1967 HOMERIAN Volume 49 Homer High School Homer, Illinois Farewell Four years is a long time --too long to forget. We look around and ask --where did it go? We worked, we had fun --but for four years? Now we look the other way --into tomorrow. Suddenly we’re not so tall as we thought we were And not so smart. But we find that somehow We learned a decisive lesson at Homer --a direction into that uncertain tomorrow. Our futures will always hold hope Though tlie world may change And the times change And we change. ddmnMiattwt ■n« i M QWtancaMi Robert Gilpin Principal Harold Clay Superintendent Principal’s Message Seniors, you have obtained one of the most important goals of life in the current civilization in which you must live. So I would say to you graduates that your educational background has been substantially strengthened in high school. Use it to guide and direct you to live a respectable life in our society. As the Fighting Panthers completed their first test with Bismarck, the score indicated a marked improvement in the Homer squad. Although the final score was 7-6 in favor of the Blue Devils, the Panthers had outplayed the favored victors throughout the game. Displaying confidence gained from the first outing, the Panthers romped over Catlin 21-7, swept past Rossville 14- 6, scored a real big Homecoming victory over arch-rival ABL 7-0, and showed a determined attitude by coming from behind to overcome Ridgefarm 19-13. Milford, a non-conference foe, then slowed the Panthers with a 12-20 decision for the much larger Milford squad on their Homecoming night. Despite the defeat, Homer had made a gallant effort to upset Milford. The Panther squad then fought extra hard to upset Jamaica 13-12. This set the stage for an ECC title showdown with the unscored upon and undefeated St. Joe-Ogden. Homer showed no fear by scoring upon the Spartans first, but despite clawing for the victory to the last second, fell to St. Joe-Ogden 7-6 thus losing the ECC title by a total of two points in two games. Better than three-fourths of the losses were showing deficits of ten points or less. For three quarters the squad remained in close contention, but the experience then showed as the fourth quarter became Homer's downfall. In East Central Conference games, the Panthers lost six games by an approximate average of six points per game. A strong St. Joe-Ogden five was the only conference foe to win by a commanding margin. The Panthers countered for that by overrunning Rossville's Bobcats in a well-played contest. Although the victories were difficult to come by, Homer provided an exciting brand of ball for basketball fans. Perhaps this year's squad began a comeback trail with their never-give-up spirit. Experience should be no problem in the near future and the momentum has been provided by this year's group. We are hoping that the hard work will pay off. Good work 1967 basketball squad. With a few breaks the record might have looked much differently. From this year's Fighting Panthers, good luck in the future! Yet as the season progressed, it became obvious that this small squad of Fighting Panthers possessed a large amount of quality. Usually running against squads two to three times their size, the Panthers were always scoring as many points as possible. In the larger meets, the Homer team also played a factor al- though lacking the quantity to take the whole meet. The highlight of the season came in the County track meet. There, the Pan- ther mile relay team won the event in a record-breaking time of 3:40. 6. This feat put them within 1. 7 seconds of the school record. In the last attempt, at a cold district, the mile relay team ran a 3:39. 6, missing the school record by . 7 of a second. While the relay team was improving with each meet, other school records were being set in the triple jump and the two mile run, and a record was tied in the low hurdles. Thus four records were being threatened by a squad of fifteen members. All in all, it is obvious that the Panthers made a tremendous effort, making the track season a success. 34 Actioitm Homecoming 1966 Happiness Is was the theme of the 1966 Homecoming activities, October 6-8. Happiness prevailed throughout the activities, especially at the football game Friday night when the Panthers defeated the ABL Trojans 7-0. The festivities began at a bonfire and snake dance Thursday night. A parade through town featuring the kind and queen candidates and floats, and a rousing pep assembly highlighted Friday afternoon. The junior and sophomore classes were happy when it was announced at the game that their floats had received 1st and 2nd place in the competition. The theme of the winning float was Happiness Is Taming the Trojans. The activities were carried over until Saturday when Lois Lee and the Rockets were featured at the dance. The gym, decorated in shades of orchid and purple with a bubbling fountain