Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1981 volume:

1981 Volume 63 The Senior Class observed the planting of the Memorial Tree donated by Ingram’s Nursery. Nothing really ever dies That is not born anew— The MIRACLES of NATURE All tell us this is true . . . The flowers sleeping peacefully Beneath the Winter's snow Awaken from their icy grave When Spring winds start to blow And little brooks and singing streams. Icebound beneath the snow, Begin to babble merrily Beneath the sun’s warm glow . . . All all around on every side New life and joy appear To tell us NOTHING EVER DIES And we should have no fear. For death is just a detour Along life’s wending way That leads GOD’S chosen children To a bright and glorious day. —Helen Steiner Rice Brian Kilian and Kerry Wienke standing by the tree donated in memory of their brothers Brett and Ken. 2 I FBF.F It H November 4, 1979 January 19, 1981 The period of trial for 50 hos- tages from the American Embassy in Iran was a time of worry and frustration for their families and the entire country. Paul Lewis, a graduate of our school, was one of these hos- tages. The school and community felt concern for him and his par- ents. The unsuccessful try for liber- ation of these hostages in April, 1980, in which eight Americans lost their lives will be remem- bered as the fullest sacrifice a man can make for his fellow man. Another facet of this period was the escape of several Ameri- cans with the aid of the Canadian Embassy in Iran long after ours had been overrun. With total dis- regard for themselves, the Cana- dians made identity cards for the Americans and flew them out. Grateful Americans sent heartfelt thanks to all Canada. This taking of American hos- tages has brought forth a tide of patriotism in our nation. The hos- tages have said that if their cap- tivity has served our country in a positive way, their months and months of confinement has been worth it. Also at EIU, the Flag Corps and Drum Majors each received First and the Percussion took Third. It was a fun year and rewarding, too, with all the trophies we receivedl 46 Drum Majors: Nancy Dodd. Homer Scores, 8 Oakland 6 6 Bement 8 44 ABL 0 18 Georgetown 38 0 Cerro Gordo 22 12 Atwood-Hammond 6 22 Arthur 6 The football season started out bleak for our two new coaches, Diskin and Spezia. With 33 people signed up, only 18 showed for practice. This number dwindled even more because of injuries. Even though our JV team was made up almost entirely of fresh- men and sophomores, our record was 4-3. This was a great test, especially since most of the other teams dressed some varsity players. The highlight of the year was our victory over ABL. We're expecting great things from next year’s squad. 50 51 Homecoming 1980 The Junior placed l l with the theme 'Station HHS proud as a panther. I he Senior placed 2nd with the theme Panther will tackle the PCX with pride. The Freshmen placed 3rd with the theme We’ve captured the SC's. Wei capture the Trojans. the Sophomore placed 1th with the theme Panther $i e Troian a Royal Much U King Kevin And Queen Carla Homecoming 1980 was very different from past years. For the first time we did not have a varsity team and so the spirit was not as high as in the past. The second factor was we had a disc jockey with records instead of a band. The student body didn't respond well and only a small group attended except during coronation. Even though the numbers were small or the records not the greatest, a lot of fun was had with request numbers, and the students, along with the king, queen, and court enjoyed the evening. 54 Attendants: Kenny Lacey. They were a fighting team, even though they were on the short end of the scores. Next year they will be im- proved and we should see more victories, and perhaps a winning season. 58 f 4 m 0 I ■V 59 60 Carla Sturdyvin Captain Gwen Spencer Lisa McKenzie Suzie Somers Andrea Myers Mrs. Morrison Sponsor Varsity Cheerleaders Beth Canaday Kathy Bange Jamie Krukewitt 61 Joni Ethridge Captain Kris Kasper Co-captain 62 Lynda Butler Susan Mayhew Julie Clem Terri Pridemore Pom Pons Kris LaCrone Patti Carwile Theresa Clark 63 Sitting: Jim Mayhew. manager; Kenny Lacey; Alan Miller, manager. With only one senior on the team and the rest predominantly sophomores, we didn’t have much chance against other teams in the conference. Even though our record was 1-21, our boys earned a great deal of experience and never gave up. Basketball Even though our junior varsity team didn’t have a winning sea- son, the players gained valuable experience. The