The lack of playing experience, along with injuries to key players, took its toll on the team. But with the lessons learn- ed, a favorable season is expected next year. While a losing season is never a happy experi- ence, in this case it is the groundwork for future seasons and victories to come. A “first” for the fjunior Varsity! The Junior Varsity team had a very good sea- son. Although the team’s record stands at 4-3, it includes 3 very close ballgames and their first victory over Cerro Gordo. In that game, the win- ning TD came after the horn had blown! Much praise should be given to the team and it’s coaches. The Varsity will be happy to have them join them next year. (?iris ’ Volleyball The girls’ volleyball team had a somewhat disappointing season. They had hoped for a winning season but ended up with the A team having a record of 1-7, and the B team claiming a 2-6 record. Although the records do not show the fact, there were many exciting games where much potential was shown. With seven members of the team leaving, it will be up to the underclassmen to build the team back up to full strength We all wish them luck. Varsity J.V. (Not pictured, Todd Smith and Mr. Trask) Everything Points to a Successful Season in 1979 A very small and inexperienced squad took the floor on November 22 to carry on the Homer tradition. After almost three months, the team was still small in size, but had gain- ed valuable experience. Many young inexperienced players had learned and matured into Varsity basketball players. Everything points to a suc- cessful season in 1979. A Great Asset to Next year's Zeam Even though this year’s J.V. ball team did not have any outstanding strength or size, the team still ended their season with a winning record. To add to that record, they came up with a second place finish in the JV Little Okaw Conference Tourna- ment, bringing back to the school a good-sized trophy. Many of the junior Panthers showed a great desire to win, and it should be a great asset to next year’s basketball teams. Keys’ Zrack The Homer track team had a dozen faithful boys on the squad. Each one should be congratulated, along with Coach Wilson, for their individual effort and time spent working on their events. Special congratulations to Dale Taeger for his new school record in the mile run. Much will be expected of Dale in his remaining two years at H.H.S. The team should be a strong contender next year with eleven of the boys re- turning. The road ahead is rocky, but the boys are determin- ed and will be tough to beat. 52 Zrack Queen Pant Danner Standing: Carol Wakefield, Kelley Taylor, Annette Lewis, Patti Freeman, Rynda Ellis, Vicki Clem, Lynn Peters, Mrs. Robison. Qiris’ Softball For the first time ever, Homer received permission to have a Girls’ Softball Team. The girls played three games, each of which was very close, but ended up the loser in all three. The losses were: Georgetown 9-5, Westville 12-8, and at the Regional, Georgetown 5-4. The team loses six seniors and much will be expected of the underclassmen. Although we didn’t start out with a record to be envied, the girls had fun and enjoyed being the first softball team at Homer. Undoubtedly, next year’s team will have a better record. Student Council The Student Council had a very busy year. They sold popcorn at the football and basketball games; rather they dele- gated the students to do it for them. They held a Halloween party with a movie and costume judging; however, not too many students were costumed. At the Christmas party, they had a mov- ie and the Student Council provided cookies and drink. The Seniors sold candy. Student Council tried a student ex- change with Oakwood and Newman. Al- though we did not participate in all of them, perhaps we will become more ac- tive next year. All in all, the year turned out to be a success. There were four members who joined F.H.A. this year. At the start of the year, the F.H.A. had a few money-making proj- ects and, as usual, the F.H.A. provided the concessions for the home football games. Also, in the beginning of the year, the of- ficers attended a rally in Rossville to learn more about how to run their jobs and what their duties were. Later in the year, four members attended the State F.H.A. meeting in Decatur. The F.H.A. had a very enjoyable year and look forward to 1978-79. 7 M A We are the Future Homemakers of America We face the future with warm courage and high hope. Class activities include material on finances, income taxes, salaries and deductions, insurance, credit, advertising, safety, and career development. For fun, we work on Christmas items as our money-mak- ing project to send two students to State Convention. Our first activity was a Freshman Welcome Party, but the problem was, no freshmen showed up!!! We didn’t get to meet on a lot of Wed. because of early dismissal or both gyms were taken. When we did meet though, we found a variety of things to do: bowling, bad- minton, volleyball, and wiffleball. To make money, we sold flowers for Homecoming and coffee for basket- ball games. We also had a “sexy legs” contest. Pictures were taken of the starting offensive and defensive foot- ball players’ legs and were posted to be voted on. Tom Wolf was the proud win- ner of a pair of panty hose and a Daisy razor. The whole year was a lot of fun for those who participated. 68 Left-side top to bottom: Steve Humphrey, Jim Lacey, Craig Collins, Randy Allen, Greg Izard, Bill Buck, Jerry Burton. This year’s H-Club sponsored a spaghetti sup- per following the Villa Grove game and made a substantial amount of money. After the big snowstorm, we had a chili supper following the A.B.L. game on Valentine’s Day. The turnout was not as large as before because of the snow- storm. H-Club invited FCA and GAA to a picnic On May 21. Not many people came, but those who came had a lot of fun. The goal of the H-Club is to raise enough money to buy a weight machine so we can develop bigger and better athletes. 