Student Council Karin Freeman, Treasurer; Donna Pfaab, Secretary; Paul Lewis, Second Vice-President; Ryan Clarke, Vice President; Diane McLane, President. The student council has worked hard this year trying to entertain and represent the student body. The Christmas party, planned in detail, and for once to have a feature length film, had to be can- celled due to the snowy December weather. One major accomplishment of the council was to hold a Sadie Hawkins Dance. It went over beautifully with overwhelming participation. Attempts for a student lounge were again rebuffed, as were at- tempts for various recreational money-making pro- jects. Hang in there gang, and keep plugging for the student body of Homer High School. Sustaining Members. Seated: Dan Wakefield, Randy Peters, and Ryan Clarke. Standing: Beth Woodside, Deana Dodd, Amy Tate, Cheryl Varvel, Diane McLane, and Carol Messman. National Nonor Society National Honor Society is a scholarship honorary whose requirement is a B average. Since no individual may even be considered without this average, the other qualifications--leadership, service, and character--play most impor- tant roles. A faculty committee discuss each candidate on these qualifications, Then by written ballot each committee member evaluates every candidate on a basis of 1 for low to 5 for high. After compiling each student’s rating sheets, the students accepted into the honorary are sashed at an all school assembly. Formal initiation in an evening ceremony takes place about a week later. Nominated and accepted into National Honor Society as actives this spring are seniors Shelley Libka and Donna Pfaab; juniors Mary Deffley and Robin Srum; and sophomore provisional members Dave Diel, Wendy Chism, Debbie Pruitt, and Sharon Tate. 41 First Row: Mrs. Ambler, Mrs. Sandahl, Beth Woodside, Mary Pfaab, Anita Baird, Shelley Libka, Donna Pfaab, Kathy Wolf, Pat Robards, Cheryl Varvel, Mrs. Mans. The Future Homemakers of America was again one of the busiest organizations of Homer High School. To start the year off the girls held their annual Freshman Wel- come Party on September 6 at Homer Lake. On October 13, members of the Homer chapter attended the Section Rally at ABL. As usual, the organization ran the concession stand at the football games. Later on in the year, the F.H. A. attended a Foreign Foods Party held at Jamaica High School. For a Christmas project, they went caroling at the Champaign County Nursing Home. The club also sponsored an assembly at which Dave Rothermel of ABL spoke. The F.H.S. was well represented at the state convention in Springfield with four girls attending. As a special event this year, the organization spent the evening out in Champaign. Accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Marrs, Mr. and Mrs. Chism, Mrs. Dodd and Mr. and Mrs. Ambler, the girls ate dinner at Ireland's restaurant and then attended an evening performance of the Ice Capades at the Assembly Hall. Even though the evening started off with a brokendown bus, everyone had a good time. The F. H. A. was busy this year, but it will probably be even busier next year. football Concessions Keep Us Busy! Along with the regularly scheduled events of bowling, volleyball, and badminton, there have been some very successful special events. A bike hike from the depot lot to Homer Lake was one fun-filled adventure that many enjoyed. Then, of course, the annual chili supper and home- coming flower sales went off with great success. In fact, the whole year has been fun. Keep up the good work. Kneeling: Sharon Tate, Public Relations; Debra Allen, Points Chairman; Any Tate, Treasurer. Better get in there and get busy next year, boys. 45 Dan Wakefield, Vice-President; Rick Srum, Tre- asurer; Dan Izard, President. Along with filing cards, straightening shelves, and running down overdue books, the librarians helped many high school students to find the material they needed. The Home Economics Related Occupations organiza- tion expanded this year. We had sixteen members and jobs ranging from babysitting to landscaping. As a money mak- ing project this year, the H. E. R. O. club made yule logs and chimney centerpieces and sold them at Christmas. On April 21, an employer appreciation banquet was held at Ireland's Restaurant in Champaign. Plaques were given to the employers to show the club's appreciation. This year plaques were given to the outstanding boy and girl in the H. E. R. O. They were presented to Jack Edwards and Cheryl Varvel. The H. E.R. O. hopes the future clubs will grow and bring forth good workers. Along with livening up the pep band by recruiting the eighth graders, he also started a jazz band that gets together once a week. To top it all off, he started a summer band program to keep Homer's musicians in shape for the coming year. With all the improvements of this year, next year’s band is sure to be even better. Chorus A very enjoyable chorus emerged from Homer High School, with amazingly large number of male voices again this year. All those who have heard them in their winter and spring concerts have to agree on the melodi- ous quality and enthusiasm of the group. Homer High definitely backs our fine chorus and wishes them good luck in the following years to come. Homerian Staff Co-editors Carol and Amy have headed the team for this year’s Homerian. Along with the rest of the staff, they have tried to make this year's Homerian the best yet. Un- fortunately, due to a money shortage, the book had to be shortened by a few pages. We just hope the extra touch of tender loving care has helped to make up for this shortage. Zlte Qood of a Winning Season The Panthers experienced their first winning season since entering the Little Okaw. Coached by Bruce Miller, the cats finished second in conference play behind Oakland, who suf- fered its only defeat to the Panthers. The Panthers, led by an experienced group of seniors, started slowly, but by their first conference encounter, they pulled together to defeat a strong Bement team. To fill starting spots, this year's team relied heavily on juniors and sophomores, who did a job everyone should be proud of. The season was a success for both team and fans. The team showed a spirit which they seemed to have lacked in the two previous seasons in Little Okaw. With the upcoming juniors and sophomores, the 74 season should prove to be even better. In the fall we competed