You have jumped your first big hurdle in life's race. There are many more ahead of you, each one presenting a new and different challenge. Your success and happiness in life may well be measured by how well you clear each of these obstacles. Some hurdles are by-passed or run around; others are kicked and slow us down but in achieving personal satisfaction each contestant must clear every hurdle and sprint gamely for the final line. This is my wish for you! May each one meet all challenges along the track and complete the race with pride and satisfaction of a job well done. One of the nicest stops along the path was Home- coming. The students worked hard all Homecoming week to make their class floats the best possible. Homecoming festivities officially started with the Bonfire and Snake Dance on Thursday, October 14. The busy day finally arrived, and the planning of the preceding week began to pay off. A rousing pep assembly, followed by a parade through Homer, boosted every- one’s spirits even more. At 7:45, the Homer Panthers charged on to victory over the Ridge Farm Bulldogs by a score of 20-13. At half-time, the Freshman Class was announced as winners in the float competition. The sophomores were the runners up in the contest. At 10:00 p.m., the dreams of Homecoming became realities. The beautiful decor- ations made it even nicer. Moon River bubbled and sparkled as the Shadows played beautifully in the background. As the evening progressed, the excitement filled the air as everyone waited for the Coronation. Candidates for Homecoming Queen and King were: Ann Trees Bob Frye Connie Wakefield Jeff Bryan Jo Ellen Woodside Rod Doak Cindy Wienke Mike Koe--ner Candy Wienke George Heppe Janice Morrison Steve Doak Elaine Nale Carl Plotner Melissa Wienke Scott Trees The magic hour finally arrived when the clock struck eleven, and Cindy Wienke and ft ke Koerner became our 1965 Homecoming Queen and King. The crowners were Mike Wakefield and Barbara Webb, and the crown bearers were Rosie Gillette and Bobby Clem. Mrs. Kerr, Senior sponsor, was the evening's mistress of cerimonies As all good things must come to a close, the clock struck one and the evening became a memory, and the miles slowly began again. Student Council FHA FFA FSA JETS GAA H-Club Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior SWEETH£flRTl)AJ VC£ Tlie best Sweetheart Dance in a long time—it was a very beautiful evening!!” This was one opinion that summed up a festive dance co-sponsored by the FHA, FFA, and GAA. The musical entertainmentwas provided by the Del Rays who were very popular with the students ana guests. fhe court for the Queen, Melissa Wicnke of the GAA, consisted of Ann Trees, Daisy Buchanan, Barbara Tate, Nancy Davis, Karen Rechkemmer, Rosanne Stauter, and Pam Baird. Rod Kibler, King, had Alan Wienke, Bob Frye, Jeff Bryan, Scott Trees, Dick Moore, Ray Compton, and Lanny Mullis for his attendants. As Mra. Marrs, mistress of ceremonies, announced the royalty, the Del Rays played the theme for the Dance, Love is a Many-Splendored Thing. The gym was gayly decorated in red to accent the Valentine season. A glittering ball hung from the ceiling to give a special effect to the decorations. Everyone vho was fortunate to attend the dance agreed that February 12, 1966, will be a day that will bring back many sweet memories to the Alumni ofHHS. And we have travelled one more mile. The Junior Class (67) was responsible for this wonderful gift to the Seniors. The Prom was a result of several circumstances which most students feared would come about. After the question of class trips was decided, and the Board announced that it was illegal to permit them in association with the school, the Juniors decided to hold a Prom. The date of May 20 was set and everyone bought formal wear for the big occasion. Mr. Mel Root, fox-mer principal, coach, and teacher, spoke to the assembled students and guests. A hatchet oration and a look into the futui'e lives of the Seniors provided many laughs for everyone. The Impalas from Monticello Beach, Indiana, provided swinging entertainment that pleased everyone (even the people over 50!). This whole affair lasted til about 12:30 a.m., but this was certainly not the end of the evening for most of the guests. Most of the students proceeded to the Champaign YMCA for swimming and dancing until 5:30 a.m. From there, the party went to Uncle John's Pancake House for some well seasoned pancakes. Around 7:30 a.m., most people were home or near home. Thus ended one night that will never be forgotten by the Class of 1966. Jerry Krugh passed to Wes King for Homer's only touchdown. Next Friday, the Panthers hosted a fine Catlin Team which was dominated by the Reed twins win their victory over Homer 27-6. Homer's lonely touchdown came in the final quarter on a five yard run around right end by Jerry Krugh. Homer was still looking for its first victory when it traveled to Rossville, but the Bobcats ended the search with an 18-0 win over the Panthers. It was a different story to following day when the Junior Varsity upset a Newman team 24-0, For the first time in many years the Panthers fell to their biggest rival ABL. Martinie proved too much for the Panthers scoring all of ABL's points in their 27-0 rout of Homer. THEN CAME HOMECOMING WITH THE PANTHERS FACING AN EQUALLY WINLESS RIDGEFARM TEAM. JEFF BRYAN SCORED HOMER'S FIRST T.D. ON A FIVE YARD PLUNGE THROUGH THE UNE IN THE SECOND QUARTER. ROGER BOGAN KICKED FOR THE EXTRA POINT. AGAIN IN THE THIRD QUARTER JERRY KRUGH CARRIED AROUND THE END FOR A T.D. AND ROGER ADDED THE EXTRA POINT. JERRY SCORED THE FINAL T. D. IN THE FOURTH QUARTER TO GIVE THE PANTHERS A 20-13 VICTORY FOR THEIR FIRST WIN. Unfortunately, this is where the good ends and the bad begins again. The following Friday Milford bombed the Panthers 20-6 with Jerry Krugh getting the only Homer T.D. on a run