69 Carol Wakefield, Crystal Peters, Sara Ridinger, Kim Wallace, Tammy Chism, Diane Diel, Kim Miller, Linda Ingalls, Patti Freeman. Chorus This year’s chorus was really rugged! We managed to go through three teachers! Seriously, though, our mainstay, Mrs. Breeze, left in Feb- ruary on maternity leave. Miss Burtch, after being ill one week, stayed only one additional week, and Mrs. Javore re- mained in control through the end of the year. The chorus also participated in the Fourth Annual Chorus Festival held at St. Joe and also played a big part in the first Variety Show. Kand Kernes an Old Zradition Under the hot, sunny skies of August, preparations began for the first marching band in 25 years at Homer High School. Second-year band director, Joe Wolfe, assited by head major- ette Patti Freeman, started to mold untrained students, rang- ing in grades from 7 through 12, into a precisioned group of musicians. The whole production took time, but it paid off. The marching band took form and moved sharply together. With our brightly striped maroon-and-gold rugby shirts and white pants, our debut was made in the annual Krazy Daze Parade. The crowd cheered and applauded and that was the time we knew that it was all worth it! Good Luck next year! 1st row. Janene Ethridge, Carla Sturdyvin, Angel Lewis, Debbie Dodd, Jeri Wilson, Jill Craver, Kim Chrestman, Nan- cy Dodd, Mary Beth Woodward, Jill Canaday. 2nd row: Nancy Morgan, Kellie Pfaab, Judy Freeman, Roberta Ket- chum, Jim Patton, Neal Edwards, Patti Freeman, Lynn Peters, Tammy Chism, LeeAnn Newlin, Karen Lacey, Debbie Howell. 3rd row: Pam Danner, Kris Lacey, Crystal Peters, Randy Allen, Ben Mullins, Kelly Sturdyvin, Karen Kasper, Linda Ingalls. Top down: Pam Danner, President; Karen Lacey, Vice- president; Crystal Peters, Secretary-Treasurer. Hand Under the direction of Joe Wolfe, much of the 1977-78 High School Band’s time was spent outside—marching. Learning to march in step, playing new music material, and learning to play and marching at the same time were all in a day’s work. Each member of the band de- serves a round of applause for the effort shown in the first marching band at Homer in 25 years. Thanks to Mr. Wolfe, this dream became a re- ality. Another first was accomplished this year, too. After years of concert after concert, the music department decided to put on a Variety Show. Hard work and plenty of enthusiasm made the show a big hit. Congratulations, band, on a job well done!! 75 1st row: Lee Hockersmith, Kevin McKenzie, Jim Kirby, Todd Smith, Tom Moore, Brett Kilian, Allen Glenn. 2nd row: Mr. Hales, Tom Rushing, Craig Collins, Dale Taeger, Michelle Taylor, Ron Peters, Greg Izard, David Reed, Scott Covington, Steve McDonald. 3rd row: Roger Allen, David Ellis, Randy Allen, Brian Taylor, Stan Burton, Don Taeger, Bill Buck, C. W. Greer, Jerry Burton, David Chrestman, David Robertson. Industrial Arts The club has been involved in num- erous activities this year. A basketball team was organized and rose to the oc- casion to soundly defeat all oppon- ents. Our supper meeting went over well with Mr. Hales as our Chief Chef cooking hamburgers, chili, spaghetti, and other assorted menus. Our fund raising project this year was selling Homer Panther ceramic mugs and tankards with the proceeds going towards use in the department. Fall activities included a wiener roast at Mr. Hale’s home following the Newman-Homer football game. Many and varied activities and projects are planned for another good year in ’79. Officers: Tom Moore, Craig Collins, S.C. Reps.; Michelle Taylor, Sec.- Treasurer; Steve McDonald, Vice-president; Jerry Burton, President. 76 Kim Wallace, Vice-President; Tom Moore, President; Connie Rog- ers, Treasurer. The Library Club was busy this year. With the help of Mrs. O’Connor, the club held a book fair, a poster contest, and made posters. They also attended a meet- ing at Jamaica High School and went on a field trip to the U of I Library. Ail this was in addition to our usual routine of check- ing in and out books and putting them back into the stacks in the right place. The annual inventory at the end of the year is the headache that must be endured by all club members. Thank heavens another year is finished! Classes were let out early, and Pep assembly was soon underway. We congratulate the cheerleaders for one of the most spirited pep sessions ever, with an amusing take-off on “The Wizard of Oz”, and a slightly “sticky” skit from the faculty. The Freshmen were announced as winners of the hall contest and the Seniors’ super window was proclaimed best. Then came the disappointing news: the parade was postponed until Saturday morning. The game was held despite a downpour that would have had Noah building an Ark. The marching Panthers, in their first season of marching, were forced to cancel their perfor- mance. Although we lost the game, our spirits were never dampened. The parade was held Saturday, and a group of Seniors worked hard all day to give the gym a new look. During the dance, the Freshman were announced as first place winners of the float contest followed by the Seniors and Juniors tied for second, and the Sophomores in last place. This Homecoming, the Seniors’ last, was a strange combi- nation of disappointment and excitement. After four years of hard work and harder wishing, our last Homecoming was over. But the junior class overcame that and hired a terrific band named GEY- SER. The flash of the camera may have interrupted your candlelight din- ner and dance for no reason because none of the pictures turned out. The pictures on this page are the courtesy of Christy Danner. Even after all this. Prom went smoothly, and Peg and Steve were an- nounced as Queen and King 1978 at the Sheraton Inn in Danville. It was a well-organized Prom, and we hope that the juniors next year show the same effort. 96 Sublofo l H O !