and a large revolving mirrored ball, carried out the theme of Three Coins In a Fountain. King and queen candidates were introduced by Mr. Ted Beastall at the ap- pointed hour. Those representing the classes and organization were: Georgi Davis and Jerry Krugh - Student Council; Beverly Strawser and Mike Rechkemmer - FSA-Jets; Rosanne Stauter and Carl Plotner - FHA FFA; Tina Kibler and Dale Cope - GAA H-Club; Nancy Rohrscheib and Mike Meade - Freshman Class; Marsha Gordon and Tom Tyler - Sophomore Class; Marilyn Koerner and Danny Mitchell - Junior Class; Debby Durst and Dave Melton - Senior Class. The crowners were Ann and Scott Trees, and the crownbearers were Jill Craver and Gary Cromwell. Happiness came to Georgi Davis and Jerry Krugh when they were crowned the 1966 Homecoming queen and king. The Sweetheart Dance was not new--but the deco- rations certainly were. On February 11, 1967, the Flame, A sidewalk cafe in the Homer High School gym was the scene of romantic festivities. Around great round tables adorned by checkered tablecloths and one dimly-lit candle, sat couples having punch and cookies that the Future Homemakers had prepared. In a roped-off area other couples danced to music performed by Terry Cook and the Majesties. The dance which started at 8:00 p. m. was high- lighted by the coronation at 9:30 p. m. Debby Durst, as mistress of ceremonies, introduced first the crown bearers, Jimmy Wolf and Patty Freeman, and the royal couple of 1966, Melissa Wienke and Rodney Kibler, to crown this year's royalty. The candidates were: JoEllen Woodside and Mike Rechkemmer representing FSA-Jets; Barbara Tate and Don Wolf, FHA and FFA; Rosanne Stauter and Roger Bogan, GAA and H-Club; Janice Morrison and Alan Wienke, Student Council; Linda Moore and Dale Cope, Seniors; Melody Cope and Steve Doak, Juniors; Helen Wolf and Denny Sy, Sophomores; Lynda Edwards and Kenny Whitt, Freshmen. Finally the long-awaited moment arrived and Miss Durst announced that the new Queen and King of Hearts were Barbara Tate and Mike Rechkemmer. The royal couple then danced to their theme song Cherish. They and many others who came to the dance will probably cherish that starry night as one of the most memorable nights of their high school career. Sweetheart Dance 38 Jr.-$r. Play — Mother Is A Freshman After weeks of hard work the play, MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN, was presented on April 7, 1967, by the Juniors and Seniors. The cast of the highly successful comedy included: Cathie Martens - Marge; Barb Tate - Carrie; Alan Wienke - Bill; Janice Morrison - Clara Fettle; Jerry Krugh - Dean Gillingham; Jim Knight - Bobo Jackson; Mike Rechkemmer - Professor Michaels; Rosanne Stauter - Abigail Fortitude Abbott; Debby Durst - Susan Abbott; Peggy Brown - Sylvia; Roger Bogan - Howie; Karen Rechkemmer - Bunny; Carl Plotner - Jack; Tina Kibler - Helen Gurke; Jackie Melton - Mrs. Miller; Mrs. Harmon - Director; Georgi Davis - Student Director; Jeridan Rhoton - Stage Manager. Jr.-Sr. Prom On May 19, 1967, the Junior class of Homer High School sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The banquet and the dance were held at the Holiday Inn in Champaign. The theme for the dance was The Shadow of Your Smile, and the music for the dance was provided by the Shat- tertones. Mr. Clay started the banquet by giving the invocation. After the banquet, Ray Compton, president of the Junior class, gave the welcome. Following Ray, Mr. Gilpin introduced the guest speaker, Tom Jones of WCIA TV. Mr. Jones gave a very enlightening talk on Happiness which included several amusing stories. The Junior and Senior classes then proceeded to bury the hatchet with the Hatchet Orations by Janice Morrison and Mike Rechkemmer. The prophecy for the class of 1967 was then read by Paula Bertram and Karen Rechkemmer. Mike Rechkemmer, president of the Senior class, concluded the program by giving the farewell. The dance was following the banquet. After the Prom, post-prom activities were enjoyed at the Urbana Bowl. Bowling, pool, dancing, and food were en- joyed by those attending. A hearty thanks is extended to the Juniors for making the 1967 banquet, Prom, and post-prom a big success! 