These new members were: seniors; Mark McLane, Ron Flessner, Janet Meade, and Debbie Walters; juniors; Vickie Hobbs, Cindy Clarke, Tom Smith, and Gary Place; and sophomores; Diane McLane and Carol Messman. Concluding the Induction Ceremony, Reverend Flessner of the United Methodist Church gave a very inspirational talk. Finally, tradition took over as the Provisional new mem- bers served their superior upper classmen, parents, and friends cake and punch. Kneeling: Kent Webb, President and Tom Clark, Vice-President. The band members became more distinguished this year with their catchy new gold blazers. The music also exhibited a catchy newness to it as the band performed quite enthu- siastically at football and basketball games, state music contest, pep sessions, and spring and Christmas concerts. Due to their persistant practicing and talent, the band took many top honors at both ensemble and band state music contest. We at Homer High School are quite confi- dent that Homer’s band is one of the best yet. Chorus A young, but very enjoyable chorus emerged from H.H.S., with an amazingly large number of male voices this year. All those who heard them must agree on the melodious quality and enthusiasm of the group. Besides successfully performing at both winter and spring concerts, they also became a likeable addition to a any church service. Then how could we have endured the day before Christmas vacation without the cho- rus gently crooning many study-haliers to sleep with their caroling through the halls? Many members also formed various ensembles which performed quite successfully at state contest. Homer High definitely gives chorus a firm pat on the back and hopes that chorus will continue to be as successful in the years to come. Juture Homemakers of America The Homer Chapter of the Future Homemakers of America became more noted than ever before. Activities for F.H.A started rolling way back in September with the Freshmen Wel- come Party, which led to the football concessions, the formal initiation, Section Rally (in which two members became officers), and Tam Wat sales. The traditional and much-applaud- ed Style Show, where not only were men's and women's clothing modeled, but also where Janet Collins was appropriately presented with the title Little Miss F.H.A., was a total success. A special treat was bestowed upon members in December when lucky girls were invited to dinner and a presentation of the play, LUV, at Stage One in Williamsport, Indiana. Then, who can forget the F. H.A.'s revival of the once-traditional Sweet- heart Dance in February? Activities came to a peak at the Mother-Daughter Tea as awards were presented and a parade of prom dresses and bridal gowns were viewed. The Homer Chapter was honored when Vicki Hobbs was elected Presi- dent of the State F.H.A. Looking back, members could definitely say they were kept busy ALL year by doing many worth-while activities. Janet Collins was crowned Little Miss F.H.A. 54 Vicki and Marilyn pose with Project Hope, Section 16's selection for aid this year. J.S.A.-fets As many noticed, Women’s Lib became prominent in the F.S.A. - Jets, but of course this was a wel- come prominence. Like most scien- tists, the scientific minds of the members usually limited themselves to talking and dreaming. This year was different, though as the F.S.A. usually had a program for each meeting, which varied from rockets to circuits. In spite of its limited activity, Homer's F.S.A. is definite- ly gaining in importance in Homer school life. The Freshman Welcome Party in September kicked off a busy schedule of events for the G. A. A. Along with the weekly Tuesday night activities of bowling, volleyball, softball, basketball, aerial tennis, and swimming, there were numerous playdays and sportsdays to attend at neighboring schools, along with the very successful Chili Supper to plan. At one such sportsday, one bowling team brought home the third-place trophy. Then finally after 16 weeks of wading, the G.A.A.’s Homer T-shirts arrived and sales promptly began. During the week of April 10, the G.A.A. sponsored a leukemia drive in which anyone could send a mouse to college for 27 . Also, who could forget the volleyball game with the faculty, in which the G. A.A. got trimmed by the teachers in overtime? The year’s activities came to a peak with the presentation of awards at the very enjoyable Mother-Daughter Banquet. Looking back, G.A.A. became one of the most active organizations at H. H.S. Officers: Clockwise: Debbie Morrow, President; Carol Messman, 2nd vice-president; Cheryl Varvel, Points Chairman; Barb Strawser, His- torian; Paula Sturdyvin, Secretary; Marilyn Um- barger, Treasurer; Beth Woodside, Sportshead; Linda Samson, Student Council; Judy Allen, Public Relations. 57 Ass’t. Momerian Staff 58 Hair-pulling and brain-wracking were common sights in the Homerian room as the editors and photographers worked diligently on the Homerian. As you can tell, putting out a year- book is no easy project. First, you have to have enough money for it. This was partially alleviated by the efforts of the advertising committee and the sales committee, not to mention the class treasury. The edi- tors then attended a seminar on the yearbook procedures at the Ramada Inn. Of course, we can't forget the time spent on getting pictures of everyone in school. Finally, who can ignore the very words you are reading? To many of those involved, the Homerian might have seemed like one big headache, but the head- aches should be well appreciated by all those who read it! Program Chairman. The birth of the new Library Club at Homer brought forth a whole new list of activities for students at H.H.S. Along with the members' daily activities of helping students find books, they also found time to organize activities for all the stu- dents. While Christmas spirits were high, members conducted a door- decorating contest with amazing re- sults. Along with other clubs, they also went into the money-making business, as they held a soc-hop and a pin-selling campaign. All in all, the Library Club has come along a great deal in its first year of existence. As an activity, the club presented plays for the lower grades. 