against surrounding schools including Villa Grove, ABL, St. Joe, Jamaica, Urbana, and Unity. There was enough interest by the girls that two teams were formed. The B team defeated Jamaica and Unity, while the A team lost all their games. We sponsored the 1st Annual Homer Invitational Tournament from Oct. 29 to Nov. 1. There were eight schools participating. Although our record wasn’t very good, the girls enjoyed being the first girls’ sports team to represent Homer. J flew Experience Sitting: Kristi McKenzie, Lori Izard. Kneeling: Linda Rogers, Sharon Gordon, Donna Srum, Jackie Clark, Sheila Hubert. Standing: Mrs. Howdyshell, Bonita Mullins, Diane McLane, Jill Dodd, Debbie Schroeder, Ruthie Crain, Robin Srum. A Successful first Season The girl's basketball season was a great improvement over the volleyball season. The overall record was four wins to three losses. The losses, to begin with, were due to the lack of experience of the Homer girls. Yet they proved after the first two games that they learned quickly and were soon playing as well if not better than the other teams. Keep up the good work girls! Regional Champs! This year's basketball team continued the tradition of good Homer basketball. Coach Jim Trask, receiving the var- sity coaching position on short notice, came through the sea- son as though he had been in the position for years. Even though the teams's record, 18-10, was not as good as the pre- vious season, they still showed that Homer could play basket- ball and was to be respected. The Panthers finished first, second, and third in their three tournaments. Gathering a third in the Jamaica Invita- tional, a second in the Little Okaw Tourney at Bement, Homer finally got everything together to capture a first at the ABL Regional. It was the first regional victory for Homer since 1952. Next year’s team should be as good a contender for the Little Okaw title as any. There will be two returning juniors and a good crop of sophomores from this year coming back. Coach Randy Waddell drove the J. V. 's to a victorious season with a 12-9 record. Two of the losses went into overtime, and two other games were lost only by less than four points. The team also placed third in the Fresh-Soph Lit- tle Okaw Tourney held at Oakland. At the basketball banquet John Dodd was voted Most Valuable Player for the junior varsity team. Zrack The 1974 Homer Track team made some headway this year and are expected to return strong next year. They achieved some notable individual records. As a team, the varsity finished fifth in the County Track Meet, seventh in the Unity Invita- tional, and fifth in the Conference Meet. The Fresh-Soph finished fourth in their conference meet and sixth at the ABL Invitational. Next year's squad will be young and strong, consisting of many juniors and a few seniors. The sophomore class will also make a good contribution to the team. Zrack The girl's track season was a great success for the first year. They won three out of five meets, finishing up with a victory over Villa Grove and a winning season. Most of the meets were held in the wonderful spring rains. This caused a bit of difficulty, but the girls fared well in spite of it. At the District meet at Unity, the girls did quite well, considering the size of Homer in comparison to the other schools. No one advanced to state, but with a lot of work and coaching, these budding athletes are bound to end up champs in the years to come. Good luck girls! The seniors' final wish. After working hard on floats, hallways, and the gym, the students of H.H.S. produced a Homecoming that will never be topped. The major events started Thursday evening with the snake dance. But spirit was lacking—everyone was tired after working all week on floats and hallways. Friday will be remembered for a long time by the seniors. From the moment of entering the gym for the assembly until we won the game that night, the spirit was outstanding. The poster contest along with the float con- test was won by the mighty seniors. Well .... the freshmen did tie on the floats for 1st. The victory against Newman made the day complete. '77 Ccave Jt to you.” Despite the rain, lack of interest on the part of the junior and senior classes, and babies, the Junior Senior Play, I'll Leave It to You by Noel Coward was a success. The play dealt with a charming Englishwoman, Mrs. Dermett, and her five children. Mr. Dermett, who did not go near his family for four years before his death, died and left his family destitute. The family’s one hope was their Uncle Daniel, a rich bachelor who lives in South America. To add a little romance to the play Bobbie is in love with Faith Crom- bie. Little does Bobbie know that Faith and her mother, Mrs. Crombie are out for the Dermett money. To add a little class to the play is the Dermett s wonderful butler Griggs. Even through the crews were small, the students did a good job. The members were Keith Rohl and Jeff Jones on the construction crew; Ruthie Crain, Robin Srum, Donna Strum, and Jill Dodd on the make-up crew; Tom Edwards and Dan Izard on the lighting crew. Somewhere before babies were mentioned. The second night of the paly, Mr. James Allen, the director of the play, welcomed to the world his second child, a son, Robert Ethan. So in very many ways the play was a success. Keith Rohl takes a break from his construction. Did I hear you right?” I have only three years to live. This is a close-up--fear! Faith darling, will you marry me? You beastly children! Message for you, madam. The twentieth floor of Century 21 was again the scene for honoring the seniors for one last time. The banquet, which began at seven o'clock, was very delicious and included enough varity of foods for everyone to be satisfied. Despite a lack of iced tea, the banquet went well. After the hatchets and the prophesy were given, the tables were moved back, and the dance began to the fast beat of High Miles Eight . Even though the room was very warm, the dance floor was never empty. At ten o'clock coronation was completed with Dan Wakefield and Shelley Libka being crowned as King and Queen to reign over the night. The crowd thinned out and at eleven-thirty everyone changed clothes and went to Post Prom at the Fox Theater, where a mystery thriller The Other was shown. When the movie was over, everyone left a successful prom night feeling very happy. 83 84 Prom Js the Zime for Dancing.