team was com- prised mainly of freshmen, while other JV teams in the conference had sophomores and even juniors playing. Some of our JV players had to dress for the varsity game right after their game. We're ex- pecting big things from next year’s JV team. Good luck, guys! 66 Is it really 100% ? Muhammed Who? Girls’ Track With a small, young team of seven, not too much could be expected, but with hard work and confidence, there were some close meets. Homer came away with several second and third places. Because the team was young, we can plan on seeing them out next year. 72 Row I: Rod Ketchum, Chuck Hallett. Rick Allen. Jeff McDonald. Kevin Good. Jim Rien. Row 1. Frank Henderson. Jesse Pruitt. Perry Dable. Steve Pridemore. Darrin Tate. Alan Miller, and Coach Diskin. Boys’ Track The boys track team had a very good season this year. With a new coach, Mr. Diskin, the junior-varsity team placed 4th in the conference. The team scored a total of 35 points; this is an accomplishment be- cause the years before the team was lucky to score half that. Every member of the J.V. team scored a point for the squad. Since most of the team are underclassmen, we should have an even better season next year if the boys continue to work as hard as they did this year. 73 74 75 Muggy’ Merry Christmas Joni Ethridge as Muggsy and Sara Boen as Elmer. Problems arose about the food and service, but most were resolved. The band. Freeway, however, was really good and the music was nice to dance to. Once we were asked to lower the volume, but that problem, too, was overcome. Annette Lewis and Greg Bange, last year's queen and king, crowned Cindy and presented Bill with the scepter as the 1981 Prom royalty. The prophecies, from the juniors, were given by Rob Dunn and Russ Norton. The hatchets, from the seniors, were given by Carla Sturdyvin and Rich Nale. This portion of the program was most enjoyed by everyone. All in all, the Prom was a success. Then, on to post- prom at Western Bowl until 4 a.m.l 78 79 80 First Row: Jane Carrington. Judy Freeman. We held two sashings naming five new members each time. The induction ceremony for all the ini- tiates was held early in May. Our service project for the year was to be a curriculum manual for use by all under- classmen! however, because of pending cur- riculum changes and the early registration, we were unable to prepare the booklet. This will be a project for the next year’s Honor Society. 84 Standing: Lynda Butler. Mark Richter. Kellie Pfaab. Lora Jean Reed. Theresa Clarke. Jeff McDonald. Brad Woodward. Julie Clem. We worked at all football and basketball games selling popcorn which boosted our account. The Pres, and Vice-Pres. attended a workshop at Jamaica with many other schools and their members. There we learned many ideas which could be fulfilled. We final- ly accomplished the task of revising the constitution. We set up a St. Patrick’s—Sadie Hawkins dance which was not much of a turn out but was enjoyed by those who attended. We feel that the year was a success and wish luck to the years ahead. 85 Y earbook Staff Photographers: Joni Ethridge. Donna Kirks. Nancy Dodd. Co-Editors: Joni Ethridge. On October 30 we Trick or Treat” for toys to be repaired or mended to give to the Children’s Home. We collected several bags of toys and candy. The Christmas bake sale was held at the City Building with all members assigned to bring cakes, cookies, or pies. The season’s spirit didn't seem to be with the girls as most elected to pay a fine instead of bringing baked items. We offered a Valentine’s bake sale with heart-shaped cakes. We expected to sell about 40 in all . . . but. cakes, cakes, cakes, and more cakesl In fact, more than 200! As if the unexpected number wasn’t bad enough, we had a snowstorm on Tuesday—no school and no baking—no school. Thursday and Fridayll Talk about a busy kitchen with 150 cakes to bake, over 200 to ice and decorate! We got them all done by Friday afternoon, but no one wanted to see cakes for some time to come. Our final moneymaking project was our popcorn and salt-and-pep- per sets. Again, we hoped for at least moderate sales, but they went with a bang (or should I say pop”?). We made a good profit on this project, too. The fun part of the entire year was using part of our profits for a trip to Six Flags. We all enjoyed the Screaming Eagle and the Jet Screamer. We left for home at 7:30 and still had surprises! 89 % { First Row: Julie Clem. Kathy Bange. Gwen Spencer, Suzie Somers, Coach Diskin. Andrea Myers, Lisa McKenzie. Carla Sturdyvin, Cindy Allen.
