HIGH SCHOOL 101 ADVERTISING THE WAY WE WERE ... In 1885, the horse and buggy was the order of the day. In fact, during this year the world’s first successful gasoline-driven motor vehicle reached a speed of 9 miles per hour. Grover Cleveland was the President and no world wars had yet become a part of history. The first successful U.S. appendectomy was performed in Iowa, and an identification system based on fingerprints was developed by Francis Galton. Galton proved that fingerprints are permanent and that no two prints are identical. Morton salt was introduced into the market, along with evaporated milk. 1984-85 will be noted in history books as the year of the first Presidentail election which included a woman as a vice- presidential nominee. It was also the year of the Olympics. The U.S. team will be remembered by the spectacular performances of Mary Lou Retton, Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, the men’s gymnastic team, and many others. In sports, the 49’ers beat the Dolphins 38-16 to capture the NFL Superbowl XIX. 1984-85 will also be remembered by the heart transplant of Baby Fae, the rape case of Gary Dotson and Catherine Crowell Webb, and the famine in Ethiopia. Locally, it will be remembered by the new IGA and the disastrous tornado. It was the year of Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, USA for Africa, and the new formula for Coke. All in all, a very good year! 1885 3 1985 The present High School built in 1928. THE EARLY Original Homer High School built in 1858. Site of where Homer Park stands today. After the town of old Homer had been moved to its new location, more people began to settle in and around Homer. The community grew very rapidly. By the year 1888 eleven school buildings had been built in what is now Homer Community Consolidated School District No. 208. Ten of these schools were built in the country within a radius of five to ten miles from Homer. Enrollment ran all the way from 18-50 pupils. (Excerpt taken from Homer Past and Present) In 1858 the original four room school house was built on what is now the Homer Park (Pictured above left). The first high school class graduated in 1885. In 1914 it was decided to leave the park site and lease the Jurgensmeyer building, better known as the City Building (not pictured). In 1928 the new high school was built (pictured directly left) and the grade school addition and the junior high addition were added respectively in 1954 and 1966. Throughout these changes, the growth of our school and education has constantly increased. The class of 1985 is proud to be the 100th graduating class from Homer High School. 1985 FOUNDATION There have been fads for all times — from swallowing goldfish to stuffing telephone booths and small cars. But in essence high schoolers to- day aren’t totally different from one hundred years ago. We still have the same goals. We pride ourselves in hard work, enjoy having a good time and look forward to the weekends. High Schoolers of one hundred years danced alongside the vic- trola, we rock to Rush, their dress was strict, ours is casual. One hundred years ago life may have been more refined, but surely not as varied. I came over here and first it was like a different world, be- cause everything was somehow strange, like school. It was really hard for me to get use to at first. Every day the same classes, and only three minutes between classes and almost the whole day in school! But after a while I got used to it, used to your whole life and culture. Sometimes I feel like I always lived here. I really had a great experience and all of you helped me to have a better time because all of you sen- iors, underclassmen, administra- tion, and faculty were so open, help- ful, supportive, and nice. Thanks to all of you! I also want to thank (esp. seniors and juniors) for all the great times we shared! I’m never going to forget this year or any of you!!! As an YFU exchange student, I have reached many goals that I set for this past school year 84-85. I have surely learned lots about peo- ple in Illinois and the United States. My language improved very much this year, which encouraged me very much and I got a dream that some day I could live in an English- speaking society. I also learned to love American sports and hopefully found my way to my future career, the sports edu- cation. I want to thank everybody who helped me to make my school year as good as it was. The NHS had four meetings this year. At one we prepared for our annual service project of sponsoring a blood drive. We distrib- uted posters and flyers as well as used the downtown sign to advertise. We received donations of 25 pints from students, facul- ty, and townspeople. The Champaign County Blood Bank was pleased with the response. We held our annual induction ceremonies on May 7 to induct our new members. Parents pinned the new members with the Society’s keystone. The Society also gave two scholarships of $150 each to graduat- ing seniors. Another successful year! New Members: Lisa Mashburn, Susan Allen, Ji Moore, Loriann Dillman, Lori Jones. The club began with classes selecting representatives and students running for president and vice-president. After the election of officers, the students spent the remainder of the year writing a new constitution for the organization. The council had one money-making project selling chocolate bunnies at Easter which was very successful. The election for next year’s major offices was held in May amid much electioneering with posters, flyers, and lolly”-pops. Kevin Wienke will be president and Lori Jones, vice-president. One of the highlights was our annual Christmas caroling and pifia- ta party. In January we had a tapas” lunch and the chance to prepare and taste dishes from many different Spanish provinces. The spring’s most interesting event was our Baile con Bunny” where we made brave attempts at the rumba, samba, and cha cha cha. Remember to watch her feet next time, Chicos! Preceding the spring play, we served ta- cos to kickoff our search for funds in hopes of a trip to Spain or Mexico next year. The end of the year found us eating again at our Nacho fiesta. We did manage to finish most of the generic chips (left over from our fund-raiser), and thus pronounced the year a success. 