Everyone worked hard during Homecoming Week preparing their floats. Homecoming officially began on Thursday night, September 21 st, with the bonfire. Friday, spirit was running high. A pep session followed by the parade of floats and candidates, took place in the afternoon. That night, the Homer Panthers charged on to a 20-0 victory over the Callin Wolverines. The theme of the Sophomore’s winning float, “Panthers Will Raid ’Em,” became a reality. The finale of Homecoming Week was the dance, which started at 8:30 Saturday evening. The “Wonders” provided the mu- sic and completed the “Misty” atmosphere created by blue decorations and a bubbling pool. As the concert band began Pomp and Circumstance”, at 8:00 p.m.. twenty-six nervous Seniors entered the gym. The Rev- erend Paul Holland gave the invocation, and the welcome was given by Karen Brewer, Salutatorian. Following the band’s presentation of “Colonel Bogy March”, Mr. Clay introduced Dr. Byron T. Kerns, who was the speak- er for the evening. He spoke on “Living with Oneself.” Janice Morrison, Valedictorian, gave the farewell address. Clyde Parliament then presented the American Legion Good Citi- zen Awards to Jancie Morrison and Kent Krukewitt. The concert band, which played Rhythm of the Winds” was followed by Mr. Gilpin who presented the awards. Don Humphrey received the Lions Club Scholarship and Steve Rhodes received the Homer Bank Scholarship. The class of 1968 was then presented to Donald Tate. President of the Board of Education, who gave out the diplomas. The Benediction was given by Reverend Paul Holland, and the band then played the recessional. As the Seniors became official graduates of Homer High School, they were ready to live up to their class motto “We have opened the door; the world lies before us.” 73 74 Senior Class History In the fall of 1964, twenty-eight “better than average” greenies entered the hallowed halls of Homer High School. Although our freshman status proved to be a challenge, we soon fell into swing of things. That year, we gained one new member, Hyde Hayworth, and our officers were: PRESIDENT Karen Brewer VICE-PRESIDENT Jim Knight SECRETARY Melody Cope TREASURER Karen Rechkemmer STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES Daisy Buchanan and Janice Morrison Mr. Van der Linden was our sponsor. Our sophomore year found us one year older and one year wiser. It sure was great to be out of the greenie stage!! Although we had one new member, Linda Hill, we lost Hyde Hayworth, Robert Thompson, Connie Smith, and Patti Whitt from our ranks. The courageous leaders of our sophomore class were: PRESIDENT Don Humphrey VICE-PRESIDENT Danny Mitchell 2ND VICE-PRESIDENT Marilyn Koerner SECRETARY Jackie Melton TREASURER Peggy Taylor STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE Janice Morrison Miss Hocker and Mr. Heldebrandt (bless their souls) dared to be the sponsors of our class and superivsed over our free-for-alls, commonly known as class meetings. Somehow we managed to survive biology hay infusions and dissections, Julius Caesar, and Driver’s Education, as we found ourselves the Jolly Juniors of Homer High School. Most of our time was spent in planning such activities as the Junior-Senior play and the prom. And of course, no H.H.S. Junior class would be complete without the pop machine. Two new members of our class were Diane Scott and Steve Rhodes. Our officers were: PRESIDENT Ray Compton VICE-PRESIDENT Karen Brewer 2ND VICE-PRESIDENT Peggy Taylor SECRETARY Karen Rechkemmer TREASURER Marilyn Koerner STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE Kent Krukewitt Mr. Dunn joined Miss Hocker as a sponsor of our class. Our senior year officially began on August 29, 1967, and our class rings soon arrived. We pledged ourselves to keeping the freshmen in line, and we kept our promise. Throughout the year, we were occupied with Homecoming preparations, success- ful football and basketball seasons, Homerian deadlines, the Junior-Senior play and Graduation. Although we lost one class- mate, Linda Hill, we still numbered twenty-six able-bodied upperclassmen. The Sophisticated Senior officers were: PRESIDENT Peggy Taylor VICE-PRESIDENT Steve Rhodes 2ND VICE-PRESIDENT Don Humphrey SECRETARY Wes King TREASURER Daisy Buchanan STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES Diane Scott and Ray Compton Once again our sponsors were Miss Hocker and Mr. Dunn. Looking back on our four years at H.H.S., we find that they were enjoyable, hectic, at times disappointing, and memo- rable. Although we realize we will never be together again as a class, our paths will continue to cross in the future. And so, Homer High School, the Class of 1968 bids you farewell. The Panthers were hopeful of a conference championship but fell short for the second straight year. Favored along with St. Joseph-Ogden and Bismarck, the Panthers traveled to the latter’s field to open the season and set up an early showdown between the two contenders. The Maroon Gold, however, fell to the Blue Devils 27-6. Wes King was injured on the fourth play of the game and missed the rest of the year. We entertained Catlin for Homecoming and started a six-game winning streak by ripping the Wolverines 20-0. Rossville almost upset the Panther Express by falling only 7-6. Arch rival A.B.L. proved no match for Homer as they were defeated 37-12, with Texas transfer Denny Robards scoring 4 TDs. Next on the agenda was Ridge Farm, who could do no better than lose 27-7 as the Panthers scored 3 touchdowns in the last half to erase a 7-6 deficit. Milford came down to play the only non-conference game on the schedule. The Bearcats went back a 14-7 loser. Jamaica’s Cardinals were totally demolished by the mighty Panthers 40-0. Ralph Whitt had a great game by scoring 26 points. Once again the title hung on the final game of the year between Homer and St. Joseph-Ogden; but on that muddy field November 3, 1967, nothing went right for the mighty Panthers and they were downed 27-0. Yes, 27 is an unlucky number for Homer! With many of the lettermen back, the Class of 1968 wishes Homer the best of luck next year and feel that YOU can win the conference crown and can BEAT St. Joseph-Ogden! 