around left end. Homer's familiar six points wasn't quite cnought to defeat a determined Jamaica team as the Cardinal poured on thirty-three points to slaughter the Panthers. The only Panther T. D. came on a 20 yard run by Wes King. The season ended with a game no one was looking forward to except St. Joe-Ogden. It was no surprise when the Spartans won 54-0 over the Panthers. This was the final to the 65 football season. SPECIAL MENTION FIRST TEAM-ALL E. C.C. DEFENSIVE-SAFETY SPECIAL MENTION ALL E.C.C. GUARD ALL E.C.C. CENTER SPECIAL MENTION ALL E.C.C. Nevertheless, our Panthers posted a good record, for Homer at least, with six wins to go with fifteen losses. Many of our games were lost and won by narrow margins. Everyone was fairly optimistic after our first vic- tory in the first game of the season over the Villa Grove Blue Devils. It wasn't long though before we started feeling the pangs of defeat-the second game at Ja- maica. The Reed team (Catlin) were our next victorious opponent. Then there was Rossville who just couldn't lose in their new gym. In old gyms-Young Amer- ica's-we put on agood show to beat the Eagles. I'm afraid I'm contradicting my- self when I say that East Lynn beat us in there cracker box, and who will ever for- get that last minute shot from the top of the backboard that led us to victory over Kansas. Remember the Jamaica tournament? We darn near upset the champs- Ridgefarm. Next year we just have to clobber those three little pip-squeak towns down south whose names begin with A,B, andL. Our Panthers posted an impres- sive victory over Fisher just before the county tournament. Our last victory came at the expense of Ridgefarm. The low-lights of the year were the St. Joe and Armstrong games. Both teams were awfully close to a three figure number at the Seriously though, our team was a very young one, mostly sophomores and jun- iors. Bob Frye, the lone senior, will lie the only man not returning next year. In 66 - 67 , we'llallbe looking for a reversal of this year's record. Good Luck Homer High School!!!!!!!!! end of the games. ✓ DAISY BUCHANAN KAREN BREWER CINDY WIENKE MELISSA WIENKE DEBBY DURST MARILYN KOERNER KAREN RECHKEMMER VICKI BRANDON JUDY WOLF Like football and basketball we see a bright future. This year the track team loses only two Seniors, Jeff Bryan and Rod Kibler. Since the loss of Senior is small and like football we have a good young squad to takeover. With nine re- turining lettermen and a good group of boys anchoring. Homer will be a team to rechon with in the forthcoming season. This year we saw only one freshman win a varsity letter. Ralph Whitt was a valuable asset to the team adding depth to the relay team as well as being a fine dash man. accaC wie te @o tune tce tte tt Valedictorian - Scott Trees American Legion Awards Melissa Wienke-Bob Frye Co-Salutatorians Brenda Wolf-Bob Frye RNOTHER CHAPTER Bank Scholarship Bob Frye The fall of 1963 marked a year in the history of Homer High School because the Claris of 1966 made its bebut into the poison ivy hall of Homer High School. Twenty-two greenies, began their unforgettable and unquenchable thirst for liquor, rather ed- ucation They included Don Allen, Pam Baird, Brenda Ball, Jerrie Bear, Judy Bear Jeff Bryan, Roberta Buchanan, Susan Canaday, Rod Doak, Bob Frye, Rodney Kibler, Mike Keorner, Effie Lawrence, Carolyn Mitchell, JimNale, Jean Poole, Ann Trees, Scott Trees, Connie Wakefield, Janice Wakefield, CindyWienke, and Melissa Wienke. After the first year, we had lost one from the charter group of couragouse students. Our sophomore year saw three more students added to our role. They were Betty Kenney, Gaiy Roberson, and Steve Vergara. Our Junior year saw Steve Vergara and Gary Roberson leave, but we gained Joe Henderson and Mary Lou Tiffin. The year when we reached the pinnacle of our success, we lost Mary Lou Tiffin. We gained and lost Bob Joseph, and we also lost Jim Nale, Joe Henderson graduated at Semester break and Janice Wakefield left us to further her education at DJC. We say this was our pinnacle of success because we had a Prom and a Class Trip. Another tidbit of history that must be included is that Ann Trees did not miss one day of school since the sixth grade. The Class of 1966 proceeded to close its high school days with Baccalaureate on May 29. Reverend Paul Holland spoke on the topic, Why Be Honest. His speech made a lasting impression on the class. May 31 was the last day of school for us, and it ended with semesters exams, of all things. The big night was June 2 when we, the Class of 1966, receiv’d our diplomas and our high school years came to and end. Doctor James Hine spoke to us on the topic The Best Years of Your Life. He challenged us to malic each day and each year the best of our life. Though we are no longer an active part of Homer High, the Memories we have and the acts which we did have made us a permanent part of our high school. No one can take from us the four years we were members of Homer High. And so Ilomcr High, we bid our farewell adieu to the warden, guards and fellow in- mates. We served four years, but they certainly weren't long. As a matter of fact, they were awfully short. Good luck, kids! We, the graduating Seniors of 1966, wish you much fun and success in IRIS. TiJciC We, the Class of 66 , do declare this to be our last will and testament hoping that it will be of help to those poor souls we leave behind. Without your pat- ience and understanding, coupled with your willingness to work, there would be no 1966 Homerian. We must be frank with you; this experience has been no picnic, but we feel that the outcome will prove all of our trouble and headaches worthwhile. We now turn the finished product over to you to enjoy for many years to come. Good Luck The Editors, k .V c: 'V 'V- ■■•••'- Sc--’--: - - r ■ -. ■ . - . . ' - i ., •• - v vc, -. •KsBRc V • , ' V '?. .
