It may be six or seven years or twenty-two or three, But will you till I call her back, take care of her for me? She’ll bring her charm to gladden you, and should her stay be brief, You'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I’ve looked this wide world over in my search for teachers true, And from the throngs that crowd life's lane, I have selected you. Now will you give her all your love, nor think the labor vain, Nor hate me when I come to call to take her home again.” I fancied that I heard them say: Dear Lord, Thy will be done; For all the joys Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We’ll shelter her with tenderness, we’ll love her while we may, and for the happiness we have known forever grateful stay. But should the angels call for her much sooner than we’ve planned, We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand. —author unknown CLASS SONG: THEME FROM MAHOGANY CLASS FLOWER: YELLOW ROSE CLASS COLORS: MAROON GOLD I AM NOT AFRAID OF TOMORROW, FOR I HAVE SEEN YESTERDAY, AND I LOVE TODAY” Homer High School CLASS OF 1983 1. The future looks very good for the team! We credit a lot of our improvement and success to our new assistant football coach, Rob Hooker. We feel he helped our line tre- mendously. Overall, we are happy with our winning season of 6-2. Many players were voted to be on the Okaw All-Conference teams. Rex Allen and Rick Allen were selected unanimously. This year's team certainly kept the crowds on their feet as we had many close games. Al- though we did not win, there was an array of tal- ent and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team consisted of three seniors, one junior, and many sophomores and freshmen. Since we are losing only the three, the future looks promis- ing for Coach Edmiston and the team. We ended the season with a 12-12 record. The highlight of our season was when we played on T.V. against Bismark- Henning and we were victorious. In the regionals we lost a very close game to Oakwood that went down to the wire, we lost by 2 points. We all thank Coach Gilhaus for doing a very fine job. The 1982-1983 girls' bask- etball season was certainly an exciting one. Everything seemed to improve this year. The crowd became more attentive, our record improved tremendously, (with 4 Varsity wins and 2 JV wins) and our experience in working as a real team was an asset to all of our victo- ries. With the loss of only two seniors, Kris Kasper and Mary Ellis, the future looks bright for Coach Robison and all the girls. Best of luck next year and the years to come! Not pictured, Lindy Howe, Jane Carrington. ENSEMBLE The Homer High School vocal en- semble had a very successful year. The group started out by visiting the Champaign County Nursing Home and entertaining the elderly with a variety of Christmas Carols. The group’s next performance was for the Homer Exten- sion Association where they per- formed songs they had prepared for contest. At solo and ensemble contest, they received a first place rating. The ensemble finished the year by performing at the High School Spring Concert and then at graduation. 60 Officers: Julie Clem, President (sitting): Kris Kasper, Secre- tary; Brenda Freeman, Vice president CHORUS This year's chorus included junior high and high school students. The students gave a Christmas Concert for the public and for the junior high and high school students at a school assembly. One of the highlights of the concert was a song called “Jingle Bell Boogie” featuring a baritone solo by Jim Rein, as Elvis Presley. Members ac- tively participated in solo and en- semble contest and did very well. The chorus as a whole praticipated at the organizational contest at Rossville, receiving a first place rat- ing. They also performed at the an- nual Spring concert, and for graduation. The 1982-1983 chorus ended a very successful year with a trip to Six Flags. 1st Row: Miss Buckles, Angie Tester, Lori Jones, Marla Sturdyvin, Jodi Moore, Jami Moore. Sherri Short, 2nd Row. This year we saw The Swarm.” We had a good turn out and a lot of fun. We also had a student exchange with ABL High School to look at the difference in cur- riculums. Finally, we had a computer- mate dance with ABL. We had a lot of fun. Todd Carter, April Gritten, Bryon Rogers, Doyne Webb The Co-op Club consists of students en- rolled in the work-study class. Students are employed in various types of businesses— from farms to restaurants, from offices to nurseries. In April, the students hosted an apprecia- tion dinner at the Top of the Inn in the Century 21 building. They presented each employer with a plaque. The relationship between student - employees and employers is one of co- operation—one learning, one imparting knowledge—preparing the teenager for the World of Work. 67 Front to Rear. We wished to raise enough money to purchase a whirl- pool, but this goal was never reached. Hopefully, next year’s H- Club will reach this goal. 68 LIBRARY CLUB Members: Deena Napier, Teresa Hartman, Missy Raymond, Karen Brunner, Kris Kasper, Patty Carter, Mrs. Murphy, Kathy Howell. Officers: Kathy Howell, Secretary; Patty Carter, Vice- President; Kris Kasper, President; Mrs. Murphy, Sponsor. The Library Club has been working very hard this year putting the new and remod- eled library together. We’ve spent many days, weeks, and months helping Mrs. Mur- phy shelve books, take inventory, move fur- niture, and even drill holes! After getting the library in order, our next project was the an- nual book fair. We made enough profit to purchase a beautiful new reference shelf. We also kept ourselves busy throughout the year helping out and keeping a close count of Campbell Soup labels. The school received a certificate for audio-visual equipment for the amount of labels contrib- uted. Because the library is such an