. Wagner who teaches us bookkeeping and shorthand. Our other subiects are: American literature taught by Mrs. Doran, American problems taught by Mr. Hanson, and shop for the boys also taught by Mr. Hanson. We put on a class play entitled Hillbilly Courtship which was a success for we made quite a bit of money and did not do too bad a iob of acting. We are trying to raise money for the Junior-Senior banquet. Our class officers are: David Nelson , president, Rex Pigg, vice-president, Rosaline Bates, secretary and Dean Mongar, Student Council. Mr. Hansen, who was our first sponsor, had to put up with twenty-one of us. The first item on our agenda was election of officers, and Melvin Lauritsen, president, Rita King, vice- presidentp Marilyn Young, secretary, and Rodney Longwell, treasurer, emerged victorious. The fifth Friday after the beginning of school, we freshmen faced our doom. We were forced to submit to initiation and Kangaroo Court, which was enioyed by everyone but us freshmen. By this time football was well under way. The strong muscle men from our class who participated were Allan Jensen, Larry Jacobsen, Modris lakstins, Donald Baugous, Rodney Longwell, Melvin Lauritsen, Francis Cain, and Robert Krumwiede. The basketball season followed football and again Robert Krumwiede, Melvin Lauritsen, Larrylboobsen, Allen Jensen, Donald Baugous, Modris Lalcstins, and Rodney Longwell went bravely forward. The only class activity for our freshman year was a trip over to the Sioux City Public Library and Museum, and a picnic supper in Stone Park which was financed by our ignorance. You see, during English we paid one cent for each error in speech and we used this fund for the food for our picnic. Boyl Did we eatl We began our sophomore year with poor Mr. Hansen once more doomed to be our sponsor, but fate was good to him and he had only sixteen of us to put up with. Class officers were elected as follows: Melvin Lauritsen, president, John Punches, vice-president, Gary Honsen, secretary, and Donald Baugous, treasurer. Only one of the sweet sophomore girls, Betty Wilke, had the opportunity of being chosen cheerleader, but she did such a good iob that we are all proud of her. Our entertainment for this year was a trip to Sioux City to a movie, also a hayride and wiener roast which was a great success. It is customary to end the year with a schobl picnic, and needless to say, where there's food, there's sophomores. I3 unq- M4 1 .4399 . , , S, ....,,,. . ,. .. ., S 'A'V X ' iziyy-Tw? Fifteen scared, green freshmen came walking up Homer High steps. Of course the first day is the worst day because you don't know what's going to happen The tint day we were told what subiects and teachers we were going to have in each class. We elected our class officers which are the following: president-John Longwellp vice pesident Keith Rosep and secretcry-Mylet McFarlin. We elected one member to the Student Council which was Duane Evans but since they fthe twinsj moved, Nancy Harris has taken his place. The freshman class sponsor is Mrs. Wagner. On the Friday of the fourth week we faced lnitiation in the aftemoon by the iuniors and Kangaroo Court in the evening by the seniors, A dance followed initiation exercises which was a lot more fun than the initiation exercises. Next around the corner was our Halloween party. At this we had a scavenger hunt. In the last part of January we gave Dwight and Duane Evans a skating party and afterwards we had a wiener roast. ln the spring of the year we plan to go to Sioux City and spend the dues we have collected in English class for our poor speech. We hope our sophomore year will be as successful as our freshman year. 15 Top row, left to right: R. Wiseman, R. Lee, T. Nelson, D. Harris, W. Biede, M. McManigal, S. Bates, S. Roplten, E. About mid tenn we lost two students, Ten'y Garner and Vernon McAfee. On March first Tfimmy Nelson ioined our first grade group and our enrollment now stands at thirty-two. We have had many interesting activities in our room but we have especially enioyed our outside excursion trips. We have visited our local library and post office as well as numerous trips around town looking for Nature study specimens At the beginning of the school year we decided that in order to be happy students we must work in a pleasingly decorated room and an attractive room has been our years'proiect. We have always tried to have a good bulletin board display so that visitors to our room might see at a glance our present proiects. Back row, left to right: A. Holgate, R. Brodorsen, T. Young, F. Each student made his own character puppet and clothed him. Another successful project was the making of covered wagons for the Dakota County Teachers Association dinner which was held at Homer, Janixary 25th. Our covered wagons served as nut cups at the dinner. Back row, left to right: Mrs. Pigg, E. Johnson, B. Kraft, P. Winch, D. Wilke, K. Johnsen, D. Morgan, B. Riley, D. Donnelly, J. Mongor, A. Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grades We have, this year, combined the sixth, seventh and eighth grades md so have a total of twenty-one students. Throughout the year we have participated in many activities. Our Halloween costume pcrty was enioyed by everyone. The committees provided qapropriate Holloween games, decorations and lunch. At Christmas-time, along with the third, fourth, and fifth grades, we presented a portion of the Christmas progrcn Our Christmas party was observed by an exchange of gifts an d treats. One of the most interesting proiects of the year was the making of Christmas decorations. Centerpieces for our mothers were made of logs to hold candles. Our fathers were treated to homemade fudge. In May we presented a program in honor of our mothers. Each mother was presented with a carnation. Our boys have enioyed basketball this year tdcing part in their toumament at Dakota City. Our room has greatly missed Judy McManigal who has had to miss the year of schooling because of ilTness, We hope she will be able to reioin us this fall. The iuniors forced the green freshmen to wear everything from bathing suits to baby clothes. ln the evening, the seniors made life even more miserable at Kangaroo Court which was followed by a dance and refreshments, compliments of the sophomores. The next big event was a Halloween- Puffy sponsored by the seniors. This consisted of dancing and refreshments, which everyone enioyed. We also celebrated Christmas with a dance following the Christmas Program. The Student Council made sure Valentines Day was not forgotten. The parade of social activities comes to an end with the two most awaited events. The fireman's annual Athletic Banquet held on April l3 awarded adeserving senior the honor of outstanding athlete ofthe year. The Junior-Senior Banquet on April 24 proved worthy of the anticipation also. The iuniors certainly showed the seniors a good time at this fonnal event. The coronation began at eight o'clock p.m., November ninth. The queen, Betty Georgesen, and the king, Ri chad Lund, were attired in scarlet robes lined with white satin. Their attendants selected from each class were: Mylet McFarlin and John Longwell, freshmen, Marilyn Young and Lan'y Jacobsen, sophomores, Frances Sorerieh and Robert Tighe, iuniors, and Halflfene Anderson and James Nelsen, seniors. A processional played by Nancy Harris accompanied the royalty to the throne. A welcoming address was given by Superintendent William Strausburg to the faculty, alumni, and friends. He then placed the crowns on the heads of our new queen and king of l953. After the coronation, the royalty and their attendants started the dance to a beautiful waltz played by Zean Zurcher's Orchestra. Later in the evening the dance floor was transformed into a lovely rainbow of beautiful pastel formals. lt is no wonder this was one of the greatest Homecomings in the history of Homer High. B. B..
