In place of the marching band, pep band per- formed at the home football games. Miss Buckles and the Marching Panthers hope that next year there will be enough members to march so that they can once again take the field at halftime. 42 Row 1: Miss Buckles; Director, Jamie Krukewitt, Jami Moore, Bonnie Warters, LeAnn Bear, Abbey Orwick. CONCERT BAND This year, because there was no march- ing band, the pep band, performed at the football games as well as at the basketball games. The highlight of this year’s pep band season was at the last home basket- ball game on Valentine’s Day. The pep band played a variety of love songs on kazoos. This year, with the help of several new songs and the purchase of new pep band T-shirts, the pep band was much en- joyed by the fans at the games. The concert band performed at two con- certs this year — one at Christmas and one in May. Also performing at both the Jr. High graduation and at the High School graduation, concert band enjoyed a very successful year. Pep Band 43 CHOROS The 1983-84 chorus included both junior high and high school students, and we had a very successful year. The chorus as a whole did not attend contest, but several members participated in solo and ensemble contest, and many received First-place ratings. Chorus performed at both the Christmas Concert and at the Spring Concert. We also performed at both the Grade School and High School graduation. Chorus Officers: Sitting: Lori Jones. The High School ensemble started the year by visiting the Champaign County Nursing Home and singing a variety of Christmas Carols to the elderly. Both en- sembles participated in the Christmas Con- cert and at contest where they both re- ceived First-place ratings. The ensembles ended their year by singing in the Spring Concert, at both graduations, and at the Alumni Banquet. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY National Honor Society has a total of 16 members. We began the year with ten members and six more were sashed in January. The formal induc- tion ceremony was held early in May. The induction was held in the even- ing so parents of the new members could attend. The NHS sponsored two blood drives in co-operation with the Cham- paign County Blood Bank. The drive in December was for the benefit of a junior high student who was to un- dergo open-heart surgery. We collect- ed a total of 54 pints of blood in the two drives. The Society is also awarding two $150 scholarships to this year’s graduating class. Sustaining Members: Jamie Krukewitt, Jacinda Wooters. Theresa Clark, Kathy Bange, Brenda Freeman, Janet Collins. Row 2: Mrs. Kerr. Steve Messman, Perry Dable, Kerry Wienke, Thad Bales. On June 6, 1983, twelve girls left for a 10-day trip to Mexico City and Puerto Val- larta. The girls were accompanied by Sra. Best and Mrs. Robison. The school bus left Homer at 2 a.m. to go to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport for our plane to Mexico City! We were taken to many of Mexico City’s greatest attractions by our “fine” tour guide, Nora! After walk- ing over the largest part of Mexico City, we left for four days of peace and beach at Puerto Vallarta. We spent most of our time there either in the pool or on the beach. One day we took a cruise to a nearby fishing village called Yalopa. We all had a really great time and want to give a big thanks to Sra. Best, Mrs. Robison, and all the people who supported us in our fund-raising activities. Superintendent Marvin Mason Principal Ed Melchi ADMINISTRATION Row 1: Chuck Krukewitt. Troy Preston. There was a lot of spirit during homecoming week; Tuesday was scum day, and sign t-shirt day; Wednesday was dress up day, long dresses, suits and ties; Thursday was physical day, sweat suits, head bands, etc.; and Friday was spirit day, wear maroon and gold. At the pep assembly, both the teachers and classes acted out skits. The seniors were awarded the spirit stick and first place for their hallway; sophomores, 2nd; fresh- men, 3rd; and the juniors, 4th. Following the pep assem- bly, the parade made its way through town during which time the rain ruined most of the floats. The classes all had fun anyway getting drenched! Sophomore received first on their float; juniors, 2nd; seniors, 3rd; and fresh- men, 4th. The game was postponed from Friday until Saturday, due to the rain, since no. line marks could even be made in the flooded field. Homer failed to win their second straight homecoming game with the Newman Redskins. Following the game was the dance with the band “Storm.” The theme song was “Take You into the Night.” Kerry Wienke and Kathy Carter were crowned the 1983 Homecoming King and Queen. 65 Send Her My Love 1984 Prom King and Queen, Doug Robertson and Katie Simila 66 Prom Court: Todd Stenberg, Doug Robertson, Darren Stay ton, Ja- mie Krukewitt, Theresa Clark, Katie Simila 1983-84 JR.-SR. Aunt Louise (Brenda) sniffles that her “little baby is growing up. Lights! shouts director Mrs. Woo. It’s Willoughby's practice time!” says Aunt Olga (Jamie). The giggly twins, Trudy and Janet (Keli and Debbie), argue over Willoughby. The Inner Willy demonstrates one of his many talents — juggling! 