40 41 TOO BASHFUL FOR PICTURE Georgiana Davis Mike Rechkemmer BEST DRESSED Debby Durst Dave Melton BEST FIGURES MOST CONCEITED CHAMPION GRUMBLERS Debby Durst Jerry Krugh MOST ATHLETIC Jerry Krugh Barbara Tate Mike Rechkemmer FRIENDLIEST Ann FI arris Calvin Griffin MOST BASHFUL 42 Debby Durst Jim Knight BIGGEST FLIRTS Georgiana Davis Jerry Krugh MR. Class History From the top of the grade school totem pole in May to the bottom of the high school one in September--this was where the eighth grade class landed as they walked, knees knocking, into Homer High School as Freshmen in 1963. Mr. Mikkleton, our sponsor, guided the scaredy-cats through that year with aid provided by our class officers: President, Lanny Mullis; Vice-President, Barbara Tate; Secretary, Rosanne Stauter; Treasurer, Jerry Krugh; Reporter, Elaine Nale. Our Student Council representatives were Mike Rechkemmer and Georgi Davis. During that year we lost two classmates, Jane Smith and Lois Evans. In September, 1964, we became the upper-lowers, better known as the Silly Sophomores, and it sure was great to be out of the greenie stage! Something entranced two other sophs to join our ranks that year, as we gained Kathy Crisalle and Charles Bolton. However, biology, JULIUS CAESAR, or driver's education must have driven away Trudy Morris, Bill Mitchell, and Charles Bolton, because they left, never to return. Sponsors of our class always disappeared after one year with us (wonder why?). Our Silly Soph year Mr. Nabors dared to be our sponsor, working with the following officers; President, Barbara Tate; Vice-President, Rosanne Stauter; Treasurer, Jerry Krugh; Secretary, Tina Kibler; Reporter, Beverly Strawser; and Parliamentarian, Elaine Nale. Again Mike and Georgi were our Student Council representatives. In our Junior year another sponsor fell by the wayside. When Mr. Nabors left, the administration must have thought that our class was too ornery for only one sponsor, so they gave us two--Miss Duncan and Mr. Beastall. Other bad news for the not-so-jolly Juniors was the report that we were not going to have a class trip. Woe and alas! However, to pacify us, Miss Duncan suggested we put on a Junior-Senior Play and a Prom. We did, and they both were outstanding successes. During this busy year we lost one classmate, Larry Shelton. Our officers were President, Dale Cope; Vice-President, Lanny Mullis; Second Vice-President, Jerry Krugh; Treasurer, Jeridan Rhoton; Secretary, Rosanne Stauter; and Student Council representatives, Jerry Krugh and Barbara Tate with Mike Rechkemmer as the Vice-President of the council. 1966-67, our Senior year, got all of us involved in Homecoming, the Junior-Senior Play, theProm, Baccalaureate, and finally, graduation. Busy was NOT the word for us as once again we sat at the top of the totem pole. Between sports, Senior candy sales, Homerian deadlines, and many other pressures, twenty-five Seniors tried to reign high and run all over Homer High School. In the spring of 1966 the voters of the community passed a bond issue which provided for an addition to be built for the school system. This year all the students put up with unusual noises and the smelly tar in the anticipation of breaking in new labs, classrooms, and music facilities. The Sophisticated Senior class officers were: President, Mike Rechkemmer; Vice-President, Jeridan Rhoton; Sec- ond Vice-President, Don Wolf; Secretary, Linda Moore; Treasurer, Lanny Mullis; and Student Council representatives, Mike Rechkemmer and Dale Cope with Jerry Krugh as President of the council. Once more we lost a classmate, Kathy Crisalle, and another sponsor, Miss Duncan, but we gained Mrs. Harmon as our new sponsor. Now another class of Homer High has become alumni. The days, weeks, months, and years at HHS flitted by and now are only fond memories. Like seeds carried by the winds we have scattered, and possibly we will never be all to- gether again (not even to paint the water tower!). The class of 1967 gives a cheer to you, HHS; thanks for four hectic but wonderful years! Graduation On June 1, 1967, twenty-five nervous seniors were making frantic attempts at preparing for their big night. On the forthcoming evening these seniors would become alumni of Homer High School. At 8:00 p. m. the concert band struck up Pomp and Circumstance, and the Class of '67 was on its way. The Rev- erend Paul Holland gave the invocation, followed by Barbara Tate, salutatorian, who welcomed one and all. After the band played National Emblem March, Mr. Clay introduced the speaker of the evening, Dr. Martin Schaefer. Dr. Schaefer, a professor at Eastern Illinois University, spoke to the class about Change, Challenge, and Commitment. The farewell address to the school was given next by the valedictorian, Peggy Brown. The American Legion Good Citi- zens Awards were presented to Georgiana Davis and Jerry Krugh. At the request of the Senior class, the band, directed by Mr. Wayne Brown, prepared Windjammer for graduation and played it at this time. Mr. Gilpin then gave out the scholastic awards, announced that Jerry Krugh was the bank scholarship recipient, and present- ed the class to the President of the Board of Education, Edward Brandon. Mr. Brandon, in turn, presented the Class of 1967 with their diplomas. As the members of the class received their diplo- mas, they each picked up a yellow, long-stemmed rose. 64 65 Senior Activities ROGER BOGAN--H-Club, 2, 3,4; Band, 2, 3,4; Chorus, 4; Football, 1,2, 3; Basketball Manager, 2, Li- brarian, 2,4; Jr. -Sr. Play, 4; Homecoming Candidate, 2; Sweetheart Candidate, 4; Homerian Staff, 4.
