Our thoughts were filled by flashes of their smiling faces. Many memories filled their favorite places. Kenny and Brett, our friends, in this world again we will never see. But in our hearts and in our minds there they will always be! When we were little we cried over skinned knees. When we became older we cried over broken hearts. And now that you are gone. We cry over you. 2 OUR FRIENDS • • • GOD'S PROMISE I'll lend you for a little while, A child of mine. He said. For you to love while he lives, and mourn for when he's dead. It may be six or seven years or twenty-two or three. But will you til I call him back, take care of him for me? He'll bring you charm to gladden you and should his stay be brief. You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise you he will stay, since all from earth return, but there are lessons taught down there, I want this child to learn. I've looked the wide world over in search of teachers true, and from the throngs that crowd life's lane, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain. Nor hate me when I come to call to take hirn back again. I fancied that I heard them say, Dear Lord, thy will be done, For all the the joy this child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may, and for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay. But should the angel call for him much sooner than we planned, we'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand. Elisabet Nyquist — From Sweden My year in Homer is coming to its end. It has been a year full of new people and new experiences. When I left Sweden, I didn't have the slightest idea what this year should be like. My picture of the U.S.A. was hamburgers, big cars, huge sky scrapers, television with 17 channels — everything very com- mercial. Now I know that my picture was partly right. The U.S.A. has all of this, but it also has much more. I met people who didn't live in New York and drive around in big Cadillacs. The people I met lived in a small town, Homer, in central Illinois. Their hospitality was greater than I ever expected. They were such nice and friendly people so now I feel like I have never lived anywhere else. This year has been a lot of fun! I think it has been especially fun to participate in the different school events — Homecoming, Marching Band, Prom, Bas- ketball, Football, and Graduation. It made me feel like a real American Student. I think I have learned quite a bit about American life and traditions. Finally, I want to thank everybody — the GREAT class of '80, all other students at Homer High School, all the teachers and administrators, my host family, and all the other nice people I have met during this year — thanks for everything you have done for me! You are all welcome to come to see me if you get a chance to visit Sweden some day! Love, Elisabet Elisabet with Pluto at Walt Disney World. Elisabet with Santa and her host-family. The young band proved that willpower is the key to success as they marched on to many a victo- ry. In their first competition, held at Illinois State University, the band placed second overall in their class, the drum majors received second, and the flag corps took a third. The Eastern Illinois University competition was a little disappointing from the first; however, the Marching Panthers still came home with some winnings. The band placed sixth out of 10 class C-D schools, the drum line received a third, and the flag corps took sixth out of all the schools competing, classes AA-D. The last competition held at the University of Illi- nois, left the band with still more awards. In the pa- rade competition the band placed fourth, the flag corps third, and the drum majors second. In the field show competition, the band again received a fourth, the flag corps a third, but this time the drum majors took first place in their class.—So ends the 79 sea- son of competition for the Homer Marching Pan- thers, but it will be a season long remembered. It was the first year of awards and trophies for this proud little band! 46 47 Girls' Volleyball 1979 Our volleyball team was a small but close team With only enough players to form two teams, w couldn't afford any injuries or disagreements. We give special thanks to Carol Chrestman, Mar} Ellis, and Kris Kasper for filling in on the J.V. tean because of a lack of players. Even though our record was not good, we had fur and gained more experience. We're now prepared fo a winning season next year. Close Defeats This year's football team compiled a record of 5-4 which is quite an accomplishment considering the limited number of athletes available. This year's team was the smallest football squad that Homer has ever had. A total of thirteen seniors and one junior made up the nucleus of the team with five freshmen com- pleting the squad. Due to injuries, there were only seventeen members available for most of the season. but this did not bother the Panthers' play any. This team was the highest scoring team in the history of Homer football. The highlight of the season was the overwhelming victory over Newman in our Home- coming game. The squad led the conference in scor- ing and was second in the area in scoring. The team went out on a high note by winning its last three games. Row 1: Todd Beard, Alan Miller. Everyone worked hard to make this year's Homecoming a successful one. Each class prepared its floats for the parade on Friday, September 28. The floats were constructed to the theme of Western Movies. The week of September 24-29 went by quickly as the classes finished their floats in time for the annual bonfire and pep rally Thursday, Septem- ber 27. The bonfire and pep rally help to spark flames for a victory for Friday's game against the Newman Redskins. Friday afternoon at 1:25, students, fans, and teach- ers filed into the gym for the annual pep assembly in which the winners of the hallway decorations were announced. The seniors were awarded first; fresh- men received second; sophomores made third; and the juniors sank into last place. At the game Friday night, the Panthers TROUNCED the Redskins 61-8! At halftime the win- ners of the floats were announced. The juniors cap- tured first with the theme, They Died with Their Cleats on, sophomores received second with the theme, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, seniors