The first person to catch our eye is the handsome, sophisticated, international playboy, George Heppe, attended by the playboy bunny of the year. Candy Wienke. Who should be serving them drinks but your friendly bar maid, Helen Wolf. The next drink is served to Paxton Quig- ly, better known to his classmates as Tim Ingram. Tim tells us that there is going to be an exhibition given by the Great Es- cape Artist, Greg Mohr. Out by the pool, we find the homemaker of the year, Tim Taylor. Next to attract our attention are two men arguing. They are none other than Randy Walters, who is a judge, and Kirk Webb, who is a public defendant. A lady policeman comes up and stops the fight, and we recognize her as Ginny Dillon. To help Ginny comes Kathy Stanley, the great woman wrestler. Who else should step in but Cassius Clay II, Don Bennett. After Kathy calms Don, Denny Sy, the man from the North, starts talking and he says that on T.V. there is the roller derby queen, Pat King in the roller derby champ- ionship. After the roller derby, we see a rodeo where Becky Greer is champion cowgirl. Then none other than Nancy Davis flashes across the screen leading the Dodge Rebellion. Nancy tells us to stay tuned to the Malcolm McLane daily road race show. This show is sponsored by David Kern, the cobplant owner, and Paul Saupe, your insecticide dealer, called Grasshopper. Who do we see in Malcolm’s pit? Vicki Brandon, the famous pit stop girl, and Judy Wolf, marriage counselor, giving Vicki some advice. McLane pulls his car out on the track and all of a sudden is passed by The Hippie of the Hippiest drivers, and it is none other than Dick Moore. Then right after Dick comes flying by the Hippie Barber car, or should I say the Hippiest Bar- ber in town comes by, and it is John Stauter. The intercom comes on, and we hear a familiar voice, Tom Tyler. Tom is telling the crowd about the finishing of the race. He said that Ralph Whitt is down in the pits on his hands and knees brown-nosing the judge. By this time, all the people must know about Ralph, a Professional Brown Noser. We got hungry after the race so we stopped in at the closest ice cream parlor, and we found Elaine Scott behind the table. Then Sue Allison came by selling her world-famous cupcakes. Just as we are getting ready to go, Jim Rogers and Jo Ellen Woodside come into the room. Jim and Jo are the proud owners of the biggest health frog farm around. And that’s the way it is. 37 Sue Allison-G.A.A. 1,2,3,4—Chorus 1,2-F.H.A. 1,2,3,4-Tatler 1,2,3,4 Jr.-Sr. Play 3. Don Bennett—(Transferred from Unity 3)-H-Club 3,4-Basketball 3,4-Football 4—Track 3,4. Panthers Stomp the Bobcats. “Is it that bad John?' Pop, Pop, Pop. 58 As a climax to a week of fun, float building, decorating, and spirit boosting, the activities of September 26 and 27, 1968, will not soon be forgotten. On Thursday, the 26th, the students had a rousing pep session, followed by a parade of floats, candidates for king, and queen, and the royal court. That night, a snake dance started in the depot lot and winding through town, ended at the school where a pep rally was held. An effigy of a Rossville player was burned in the mighty Panther’s bonfire. Friday evening, the inspired Panthers swept to a well- fought victory over a tough Rossville team. The final score was 12-0. The Sophomores won the float competition. With high spirits, everyone was eager for the Homecom- ing dance, highlight of Homecoming ’68! It was held in the high school gym. The floor had been transformed with unique decorations into what appeared to be a moonlit gar- den with an old-fashioned brick wishing well in one corner. A new innovation was that the band, The Fresh Clover Blues, played from the floor instead of from the stage. At eleven o’clock, the coronation ceremony started. Mr. Gilhaus announced the royal court: Freshmen—Donna James and Dick Sy, Sophomores—Melinda Tate and Rick Knight, Juniors—Ginger Mott and Mark Baird. The Senior candidates walked up onto the grass-covered stage. From the candidates of George Heppe, Dennis Ro- bards, Tim Ingram, Judy Wolf, Jo Ellen Woodside, and Nancy Davis, the king and queen were announced. Denny