asset to our school, Mrs. Murphy and all the club members should be commended for their hard work and effort through the year. Let's hope for even more success next year. MEXICO . . . HERE WE COME!!! 1st Row: Lisa Mashburn, Kris Kasper, Kelly Jones, Kathy Bange, 2nd Row: Susan Allen, Maria Grubb, Kory Jones, Kathy Carter, Kim Howell, Valerie Place, 3rd Row: Darin LaCrone, Andy Shreeves, Cami Norcross, Jamie Krukewitt, Theresa Clark, Janet Collins, Rick Carter, Mrs. Best Heloise's Hint for a good time: No bebe la agua The Spanish Club has been very busy this year trying to raise sufficient funds for a trip to Mexico. We sold fruit, made pinatas, and held a taco din- ner. All of these projects were very successful, as we reached our fund raising goal, and even sur- passed it. The year was not all work, though. We also held our annual Fiesta do Navidad (Christmas party) in which the highlight was smashing open the colorful piiiata. Next year we'll have to start from scratch, but judging from all the hard work and effort put forth this year, further success is inevitable. 70 Officers: Kris Kasper, President; Kelly Jones, Vice President; Kathy Bange, Secretary; Brenda Freeman, Treasurer (not pictured) Members of 1982 Marching Band Drum Major: Jamie Krukewitt With a new band director this year, the Marching Panthers of 1982-1983 ended our sea- son with a great outlook for the upcoming year. We began practicing two weeks before the start of school to break in the new members coming up and to refresh our memo- ries from last year. The days were long and hot, but those who survived realized that it would be worth it in the end. We performed our pregame and halftime shows at every home game. We marched in the HHS Homecoming Parade, about six of us marched in the grade school Halloween Pa- rade and we marched in competition at the Tuscola Old Fashioned Days” parade. We marched our halftime show in two com- petitions this year. At EIU we placed 1st place Drum Major and 3rd place Percussion Unit and at the U of I we placed 3rd place Drum Major and 5th place band in the show competition and in parade competition we placed 2nd place Drum Major, 3rd place Percussion Unit and 5th place band. Then, Marching Band was over and it was time to begin Concert Band. 71 Left to Right: Sherri Short, Loriann Dillman, Kris Kasper, Mary Ellis, Kris LaCrone, Jane Carrington, Jodi Wakefield ••on MAROON MARCHING MACHINE 1982 Flutes: LeAnne Bear, Jami Moore, Valerie Place, Beth Canaday 72 Clarinets: Brenda Freeman. We started the year by attending the UCA Cheerleading camp and brought back the Spirit Stick and several other ribbons. We generated spirit by selling clickers and garters during football season, and sponsoring the 3rd annual “football breakfast” before the first home game. Our spirit stick caused a few conflicts, but it did succeed in generating spirit and enthusiasm among the classes. We were happy to finish 2nd in the first year of the new East Okaw Conference. Beth really gave the ultimate effort as captain and fin- ished the season with a broken arm. We had a good year and hope that next year will be even better. We would like to mention a few who were especially helpful. Thanks to Beth Canaday for your typ- ing and help to meet our deadlines. Thanks to Lisa McKenzie for helping with the ads. Many thanks to all those who turned in their write ups and to those who helped in other ways to make this yearbook a success and last but not least—we really wish to express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Kerr who helped us and having the pa- tience to help us meet our deadlines. Thanks to all and good luck next year. Sports Editors: Kris Kasper. Jim Rein 77 ACTIVITIES Left: Jim Rein. Patty Carter. Rick Allen. Lisa McKenzie. Brad Wolf. A lot of school spirit was generated at the pep rally; Chuck Hallett and Jim Rein, dressed as cheerleaders, led the Seniors in winning the spirit stick. The Seniors also placed 1st in hall decora- tions. The Juniors won 2nd, the Sophomores won 4th, and the Freshman won 3rd. The cheerleaders sent a singing telegram to the team. Two can- can girls sang it to the team and coaches, much to everyone’s enjoyment. Skits were also given by all the students and faculty, with the Juniors winning 1st. During half time of the Homer-Ridgefarm game, the float winners were announced. The float theme was “Movies of the 80’s”, and Seniors placed 1st, Juniors 2nd, Sophomores 3rd, and Freshman 4th. To culminate the evening, we were victorious over Ridgefarm by the score of 12-41. “Freeway was the band for the Homecoming dance held on Saturday, October 2. The dance theme song was “We've Got Tonight” by Bob Seger. During the coronation ceremony, Lisa McKenzie and Rick Allen were crowned the 1982 Homecoming Queen and King. The Iowa room was decorated in stars and stairways to match the theme of “Stairway to Heaven.” There was a fountain of many colors on the buffet table, which added bright colors and enjoyment to the atmosphere of fun and excitement. This year’s court consisted of Julie Clem, Kris Kasper, Patti Carter, Darrin Tate, Greg Gilhaus, Todd Beard. Patti Carter and Todd Beard were crowned 1983 King and Queen by 1982 Prom King Jack Humphrey and Queen Holly Craver. The band “Storm played the theme song as the attendants and King and Queen danced. The garter time was a big highlight this year as the majority of girls and their dates participated in the fun. Another highlight of the evening was Domino's Pizza making a delivery of 2 pizzas to a table of people who were not filled with the meal of salad, chicken, beef stroganoff, vegetables, and chocolate mousse. Everyone enjoyed the evening of dancing and merriment immensely. It was a huge success. 85 GARTERS!! Cheers! Look at Jim dancing! Look at the boys . . . Is this our principal?