53 Photographers: Janet Collins and Brian Hardman. This was the first year that any of the players had the op- portunity to play the best 3 out of 5 games. Playing the best 3 out of 5 made volleyball much more exciting and, hopefully, will increase the spirit of the game. Junior Varsity. Bottom Row: Keli Hardman, Lori Jones, Jodi Moore, Jodi Ellis. We had our closest game against New- man. By the time we played Oak- land, we were down to fifteen play- ers. We played tough, though, and never gave up. Due to this effort, we scored against Oakland, the 8th ranked team in the state. We had to forfeit our last game against Ridgefarm due to lack of eligible players. With a remarkable improvement over last year’s 7-11 record, we ended the season with 19 victories and only 5 losses. The conference record was 7-1, which enabled the girls te finish with a second-place conference standing. The team was successful in tournament play this year. We defeated Urbana High and returned from the Paris Holiday Tournament with a third-place trophyl We also received second place in both the conference and regional tournaments. V glctitutieg BOARDGAMES PROVIDE THE THEME Sophomores win third with Monopoly” Freshmen are last with Risk’ This year’s Homecoming was full of excitement. The celebration started on Monday and continued throughout the week. Hallways were brightly decorated and floats creatively built. Some classes broke the tradition by beginning work on the floats early. The theme was Board Games and every class gave it their all. School was dismissed Friday afternoon at 1:30 for the pep assembly. The classes, cheerleaders and faculty all performed spirited skits. The Freshmen made suckers” of the Seniors; the Sophomores have a lesson in dressing up-, the Juniors told us what they would be if they weren’t from H.H.S.”; and the Seniors showed everyone how teamwork could help us win. Mr. Knauer demonstrated a typical” Monday morning at H.H.S. And the teachers took us on a trip to Victoryland. With laughing and yelling, spirits were high as we were dismissed for the parade. However, spirits were not dampened for the dance Saturday night. F G Lighting and Sound provided a DJ and decorative lights. At 11:00, in the darkness, coronation began. Brian announced that the 1984 Homecoming Queen and King, chosen by the student body, were Brenda and Shane. The Queen and King, their court, and attendants danced to Precious and Few”. The play represents what oc- curs when a new teacher decides to deviate from the norm of musicals, which are a tradition and instead present excerpts from Shakespeare. The macho student leader at- tempts to undermine the teacher by coercing his classmates to quit. After involving the principal, par- ents (one of whom believes his son is out for sports), and the basketball coach, all is well when the remain- der of the cast convince the macho leader they plan to be in the play. I, BRIDGIT DABLE, being of underdeveloped body and perverted mind, will to Pat Lewis the biggest spotlight ever made. Have you got caught lately, Wiener? I, LORIANN DILLMAN, being of so-so body and partying mind, do hereby will to Crystal Dawson the ability to act like a girl without worrying about what other people will think. I, BRENDA FREEMAN, being of sometimes sound mind and body, will to Homer High School a bronzed life-size statue of Brian Hardman so that nobody will forget his macho image — sorry, Brianl I also bequeath Valerie P. and Jodi M. more fun times at the movies. I, MONTE GRITTEN, being of a sexually infested and awesome male mind and unquestionable body, do hereby will my geometry class the ability to have a discussion without me being there to start it, and also will the ability for all ladies, including Mrs. Kerr, to learn their duties well (and the men always to remind them). Hang in there, Mike! I, MARIA GRUBB, being of innocent mind and body, will to Mark Do-no-ho a pair of gloves to keep his hands warm and to Captain Kerr” 2 leashesj one to keep Buttons and Bows” under control and one to keep her computer students in the right classroom (keep up that tight ship. I, JAN KIEST, being of short body and so so mind, will to 2 certain freshmen the ability not to judge people. To Pat Lewis the ability to have more fun in the future with yours and everyone elses friends! I, CHRISTINE MUELLER, being of short body and foreign mind, will to Jody Rushing common sense and the ability to shut up in class. I, JIM NICKELSON, being of willing mind and capable body, will my mile run to Aaron Ketchunv, to Keith Wolf I will a teddy bear for all those lonely nights ahead of him; to Pat Pruitt goes a passport to Canada so next time he’ll make it. To my sister I will my ability in English. I, CAMI NORCROSS, being of unstable mind and body, will Mark Donoho the ability to remember how he keeps his hands warm (maybe someday I’ll tell you) and to Gigi and Lori I will the ability not to let people at HHS get them down! I, MARLA STURDYVIN, being of my own mind and sawed-off body, will to the majority of the sophomore girls the ability to act like yourself whether on a one-to-one basis or in a crowd.