managed third with the theme, Custer Failed and Now It's the Redskins' Last Chance, and the fresh- men came in last with, We're Gonna Paint Their Wagon Maroon and Gold. The date was Saturday, September 29, 1979, and the time was 8:00 p.m. The crowd enthusiastically lis- tened to the band, PYLOT, play Stairway to Heav- en. At 10:00 p.m., coronation began. Voted on by the senior class, the Homecoming Court consisted of King candidates, Stan Burton, Fred Danner, and Kevin McKenzie, and Queen candidates, Kim Chrestman, Angel Dable, and Kris Lacey. At 10:00 p.m., the tension built in the H.H.S. audience as they watched to see who would become this year's King and Queen. Selected by the student body and faculty, Stan and Kim were named King and Queen. Along with everything else, the dance and Homecoming was a great success this year . . . one that the seniors of 1980 will always cherish. Karen and Jamie crown Kim and Stan Homecoming Queen and King. 55 The freshmen came in last place with the theme, We'll Paint Their Wagon Maroon Gold. The juniors captured FIRST with the theme, They Died with Their Cleats On. The sophomores received second place with the theme, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The seniors finished third with the theme, Custer Failed but Now It's the Redskins Last Stand. 56 Face the camera. Majorettes!! Show'em your underalls. Flags!! A little aggressive, aren't ya, Stan?!? Despite our great height disad- vantage, the season was a great one and had several highlights. This is the first time in 4 years that the Panthers defeated Cerro Gordo. The Panthers had an astounding victory against Newman, 95-37! The Panthers cap- tured 3rd place in the Jamaica Tourna- ment as Scott Covington made a field goal at the buzzer. In the Little Okaw Tournament, Homer seized 2nd place. The Panthers also grabbed 2nd place in the Little Okaw Conference. The Panthers will be losing 9 of their 10 players. The 1980-81 season is expected to be a rebuilding year with much expected from the underclass- men. The Panthers were proud to have 3 players selected as All Conference. This year 7 new members were in- ducted into the Society. The inductees consisted of 5 seniors and 2 sopho- mores. The induction ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 20, for every- one. 75 STUDENT COUNCIL Officers From Top: Kris Lacey, President; Jim Kirby, Vice President; Joni Ethridge, Secretary Treasurer. Student Council planned a student exchange with Catlin High School for the purpose of getting new ideas from a different school. The pro- gram was successful, and it served as a great learning experience for both schools. 76 Officers: Mr. Stipp, Adviser; Greg Bange, Secretary Treasurer; Todd Smith, President; Stan Burton, Vice President; Mr. Miller, Adviser. The group was not very active this year as far as holding meetings or having money-making projects. However, the group decided to go on a trip this year to spend some of the club's money. The members de- cided to go to Six Flags in St. Louis on May 16. The seniors in H-Club would like to wish good luck to next year's group! Band per- formed at home basketball games. We played at the Christmas con- cert, which went very well. Dur- ing the second half of the school year, we prepared for the Spring concert and graduation. The band played a march at graduation. The senior graduating members wish the band a fun and prosper- ous next year. 79 FHA Mrs. Frank was the new sponsor for FHA this year. She inspired the club to try new things. The club had its annual Freshman initiation at Homer Lake in September. FHA sold jewelry this year as a money- making project. Although the club made little money on sales, it had fun selling jewelry. For Thanksgiv- ing, FHA donated a decorated food basket to the Illini Christian Children's Home. Our activity in De- cember was caroling at the Urbana Nursing Home and then afterwards eating at the Village Inn. Every- one exchanged gifts, and it was a fun evening! Dur- ing the National FHA week, the group sponsored a breakfast week in which the club sold egg McMuffins and donuts to everyone before school in the cafeteria. The club made a profit on the sales. The F.H.A. went to Lake of the Woods in Mahomet on May 28 for its field trip this year. The 1979-80 Industrial Arts Club had an excit- ing year. The Club had supper meetings on Wednesday nights once a month. During the basketball season, the Club spon- sored a raffle. The prize was a floor jack and the money raised from the raffle went toward the purchase of 2 metal lathes. Ken Wienke's and Brett Kilian's memorial fund was donated to the I.A. Club for the purchase of these metal lathes. The graduating seniors in I.A. wish good luck to next year's members. They sold China Bells in order to pay for their matching dresses. The dresses obviously got their use. First, during the Christmas season, the girls performed at the Greenbrier nursing home in Champaign, and then they performed at the High School Christmas Concert. After their work, the girls relaxed with a Christmas dinner at Mrs. Trigg's home. After Christmas, the girls per- formed at the Women's Club, the Spring Con- cert, baccalaureate, and High School Gradu- ation. The Chorus was smaller this year, but it was still good. The first half of the year was spent preparing for the Christmas Concert held on December 20. The Chorus sang three num- bers, Jose, Allelujah, and God Rest Ye Mer- ry Gentlemen. The Chorus put on the play The Emperor's Birthday for the grade school. The Chorus also visited Parkland in March for a small concert. In the Spring, the Chorus prepared its number for Graduation, Goodbye. The four graduating seniors wish good luck to next year's chorus. Dale Taeger set a new two-mile race with the time of 10'30.2 . The track team did not win first place in any meets, but the members were hap- py to receive 6th out of the conference. Each boy was out for more than one event so he acquired a great deal of practice. The coach and the members had a good season and hope to have an even better one next year. This year, the girls won one track meet against ABL. The Panthers placed second in several meets, also. There were no seniors on the track team this year so the coach expects to have a quite compe- tent team next year!