59 Student Council The Student Council became one of the busiest clubs at Homer. Be- side their regular activities of ap- proving other organizations' activi- ties, the Student Council sponsored many other activities for the students. Who can forget the Hallowe'en Dress-Up day? the Christmas movie of Love, Faith, and Beauty”? the delicious popcorn at the football games? and the campaigns for presi- dent and vice-president? The Little Okaw Valley Student Council Association also felt the influence of Homer at its meetings as Diane McLane was elected treasurer of the organization for the 1972-1973 season. Mark McLane was Champaign County Representative for the District Association for the past year. Also, Homer's Student Council cooperated with Arthur's in a student exchange, in which four Student Council members from Ho- mer attended Arthur on April 26 and four of theirs attended Homer. All in all, it was a very successful and active year for the Student Council. 1st row: Chris Sturdyvin, Donna James, Jo Krukewitt, Lynda James, Debbie Wilson, Debbie Morrow, Ryan Clarke. Zatler This year Tatler fans were pleasantly surprised by an issue nearly every month, due to the hard work of the editors and reporters. Tatler procedures were a bit different this year since only a limited number of reporters were allowed to participate. These were usually the best noses for news from each of the classes. Tatler contained many new and much-welcomed additions to it, like Senior Firsts and Junior Seconds, and poems from certain gifted members of the school. Due to the cooperation of everyone involved, we were able to read one of the most enjoyable school papers ever. Val and Donna are keeping busy by running the Tatler pages. 61 Zmdit'm Homecoming........64-67 7. Even though the rain drenched the field for the first half of the game. Homecoming spirits could not be doused. The Panthers fought a fine Atwood-Hammond team, and over- powered them in the second half. The end score found the mighty, mighty Panthers on top 28-21. This was the fighting Panthers' first vic- tory of their '71 season, and what better time than Homecoming! We've Only Just Begun was this year’s Homecoming Dance theme. The Esquires played soft, soothing, slightly fast songs that put everyone in the groove of things. Then, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived. Debbie Wilson, Steve David, Luann Taylor, Ron Umbarger, Mary Comp- ton, and Ed Sapp waited in suspense for Senior Class president, Jim Fish, to announce the king and queen. The new royalty, Debbie Wilson and Ron Umbarger were crowned by Melinda Tate and Terry Tyler, 1970 king and queen in a scenery of multicolored flowers on the stage. Festivities then continued for the rest of the very en- joyable evening. The 1971 Home- coming will probably go down in Homer High School history as one of the best ever. Homecoming Homecoming Court: Mary Compton, Ed Sapp, Luann Taylor, and Steve David. 1971 Homecoming brings 1971 Homecoming got off to an explosive start. The cheerleaders and the teachers presented rousing and humorous skits that furnished the basis for our soaring Homecoming spirits. All of the colorful and original floats reflected the growing anxiety for a Homer football victory. One float particularly stood out from among the others as the first prize was awarded to the green, green freshmen. The sophomores and jun- iors tied for second place, and the GREAT SENIORS sailed into an easy third. A great Homecoming victory tied the knot. And now, for my next act . . . . The freshmen and their winning float??? Hey guys, what’s the joke? a Week of Activities Attendants, Ron Umbarger and Donna James; King and Queen, Larry Wakefield and Luann Taylor; Attendants, Deb bie Walters and Greg Dodd. Just nine days before Valentine’s Day, the F. H. A. sponsored the revival of the once-traditional Sweetheart Dance. The gym was a bevy of red and pink hearts with white cupids, culminating in one huge red heart, serving as backdrop for the coronation love seat. Within this romantic setting, many couples danced to the beat of the band, AMERICA. Terry Libka, master of ceremonies, introduced the crownbearer and crowner, Janet Collins, reigning Little Miss F.H.A. The big moment finally arrived when Terry announced the 1972 Sweetheart Dance King and Queen as being Larry Wakefield and Luann Taylor. The new king and queen led the rest of the court in dancing to the theme song, Colour My World. As most people agree, it was a very fitting welcome to the traditional Valentine’s Day. 68 Hold tight everyone! Sweetheart Dame Brings Back Zradition “Zke Doctor in Spite of Mint self Little did Molier know that approximately three centuries after he wrote THE DOCTOR IN SPITE OF HIMSELF Homer High School would present it as their Junior-Senior class play. Things started rolling as Martine, after having been beaten by her roguish husband Sganarelle, vows revenge in the form of making him a doctor in spite of himself, who won't admit to it unless beaten by a big stick. The plot thickens as Sganarelle becomes deeply involved in the affairs of a young love-struck