72 Everybody Is A Star The aunts inspect Willoughby after they suspect him Willoughby's Inner Self thanks Mike for taking of being sick. Marybelle to the dance. Willoughby reluctantly asks Marybelle (Loriann) to dance while the aunts watch. Kory and Thad star as the Inner Willy and Willoughby. HHS presented the spring play, “The Inner Willy,” on April 6 and 7. The cast and crew members put a lot of hard work into the preparation of the play. The play, directed by Regina Woontner and Jill Buckles, went well both nights, and the audience really enjoyed the production. “The Inner Willy is about a boy, Willoughby Adams, whose life is run by his three aunts who have raised him. Each aunt has different hopes as to what Willoughby is going to do as a future career. Willoughby, on the other hand, knows exactly what he wants to do but is afraid to tell them. Willoughby’s “Inner self,” wearing red long underwear, appears from behind the couch to help Willoughby gain the confidence he needs to live his own life. Through a series of arguments, mishaps, and much confusion, the Inner Willy helps Willoughby to refuse his cod liver oil, turnips, and piano lessons and to convince his aunts that State Tech is the school for him and to give him the courage to take Carol, the girl he loves, to the graduation dance. With this, the “Inner Willy” slowly disappears behind the couch. GRADUATION HURTS CATS The Homer Panthers had a rough 1983 season, ending up with an overall record of 1-7, with the only victory against conference foe, Ridgefarm. The loss of 8 players off last year’s 6-2 team proved too much to overcome. The record is really misleading when you consider that three of the losses were by one touchdown or less — with a touchdown here or an interception there, the Panthers could have very well ended with a 4-4 record. With only 4 seniors graduating, the Panthers hope to improve next year’s record. The highlights of the season were a victory over arch- rival ABL and a big win over Deland- Weldon. The JV's help present a good outlook to varsity football for next year. They will help to fill in for the four graduating seniors, who all manned line positions. Good luck, guys! They attended the ICF camp held at the Uni- versity of Illinois. At camp, they did very well, receiving a total of 6 ribbons for cheering skills (stunts, pyramids, and tumbling), cheer execution, cre- ativity, sparkle and shine, and a ribbon for excellence. They were also chosen as finalists in the Grand Championship com- petition and went on to win 3rd place overall. The cheerleaders generated school spirit during football season by having pep assem- blies for almost every home game. During basketball sea- son, the cheerleaders worked hard on new floor cheers and getting fans fired up for the games. With a successful team this year, the crowds at the games improved greatly, and the cheerleaders were able to promote much school spirit and pep. Row 1: Keli Hardman, Kathy Carter. Coach Gilhaus 2nd IN EOC, 15-7 OVERALL The 1983-84 Homer Panther Varsity cagers com- piled a very good 15-7 record with an 8-2 East Okaw Conference count and a 2nd place finish. This was an amazing feat when considered that only 2 of last year’s top 7 players returned and the Panthers were picked to finish last or second-to-last in the EOC. The highlights of the season were 2 wins over arch-rival ABL, a 7-0 start, and Perry Dable’s school record of 47 points against the Rankin Rangers. The Panthers will graduate starters Perry Dable, Steve Messman, and Darren Stayton and top re- serves Rich Hall and Brian Kilian. These players will be hard to replace, but with the return of Mike Bell, Kip Malinowski, and Shane Rogers, the Panthers should be very competitive next season. The JV’s were led by a trio of sophomores and a pair of juniors. This strong group of underclassmen will lend tremendous support to the 1984-85 Panther team. A freshman-sophomore team was also fielded this year, but finished 0-3 with all three being very close games. 88 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Kneeling: Mrs. Robison, Coach. They ended with a 7-11 record which was the best in recent history. There were also many close games. Hopefully, next year with the gained experience the break will go our way. Those receiving special honors were: Cindy Nickleson and Sharon Smith most assists (tie); Susan Allen, most steals and all-conference honorable mention; Jodi Krukewitt, most rebounds and 1st team all-conference; Janet Collins, best free throw percentage, most points, and 1st team all-conference. With seven returning lettermen the future looks bright for next years team. Good luck to Coach Robison and all the girls. 91 Kneeling: Guy James, Mark Donoho. BOYS’ TRACK The 1984 Panther Track team was led by a strong group of underclassmen and did an excellent job with only two upperclassmen and nine total members. The Panthers received a 5th-place trophy from the Georgetown Relays, a meet in which the boys and girls alternate legs in relays and combine their times or dis- tances in individual events. The Fresh-Soph 400 and 800 teams set new records in this meet. The Panthers received a plaque for a 2nd-place finish in the EOC JV meet and placed 3rd in the EOC Varsity meet. The relay team of Guy James, Skip James, Terry Hackney, and Rob Danner finished 4th in the 400 and 5th in the 800 at District, with the 400 time of 46.5 good enough to place them on the Danville Commercial-Mews Track Honor Roll. In Homer’s only home meet, we defeated Ridge Farm 81-36. With the Panthers losing only senior Jesse Pruitt, we should contend for the EOC title next year. The commencement exercises, held in the HHS new gym, began at 8 p.m. with the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” march played by the band. After the invocation, given by class sponsor Mrs. Robison, the salutatorian, Perry Dable, give his address — a poem that he had written. The ensemble then sang the class song “Keep on Believing.” Katerina Simila then gave her remarks on her stay with us this year and received a standing ovation. Katie then presented Mr. Mason with the Finnish flag. Ms. Regina Woontner recited a poem dedicated to the parents of the graduates and each graduate presented his her mother with a single red rose. Jamie and Jodi Krukewitt next sang a duet, “Comer of the Sky.” The valeditory address was given by Jamie Krukewitt. Mike Wakefield presented Kathy Bange and Perry Dable with American Legion awards and Mrs. Ruth Kerr awarded National Honor Society scholarships to Kathy Bange and Perry Dable. Diplomas were presented by Jerry Messman, president of the Board of Education. After diplomas were given, Perry Dable, class president, ordered the graduates to turn their tassels . . . the members of the Class of '84 were now officially graduates! Reverend Hall gave the Benediction and the Class of '84 marched proudly out of the gym with diplomas in hand.