78 Jim Knight Jerry Stanfield Calvin Griffin Steve Doak ECC-Special Mention ECC-Special Mention ECC-Special Mention ECC-Special Mention Defensive Back Defensive Tackle Offensive Guard Defensive Tackle Denny Robards Joe Stanfield Kenny Whitt ECC—Special Mention ECC—Special Mention ECC-Honorable Mention Offensive Halfback Offensive End Defensive Halfback Kneeling: Albert Sapp, Tom Tyler, David Morrison, Cliff Doak, Brad Mohr, Ron Bonesteel, Jeff Burton, Joe James, Jim Baird, Glenn Couch. Yes, for the first time in 15 years Horner had a basketball team better than .500; the 1968 version of Homer bas- ketball finished the season 15-11! The recovery was aided by the presence of eight returning lettermen which included trans- fer, Don Bennett. The team was by the guidance of new head coach. Bob Gilhaus. The season started out on the right step as the Panthers toppled Jamaica 58-53. However, the second victory followed two losses as Homer spanked Kansas 86-75 with Ray Compton dumping 30 points. Villa Grove was the next victim, as they fell 88- 73 to the Panthers with Steve Doak canning 10 for 10 on field goal attempts. After a bout with the flu, which had almost the entire squad out for a while. Coach Gilhaus’ crew went into the County Tournament with a 5-6 record, healthy; and Don Bennett, who had just become eligible, joined the squad. In quarter final action, the Panthers whacked Fisher 65-45 for their second victory over the Bunnies in three days. Then the shot! With no time on the clock, Don Bennett sank a 25 footer to push Homer past Mahomet-Seymour 61-60 in overtime. However, Unity’s Rockets dropped the spirited Panthers 70-59 for the title. Homer then won five of their last regular season battles to finish the regular season at 12-10. It might be noted that the Panthers won seven of eight home court duals. In District action the Panthers had two worthy achievements. For the first time EVER in Varsity competition, Homer knocked off A.B.L. by a 68-55 count. This avenged an early season heartbreaking loss to them of 53-52. In capturing the Dis- trict crown by nipping Ridgefarm 54-52 on a shot by Denny Sy with 10 seconds left, it marked the first time the trophy had come to Homer since 1953. The spirited Panthers and the spirited town traveled over to Danville where the spunky Panthers dropped the Vikings 58- 56. Once again cool heads prevailed as Tim Ingram put the victors ahead on a bucket with 25 seconds remaining. Two nights later the eighth-ranked team in the state, Danville Schlarman, paced by their fabulous all-state Greg Davis, ended the year for the Panthers by winning an 83-49 game. So, the successful season was at a close. Tim Ingram and Denny Sy were the point leaders with Don Bennett having the highest average because of his fewer games. With these three returning, along with Ralph Whitt and a fine bunch of others, the future looks bright for Homer, though special tribute should be paid to the Seniors. This year’s season was not a one-man show, instead a whole TEAM’S effort. Team effort is what it takes to win. In most games nine to ten Panthers played. A most-valuable player for this year’s team was not selected; but, instead, a most-valuable team was elected. Steve Doak and Kent Krukewitt paced the free throw accuracy with Steve canning 45 of 61 attempts, and Kent 18 of 24. Jim Knight. Kent Krukewitt, Steve Doak, Wes King, and Ray Compton all leave the ranks and will be missed. Once again best of luck next year for Homer in basketball, the losing spell has been broken! 83 Don Bennett Denny Sy Tim Ingram ECC-Special Mention All ECC ECC-Honorable Mention Si Dick Moore Ralph Whitt Greg Mohr 85 Junior V ars Kneeling Elaine Gunselman Nancy Rohrscheib Standing Donna Webb Tijuana Armes 86 87 Kneeling: Tom Tyler, Joe James. John Stauter Track The 1968 Homer track team under Coach Miller was determined to have as successful a year as the football and basketball teams did, and they did have a good year. Because of bad weather the Panther cindermen were able to compete in only four dual meets; and, in doing so, they won two of these meets. Throughout the year the Panthers were strong in field events and certain running events; but because of weakness in other events, the Panthers could not quite muster enough points to challenge in the large meets. In the ECC meet that lasted for two days the Panthers were ahead at the conclusion of the first day. This was due to the strong performances of the weight team consisting of Denny Sy, Steve Doak, and Jerry Stanfield. However, the next day of running was not quite the Panthers’ day as they could rack up only one first. Denny Robards did that by winning the 100-yard dash. Homer eventually finished second in the meet despite the fact that they were 30 points behind the winner. In the County track meet the Panthers finished a disappointing fifth though key injuries were a cause of this. One of the highlights of the track year was the 880-yard varsity relay. The unit consisting of Don Bennett, George Heppe, Wes King, and Denny Robards was one of the tops in the area. They captured first in the County and the Little All-State held at East Lynn. At the District they ran a 1:35:6 race which was good enough for fifth, and they were less than a second away from qualifying to go to the State meet. 88 89 Forward-Ho, Joe! A special thanks goes to Mrs. Kerr who has helped so much and has taken classtime to assist us. Without your patience and co- operation, Mrs. Kerr, we would have never made a deadline. We thoroughly enjoyed assembling this 50th edition of Homerian for your enjoyment and entertainment. It hasn't been all fun and games, although it may have sounded that way from out in the hall, but we have a year of experience behind us and many fond memories. We want to wish the best of luck to everyone and we hope your years to come will be very prosperous. The yearbook is now turned over to you from us; we hope you will enjoy it.