girl, Lucinde, who pretends that she is dumb to avoid marrying the man her father wants her to marry. In the end, her true-love, Leandre, runs away with her with the intent to marry her, but the couple return just in time to acquit Sganarelle in the presence of a hanging mob. Lucinde's father, Geronte, finally accepts Leandre as his future son-in- law after hearing of his great inheritance. The play has a typical and they lived happily everafter ending, with Martine and Sganarelle once again united and Leandre and Lucinde together at last. Mr. Mayo, with the assistance of Jim Fish, student director, directed a very hilarious play. The lead role of Sganarelle was played very comically by Mark McLane. He was well-supported by the good per- formances of Kathy Kasper as Martine, Jim Fish as Monsieur Robert, Tom Clark as Valere, Ed Sapp as Lucas, Kent Webb as Geronte; Jo Krukewitt as Jacqueline, Cindy Clarke as Lucinde, Terry Libka as Leandre, Mike Sims as Thibaut, and Ron Flessner as Perrin. Then, of course, what production of THE DOCTOR IN SPITE OF HIM- SELF would be complete without the hanging mob of Judy Allen, Mary Lou Baird, Lynda James, Peggy Morgan, Debbie Morrow, Art Saupe, Linda Samson, Barb Strawser, and Ron Umbarger. All in all, the play provided an evening of hilarious entertainment for people of all ages. 70 In Front: Jim Fish, student director; Mr. Mayo, director. The band played really-danceable music! It was Saturday evening, May 6, that the dance of every girl’s dreams finally arrived--Prom. This year the juniors chose as their setting the Colony Room of the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel, decorated with an Oriental flare. The guests enjoyed a typical American ham dinner with only a few brave ones trying to eat with their chopsticks. With most of the dishes cleared away, the guests settled back to listen to Mr. Wallace Wax, guest speaker, give a very inspirational talk about goals. Then it was cut-down time, as the seniors, represented by Terry Libka and Rick Varvel, gave the Senior Hatchet. Then the juniors retaliated swiftly with their hatchet presented by Tom Clark. Nancy Nale, star reporter, interviewed certain will-be movie stars, barkeepers, detectives, canned laughter makers, and other such notorious professionals, referring to the soon-to-graduate seniors. The dance, with the theme of For All We Know, finally began with music by All Together. The evening climaxed at 10:30 with the crowning of Mark McLane and Janet Meade as the 1972 Prom King and Queen. At 11:30 activities then shifted to the RKO Orpheum Theatre where all the night people survived a hectic car chase through the streets of San Francisco as they viewed the hilarious What’s Up Doc? As most will agree, it was an evening to remember as it offered from punch to sherbert to music, and even to Ryan O'Neal!! Obviously, Tom enjoys cutting the seniors! Mr. Wax enjoys his talk, too. graduation— Our Cast Class Picture 1st row: Luann Taylor, Kathy Smith, Linda Samson, Valerie Robertson, Mary Compton. 2nd row: Debbie Morrow, Donna James, Vicki Clarke, Janet Meade, Debbie Wilson, Debbie Robards, Patsy Lawrence, Debbie Walters, Melinda Dodd. 3rd row: Greg Dodd, Paul Alexander, Mark McLane, Gary Moore, Ed Sapp, Terry Libka, Larry Wakefield, Steve David. 4th row: Mike Sims, Rick Varvel, Ron Flessner, Ron Umbarger, Jim Fish, Randy Edwards, Richard Copass, Art Saupe. Debbie, Prof. Bolen, and Kathy address the graduation night audience. The traditional Pomp and Circumstance be- came the prominent theme of thirty-one seniors as they marched into the gym--their last time together as a class. Kathy Smith, salutatorian, following the Rev. John Simmons who gave the invocation, presented the class with some thoughts to ponder about the future. She was followed by Professor Charles W. Bolen of Illinois State University who spoke upon commitment. Debbie Morrow, valedictorian, reminisced about life during the past twelve years. It was a night for awards as Ron Umbarger and Linda Samson were double winners receiving both the American Legion Award and the Lions' Club Scholarship. Art Saupe was named the recipient of the Homer Bank Scholarship. Finally the moment the seniors had been waiting for arrived as Wes Tyler, President of the Board of Education, presented the class of 1972 with their diplo- mas. The moment had come and passed too quickly. Our joys and sorrows, our fun and problems as a class were behind us. Now we are individuals. The Panthers came out this year with the thought of having another winning season but due to the lack of experienced players, the Panthers had a disappointing year. There was only one game in which the Panth- ers won. Homer had a few other close games. One of those games was at Oakland when the Panthers were ahead only to lose in the clos- ing minutes. The other game was against Newman when Homer was able to hang on for a tie. The Panthers have much hope for the future as they have nineteen re- turning lettermen. Many of these lettermen started for the Panthers this past season. The Panthers can expect to get back on the winning road as this experienced crop of let- termen should provide a title con- tender in 1972. The Panthers won eleven straight Little Okaw games; they won the Consolation bracket of the Charleston Holiday Tournament, the Little Okaw Tournament, and the Little Okaw championship. The Panthers had many close calls during the season. In the second game of the little Okaw Tournament, the Panthers had to go into overtime to beat Bement. In the final game Homer edged Cerro Gordo by 3 points for the champion- ship. The future looks good for the Panthers.