Robards and Nancy Davis were crowned by last year’s queen and king, Marilyn Koerner and Brad Mohr. Denny and Nancy then led the coronation dance as many bright-colored balloons drifted down. The entertainment and dancing continued until midnight, and all agreed that Homecoming ’68 would be fondly remembered. Homecoming '68' Some couples stand and listen while others dance. St. Patrick's One dark, snowy night in March, the 8th to be exact, the mystical lepre- chaun began to work his magic in Homer High Gymnasium. The Saint Patrick’s Day Dance, sponsored by the F.H.A and the F.F.A. got off to a run- ning start with the great music of the Okey Doaks. With two life-size lepre- chauns watching them from either side, the boys played their music all night. 60 Day Dance Promptly at 10:30, the new Miss F.H.A. and Mr. F.F.A. were an- nounced. Congratulations went to Jo Ellen Woodside and Rick Knight who were elected by their organi- zations to reign for the coming year. The evening was finished out with more dancing, and at 11:30, the spell of the leprechaun was broken as every- one had to go home and wait another year for the leprechaun to work his mysterious magic again. Greg must be telling another joke. 61 Cast: Tijuana Armes, Geraldine Hargrave; Becky Greer, Nella Hargrave; Bob Smith, Brocton; Malcolm McLane, Malvern Larkfield; Vicki Brandon, Felicity Fair; Paul Saupe, Cyril Bothingwell; Marilyn Messman, Regina Larkfield; Judy Wolf, Lona The villain, Cyril, threatens Brocton, the butler. Malvern and Felicity meet for the first time and suffer “true love.” Jim Walters provides the musical accompa- niment for the production. Pert Denise speaks saucily to Dr. Belch. The Junior and Senior classes this year presented an action-packed, sus- pense-filled “meller drama” entitled “Caught In the Villain’s Web,” or “More Sinned Against Than Sin- ning.” The charming hero, Malvern (Mal- colm McLane), falls in love with the beautiful heroine. Felicity Fair (Vicki Brandon). Their happiness is almost thwarted by the evil villain, Cyril (Paul Saupe), and Malvern’s conniv- ing mother, Regina (Marilyn Mess- man). Regina attempts to force Mal- vern to marry the shallow and artifi- cial Nella Hargrave (Becky Greer) who has a complaining mother, Geraldine (Tijuana Armes). Regina’s scheming involves the good Dr. Belch (Randy Walters), with her flirtatious 62 Caught in the Villain's Web Or More Sinned Against Than Sinning Vicki warbles “Bird in a Gilded Cage.” French maid, Denise (Kathy Stanley), and the unassuming butler, Brocton (Bob Smith), and also sire nearly loses her sweet, innocent daughter, Lona (Judy Wolf), to the evil Cyril. All’s well that ends well, though, and as always, good overpowers evil, and everyone lives happily ever after. For entertainment during the in- termissions, Vicki Brandon did a stirring rendition of “Bir In a Gilded Cage,” and Kathy Stanley sang “you Can’t Repay the Debt You Owe Your Mother.” Paul Messman did a hilarious rendition of Henry Gibson. The play was a roaring (and egg- throwing) success with a good turn- out on both nights. A tense moment after Brocton has shot the evil villain, Cyril. 63 64 Junior-Senior Prom On May 16, 1969, the Junior class of good, old H.H.S. put on a splendid prom for its Seniors. The Urbana Lincoln Hotel in Urbana was the setting for the banquet and prom. A dining room with white stone pillars along both sides was chosen. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal of swiss steak and the after-dinner speaker, Larry Johnson, State’s Attor- ney gave a very interesting speech. The class hatchets were read by John Stauter and Bob Smith, and the prophesy was read by Jeff Burton and Steve Wakefield, Both of the ora- tions brought laughter to the crowd. Dance music was fur- nished by the Del Rays until eleven-thirty when everyone shed their formal clothes and headed for post-prom. At the Urbana Bowl, a delightful evening of fun and dancing was set off with an equally fun-filled post-prom. There was bowling, pool, and music for recreation, a lounge to relax in, and sandwiches, potato chips, and all the pop we could drink to keep us busy. At three o’clock on Satur- day morning, everyone went on their way, either to another party, to eat breakfast, or to drowsily collapse into bed. Congratulations, Juniors, for sponsoring such a wonderful prom! 65 1st row: Judy Wolf, Vicki Brandon, Ginny Dillon, Becky Greer, Nancy Davis. 2nd row: Sue Wakefield, Kathy Stanley, Sue Allison, Candy Wienke, Helen Wolf, Pat King, Jo Ellen Woodside, Elaine Scott. 3rd row: Jim Strawser, Greg Mohr, Randy. Varsity Tops the Conference Coach Bruce Miller and his Panthers captured the E.C.C. football crown by compiling a record of 7-0. This is the first time Homer has ever won the title. The Panther’s first game was at home against Bismarck. Homer defeated the Blue Devils, 42-18. Denny Robards liad a total of six touchdowns. The next game was against the Catlin Wolverines and Homer defeated them 37-27. Homecoming was next with Rossville. Panthers downed the Bobcats 12-0. Homer’s third successive home game was with ABL. The hungry Panthers beat them 53-6. The Panthers then traveled to Ridgefarm, spoiling their Homecoming by a 40-7 win, and then traveled on to Jamai- ca and defeated the Cardinals by an overwhelming score of 60-0. The next game was one the Panthers had been waiting for. It was the final game of the year against the St. Joe— Ogden Spartans. Homer took an early lead and things were looking very good. Panthers’ quarterback, Ken Whitt, was injured and saw very limited action the rest of the game. The Spartans took advantage and swiped the lead—14-12 with a minute to go. The Panthers’ got the ball; reserve quarterback Terry Tyler handed off to Ralph Whitt, and he ran 50 yards for a T.D. to win the game for Homer. The final score was 18-14, and Homer had won its first E.C.C. crown. 70 Denny Robards All Conference All Area Little All State Elite 11 -Area Kirk Webb All Conference All Area Little All State- Honorable Mention Elite 11 —Area Ralph Whitt All Conference All Area Tom Tyler All Conference Bob Smith All Conference Don Bennett All Conference-Spe- cial Mention All Area- Honorable Mention Kenny Whitt All Conference-Spe cial Mention Phil Sands All Conference-Spe- cial Mention All Area- Honorable Mention Jeff Burton All Conference- Hon- orable Mention Malcolm McLane All Conference- Spe- cial Mention Joe Stanfield All Conference—Spe- cial Mention Tim Taylor All Conference- Hon- orable Mention Joe James All Conference- Hon orable Mention 7) 1st row: Rick Knight, Brad Mohr, Dave Webb, Van Madding, Glenn Couch, Allen Lawrence, Dave Morrison, Neal Webb, Merle Griffin. 2nd row: Ed Sapp, Albert Sapp, Elliot Lewis, Jeff Burton, Terry Tyler, Joe James, Mark Baird, Rick Crom- well, Mike Hurbert. J.V.'s Show Varsity Spirit Homer’s Junior Varsity squad, coached by Bob Skinner, compiled a record of 3-2 this year. The J.V.’s spent most of the season traveling, having their first four games away. The first game was played at Bismarck, where the Junior Panthers were defeated, 7-12. They then moved on to Cat- lin where Homer stomped the Wolverines, 33-0. Again, at Rossville, the Panthers were victorious, sneaking by the Bobcats 13-12. ABL was forth on the J.V.’s list, but ABL stopped the Panthers with a score of 6-24. The final game was played at home against the fighting Ridgefarm team, where Homer came out on top—21-13. 72 Dave Morrison, number 87, leads Panthers out to victory field. Coach Miller and Coach Skinner give Joe Stanfield, number 90, and other Panthers last minute pep talk. Ken Whitt, number 13, carries ball to gain yardage for mighty Panthers. 73 Panthers-IN ACTION! The center portion was used this past fall for football games, and is now being used inside for basketball games along with the name and foul panels. This was purchased and installed by interested cit- izens. In the lower picture is shown the new scorers and timers’ bench which was constructed and donated by local citizens. The Homer Schools would like to thank all citizens for any and all financial dona- tions, time and labor, or efforts of any kind to make the scoreboard and bench a reality. These two additions now provide Homer with one of the finest facilities in the area for scor- ing and timing athletic events.
